Learn Coptic › Read your first words

1-4 What is your name? You meet someone and ask and give names.

By the end: Read four more letters, ask "What is your name?" and answer.

New letters

  • Ϣ ϣ Shai sh as in ship
  • Ϥ ϥ Fai f as in fire
  • Ⲃ ⲃ Vita v as in van and 1 other way: see the letters page
  • Ϩ ϩ Hori h

Learn

ϣ is sh as in ship. ϥ is f, and ϩ is a plain h.

ⲃ is v before a vowel, as in van (so ⲃⲁⲗ is val), and also v before a consonant, as the recordings have it. It is b at the end of a word, when doubled, or in a name.

There are two ways to ask a name, and you will hear both. The Bible says ⲛⲓⲙ, who: ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ is literally "who is your name?" Classes and church books say ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ, "what is your name?" (ⲁϣ means which or what: the Bible has it as a plain what, in ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲃⲉⲭⲉ, what is your reward, Matthew 5:46, and ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲓⲙⲏⲓⲛⲓ, what is the sign, Matthew 24:3; what it does not have is ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ, and the 1948 conversation book already asks a name that way). The word for what in the Bible is ⲟⲩ, as in ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⲫⲁⲓ, what is this? In the grammars ⲛⲓⲙ asks about people, ⲟⲩ about things, and ⲁϣ about either. ⲡⲁ- is my, as ⲡⲉⲕ- is your, so ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲛ is my name and ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ is your name.

Words

  • ou ⲟⲩ what What, in the Bible. A different word from ⲟⲩ, a (Lesson 2-1).
  • ash ⲁϣ which, what Which, what: the old grammars give both (Tattam, Stern, Mallon §102, Crum), and the Bible has ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ + a noun as a plain what is, as in Matthew 5:46 and 24:3. Classes and church books ask a name with it: ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ. The Bible asks a name with ⲛⲓⲙ, and for a bare what is this it prefers ⲟⲩ.
  • paran ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲛ my name
  • pekran ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ your name (to a man)
  • peran ⲡⲉⲣⲁⲛ your name (to a woman) Not heard in a lesson book: it is built the way the grammar says (Mallon §74). Same pattern as ⲡⲉⲓⲱⲧ, your father to a woman, in lesson 2-3.
  • sheeri ϣⲏⲣⲓ son
  • sheri ϣⲉⲣⲓ daughter
  • heet ϩⲏⲧ heart
  • foi ϥⲱⲓ hair
  • val ⲃⲁⲗ eye
  • vaki ⲃⲁⲕⲓ city A feminine word: ϯⲃⲁⲕⲓ, the city (Matthew 21:10); Crum marks it feminine.
  • Petros Ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ Peter (a name)

Say it

  • Nim pe pekran Ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ What is your name? (to a man)
  • Nim pe peran Ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲣⲁⲛ What is your name? (to a woman)
  • Ash pe pekran Ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ What is your name? (to a man)
  • Ash pe peran Ⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲣⲁⲛ What is your name? (to a woman)
  • Paran pe Petros Ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲛ ⲡⲉ Ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ My name is Peter.
