Learn Coptic › Read your first words

1-2 My family You talk about your father, brother and sister.

By the end: Read five more letters and the words for father, brother, sister, I and we.

New letters

  • Ⲟ ⲟ O o as in or and 3 other ways: see the letters page
  • Ⲱ ⲱ Omega o as in hope
  • Ⲧ ⲧ Taf t as in table
  • Ⲥ ⲥ Sima s as in sun
  • Ⲕ ⲕ Kappa k as in king

Learn

ⲟ is a short o, as in or. ⲱ is a longer o, as in hope. ⲧ, ⲥ and ⲕ sound like t, s and k.

Say ⲥⲟⲛ like the English word sawn, not like son. In Coptic it means brother.

ⲁⲛⲟⲕ means I and ⲁⲛⲟⲛ means we. They differ only in the last letter.

ⲓⲱⲧ, father, is said yot: at the start of a word, before a vowel, ⲓ is y, as in yes. In the middle of a word it stays i, as in ⲡⲉⲕⲓⲱⲧ, pekiot, your father. Reading confirmed by the site owner, 7 Oct 2026.
