Big decision !!!

edited December 1969 in Personal Issues
Ok so next year I'm going to university and I was having doubts about what I would study.
The two things I was doubting between were Law and Medicine. I've been thinking about this issue for a year now, and have been praying also for guidance from God, I've also asked many people I respect and the opinions are divided...

Recently I've decided on Law, and have been telling everybody how glad I was that I had finally decided. Yet I don't feel complete peace in my heart, I feel like I'm regretting my choice. Could this lack of peace be a sign from God to tell me He would rather see me doing Medicine, or is it just normal cuz I've made such a huge decision and choosing always means losing something??

I really don't know what to do, it's my future you know...

Anyways please pray for me (I really need guidance)

God Bless

  • Hey godislove, how are you? Good I hope. I think that you being uneasy could very well be a sign from God that this could be the wrong career path for you, you know yourself better than anyone else so nobody can truley tell you what to do. I went through a similar situation as you and the only thing that got me through it was A LOT of prayer. God will show you the right path don't fret, He likes to take His time. Just pray and God will complete the rest have faith in him. Sorry for rambling on, hope this helped a little.

  • godislove260,

Spiritually, have faith and no matter what decision you reach, be happy and say to yourself “I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps. Jeremiah 10:23”

Know yourself: by examining your talents, interests, and your personality traits and see which career will match.

Know what to expect with each career: by examining each path carefully for example know how long it will take to achieve your degree, do you like to stay in school forever, work long hours, being on-call 24/7. Understand the work environment which can vary greatly and I am sure it will have impact in your decision.

Here is my suggestion is to volunteer during the summer at a hospital and test the water and see if you like medical career. Also, volunteer at a lawyer’s office for couple weeks.

Finally, an ingredient to future success is to do what you love not love what you do.
  • Hi :)

Sometimes determining what God's will is can be difficult.

Heg. Fr. Athanasius Iskander discusses decision making in his book "Practical Spirituality".
Check out his chapter on Discernment (page 70)  Check out http://stmaryscopticorthodox.ca/content/books/spirituality.pdf

Make sure you make your confessional father a part of your decision as he will be key to guiding you through the tough times of university.

May God guide us in His perfect path.

    /gr

  • Thank you very much flexmd and george, the link you posted was truly very helpful, thanks so much, may God bless you.

  • Hi Godislove,

There's a prayer in the back of the agpeya (well most of them anyway) that has a really good prayer on making decisions. Its a very good prayer.

Having said that, the same question was asked to ANba Angaelos. He said "why not sit down with yourself and see what you'd like?"

But I know EXACTLy what u mean: u could like both disciplines, and have no idea which is the right one?! That's a fair question. Its so hard isn't it.

Definately ask abouna to pray for u.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks Qt for your encouraging words..

THere's another way that I find very interesting, but I haven't tried it.

Its if you like BOTH subjects equally, and u have NO idea which one to chose. You put the subjects on the alter for abouna to pray on and then he picks one. Now, the one he picks, u are stuck with. I mean, u cannot say "no" afterwards.

I've heard about this way of chosing wifes, jobs or anything.. I've never done it before.

Perhaps someone else can advise, or just ignore my post if i'm talking rubbish. lol

    Thanks
  • Actually I had heard about this before but the thing is, what if God doesn't choose to divinly intervene this way? then I will have based my choice on chance...
I mean it's like forcing God to choose for you this way and no other way, I wouldn't feel comfortable applying this method but I know that it is being applied in our church, so it's probably not rubbish QT, thanks for posting..

THat's a good point. What if u are forcing God to chose for u?

Why not pray that God then reveals to u the outcome of your decision? Let God show you now what u can expect from each discipline.
  • and if you still couldn't decide

Then you can major in both law and med (it is possible) and when you are sudying you will know which subject you like and which that doesn't make you comfortable!

I am studying pre-med and I LOVE IT eventhough it is tough and long bas I LOVE IT! I have the desire to study for that long and I have the desire to FINISH :)

rabana ma3ak/ma3aky and i am sure he will guide you in the right time no need to hurry :)

  • I just want to give you some advice, although you may not like it. Law is a good field to practice in, but it's difficult. You really need to almost enjoy writing essays and stuff because they will require you to write many of them before graduating. After you graduate, you'll still have to write a lot of professional papers and read A LOT. You need to be very logical and your way of thinking needs to be very critical in order to be succesful. Lawyers aren't that much different from each other as far as what they do but in Medicine, you have MANY DIFFERENT choices to choose from. If you like kids, become a pediatrician or OB GYN. If you like socializing with people, be an Internal Medicine or Family Practice. If you like the title of being A Dr. but hate the site of blood, be a radiologist. If you like dealing with dead people or you like challenging surgical cases, be a pathologist. I'm sure you get the point as to what i'm trying to say. Also, it's a lot easier to find a job as a Doctor (any speciality) than to find one as a lawyer. You can find a hospital or clinic anywhere in the world thats willing to accept you, but a law firm....thats very limited. Not any law firm is going to be willing to take you in. Opening up a law firm is very hard to. Also, in the long run, most docs make a lot more than lawyers. Unless you really really enjoy what a lawyer does, I don't think you'll like it.

  • godislove260,

Maybe you can study 'Medical Law' and use your talents. It seems to be a growing field.

Hey bentbabaYasou3 thanks, but you must be living in the US or something, cuz here in Europe, in Belgium it's either med of law you can't do both.
That's one of the big things holding me back from med though it's 13 years !!! (8 + 5 specialisation) which is really long also since I'm a girl who might want to start a family and get married before I turn 30 so that's an important thing to consider

    THanks for your post though
    God Bless
