Are they real?

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
I go to a Catholic school and in religion class, i was told that Adam and Eve were not real. They just said that they are just symbols of the creation story and their existence shouldn't be taken literally. Is this true?? ??? What do you guys think? I'd like to hear your opinions.

  • well of course for us this is wrong. If Adam and Eve were"fake" or just a symbol then wut made Jesus come on earth to save us if the 1st sin of Adam and Eve was just a symbolic story. Also we beleive that all the prophets even us came from Adam and eve. I f they are not real then Moses isn't, neither is Abraham, David etc. and if these are not real then Jesus couldn't have come t this world. In the 1st chapter of Mathew it says that Jesus is the son of Adam.
    I hope this helps
  • I agree with you. When I heard that, I was definately shocked and I refused to believe it. But now I was just pondering about it. Thanks lsalsa. You proved a point. Anymore opinions??
  • This idea is not only illogical, it is biblically inaccurate. Here's why:
    the following is Luke 3:23-38

"23 Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat,[d]the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 25 the son of Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, 27 the son of Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 29 the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, 31 the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God."

Have them try to explain that!! ;D
  • Godly_livin, it sounds like your teacher is in disagreement with official Catholic teaching.

Pope Pius XII, in his Encyclical "Humani Generis", rejected polygenism (the theory that humanity descended from more than one couple) and reaffirmed the Catholic Church's clas sical doctrine of monogenism, that is, the first parents of humanity were a literal Adam and Eve (Please see Humani Generis, Paragraph 37).

Furthermore, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states "The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man. Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents." (CCC, Paragraph 390).

IMO, to dismiss the story of Adam and Eve as fictional or mere symbology is to depart from Christian teaching, be that Catholic or Orthodox.

For an additional scriptural reference that you might find useful, please refer to Romans 5:12-19.
  • off topic :-[ a bit but there are other things they say like.......
one time in religion class(i am in catholic school as well)
they brought up a miniscule detail not something major. they said that the earth was impossible to be created in only seven days but my argument is it says in the bible "for nothing is imposible with god"(luke:1:37)but the exception of this is "one day to God is a thousand to us" but i don't excactly dwell on this because what the bible said is true :)
  • [coptic][/coptic]
    thats not true
    adam and eve r real
  • we all know that the story of adam and eve is true..we don't need to argue about that. If you check out genesis 1:7 it says "And the LORD god formed man"..what else do they want to prove that adam and eve are real other than the bible?

  • :) God bless you Sandra

If Adam and Eve were just symbols, then we may become just symbols too! At least there had to be a first couple, one man and one woman, somehow, to start or form the one very first family, but they question the Lord's words here: it is their words against His.

In Genesis, God informs us that the first man He created was called Adam and the first woman was called Eve. No humans were created before then, and God being there so kindly gives us these details. Thank You Lord.

The fact is God Himself named Adam (for your contemplation).
  • I know im going a bit off topic, but does that mean the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve had to marry each other. (Once again sorry for going off topic).
  • ya they did!
  • no they are reel. never only believe ur parents, copts, church and god.
