  • Ok... here goes...

Gamblin is like throwin dice and flippin cards and what not. I see kids gamble every day and ill admit... ive done it a few times. But stock market is different. People make a livin usin the stock market. Whether they invest and make loads of money or if their job is a stock broker. I honestly think that stock market is a form of gambling but not wrong. ya i no thats like an oxymoron but i think it is. its a very formal field... i mean u dont see bums walkin around wallstreet buyin and selling. Also, the stock market is sometimes predictable so u no wen to buy wen to sell and u have people who actually went to college to do this. do u have college to learn how to do card tricks or roll dice? i hafta say tho... stock market is gambling but not the wrong kind if its done properly. ill see if i think of anything after and ill post it. ;)
  • As I know...both gambling and the stock market are wrong...gambling u are just putting money to see if u loose or win...and stock market is the same idea..u are just putting money in to see if u loose or win...so what's the point..why don't u just invest ur money in something that u are more confident that it will bring u money...
As my FOC use to say...why don't u just have a stock market on heaven than on earth...what he means is...why don't u put all ur effort in church and give ur money to church than just throw it somewhere here and there...ur reward in heaven will be more and more than gambling or putting ur money in the stock market...so as I understand..both gambling and stock market as wrong...
  • what do you mean by the stock market? do you mean the one with the (net, the closing price, etc)

because i am talking it at finance park!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    never mind pray fot me!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I agree with Marianne. Both Gambling and Stock Market are both forms of gambling, but on different levels, so I think they are both wrong too. Its not whether or not the people within these 'games' are rich or poor, because in the end, they are all doing the same thing.
  • You know I agree....because I play in the stock market but when I tell people don't gamble in the casinos its wrong they throw it in my face that I play in the stock market and say thats the same thing just a different atmosphere..and i dont know how to respond...So being that I dont know how to respond kinda makes me feel that its wrong...
  • I don't see anything wrong with investing in the stock market, its like buying property and selling it ...its just trade and sell... but there is risk, a higher risk then property...so who ever does trade should be wise as not to trade more then he/she has and not to put their whole lively hood into it.

    Shenouda.
  • i believe da stock market is da same as gambling - cus u are still playin wif ur money, you could win and u could also lose
    -das jus my opinion

    please pray 4 me guys

  • the difference between gambling and the stock market is that there is some element of predictability within the stock market (like for example, not as many people will buy Delta Airlines tickets during the month of February as during the month of June, etc.)....whereas there is no element of predictability in things like blackjack or poker (oh, wait....maybe there is a little bit......forget everything i said)
  • i think that u have to look at y gambling in wrong. ONE of these reasons is that it is wrong to get money or items that u have not earned. So with gambling u r not earning the money.
This is the same for trying to win those raffle cars and so on. However, for the stock market, i dont know whether your actually earning money fairly...thats very debateable cos you can do uni courses and work really hard etc...
Regarding risk of the stock market- ofcourse theres risk in losing, this is a danger for all businesses. However, if u calculate things, do things safely and dont try and over-do-it, like Nahda sed before, it could be considered ok i guess.
    Very debateable though

    God bless u guys

    Pete
  • I have to agree with Nahda and Shnoods. Gambling is WRONG!!! you are taking your money and wasting it (if you loose) or earning more based soley on something out of your control (the roll of the dice, the next card to show up, etc...)
The stock market on the other hand is different. you are buying a share (or a part) of the company you own it and you earn money based on your investment (called dividents) or you can sell it. Its like buying a house (as someone said before) The value of the house may increase later or decrease. It is in your control to decide which house (or stock) to buy based on expectations and forcasts of market trends.
If you look at it that it is money that you did not earn, then don't take intrest from a bank cuz its money you did not earn (also goes of CDs, Bonds, etc...)
Also from the other point of view, a casino is out to get your money, plain and simple. Corporations that are publicly traded get the money from you to increase thier cash flow or increase thier assets. So they are taking your money and doing something productive with it.
it is a Risk like gambling but like buying a house is a risk, you may loose or win.
    Just my 2 cents.

I agree with you 100%. When you invest in the stock market you're purchasing shares in a company and becoming part owner of that business. Many of these companies could not exist without the capital raised by small-time investors. It's really not that much different from starting and owning your own store.Sometimes your products sell, sometimes they dont.Sometimes you make money, sometimes you lose.Risk is definetly involved, but then again all of life contains an element of risk. But as christians we know that no matter what life throws our way we have a God that stands with us,comforts us,and brings us through the storms of life.

I believe that if we ever do invest in a company on the stock market we should first pray and ask Gods guidance and blessing. Many problems could be easily avoided if we would just seek Gods will in every situation life presents. :)
  • ok,

now see here all u folks, this is what i think

now i dont care what difference there is, ur still putting money on chance, ur still allowing another "source" to determine what ur money may befall.

ur work and ur money, like everything else should be gods. god should determine what ur budget is. i personaly think that just as the church doesnt allow gambling or lotto money, it shouldnt except stock market money either.

thats not right that someone can get rich over night. not cool. money destroys people. plus the people that do work in the stock market are always obsessed with working. u should pray if u need money and god will help u out, dont pray that the stock market will go up.
  • I agree awad I have seen the stock market destroy peoples life before just as gambeling...
  • You're not supposed to be addicted to ANYTHING worldly at all. That does not mean its wrong. Just like you can't be addicted to ice cream for your entire life. The stock market makes our economy go and thats a huge factor of our life. I doubt the church could even get a lot of the stuff it needs if it weren't for the stock market. Of course you should give money to church but there's nothing wrong with trying to invest either.
  • im gonna say this again... do u go to college for years to learn how to be a black jack dealer? u go to scool to become a professional and the stock market isnt somethin u find people doin in alleys and behind buildings and stuff. i dont think its rong and anba david i believe anserd a quick ? that someone asked. He says it isnt really rong but DID NOT ELABORATE so i do not no if htere are any bouandaries or rules or anything.
  • i also want to add that there is always funny business going on with the companies. martha steward is just a drop in the bucket. so many people are gipped out of their life's savings almost daily.

ok, in gambling, dont you have this impulse. that wanting/urge to make lots of mullah? well thats exactly what the stock market does. if i was working in the sm, i would be checking up on the thing non stop.

lastly, people have been known to go into serious depression when they loose large sums of money, its not cool.
  • Stock Market has an element of Risk, so as christians we need to be wise to descern, not to go in 'gambling' with money...having said that, whats the difference between the stock market and anyother investment that you make??..

As with all things we need to be wise, because "all things are lawful for me but not all things are helpful."(St Paul)

I beleive some churches make investments in houses etc?...whats wrong with this??

Awad, thats VERY much generalising...NOT all stock dealers are obsessed with money...there are people (such as myself) who have money as investments (small investments) and just wait for it to mature...if it happends that your money grows exponentially...then God gave you a blessing and you should use this money to glorify his name (as a christian).

Money IS the root of all if not alot of the evil in this world, we as christians shouldnt be "absorbed" or Obsessed by it, but it can be a tool in our daily lives, or as a blessing from God, and be used to glorify him.

Money isn't bad, and its not wrong to have money or to be rich...as long as you know where your treasure is??..."where your treasure is your heart will be there also"..

    Pray for me
    Shenouda.
  • Shenouda, words of wisedom my friend.
Awad, Money is the root of all evil. Even our Lord Jesus Christ said "And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Matt 19:24)
So any attachment to money is wrong. But investment is not. You start your own company, that's an investment. You open your own store, that's an investment. You work for a company, that's an investment. You are investing your time, talent and knowledge and you are getting compensated for that. Same with the stock market. You are investing your money, time, talent and knowledge and you are getting compensated for that. It may be a little disproportionate (the return on investment) but none the less the concept is the same.
  • GAMBELING IS BADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD...hehehe
  • i agree completely guys, i was only referring to people who's job is the stock market. investment is one thing, but putting your life on a balance beam, thats different.

but i guess you can be strong enough to have a job and not fall into sin, however i personaly would stay clear. why put urself in such a position? dealing with worldly riches? porkey?cur? what is the need! be a nurse, help ppl.

grr, well we all know gambling is wrong, aint no atlantic city in my future!
