Addiction

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
I have already asked Coptic Soldier but i was also hoping to ask everyone else. i was wondering if anyone had an explanation as to why people are addicted to pornography, drugs, sleeping, food, sexual activity, dating and other addictions.
I was hoping to get bible verses as well as any online articles, or any recommended books.

Thanks every1 GOD BLESS,

  • ServingChrist, my best answer to your question is that people who are addicts have nothing better to do. They don’t have any priorities in their life i.e. education, family time, GOD…   They waste too much time doing nothing, so they fill that period of time with addictive behaviour…
Their major problem is that they’ve practically filtered out everything ‘constructive’ in their lives and only rely on their feeling of pleasure on this earthly bliss to help them feel ‘complete’. Complete in a sense that they feel they’ve accomplished everything there is to be accomplished on this earth- living life to the fullest and appreciating as much freedom as they can get…sad… but true.
In fact, I think these behaviors are instilled unto ppl’s lives because ppl are willing to listen and see to what the world has to offer. The world says ‘its okay to make the same mistakes over and over…you have a long life ahead of you’; the world says ‘its okay to enjoy alcohol…as long as you don’t drive after drinking too much’; the world says ‘its okay to have sex, as long as you use protection’; the world says ‘its okay to stare at naked pics…as long as the pic that you’re staring at was taken with that person’s consent’; the world says ‘its okay to be a part of a religion, but don’t worry…all you need to do is show up to service a few times/year’….Basically, our world says ‘everything is harmonious…everything is just dandy, nothing bad could ever happen.’ WRONG.
So really, I think it’s the generation we live in that’s causing addiction to become a leading sin. The generation we live in AND people’s unwillingness to prioritize God in their lives. TWO MAJOR FACTORS. That’s just what I think. I hope I helped.

Oh and here are a few verses to help you:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:32)

“I have come that they may have life, life in all its fullness” (John 10:10)

“How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:9-11)

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1Corinthians 10:13)

ALSO, I FOUND A DOCUMENT ON THE NET, ITS REALLY GOOD: http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:DwHJuVnTTHsJ:www.biblecenter.com/smallgroupbiblestudies/Overcoming%2520Addictions.doc+verses+on+addiction&hl=en
  • thanks that helped alot. I was wondering if i could use that WORLD thing that u talked about in my project.
    Thanks again,
  • no prob ;)
  • Youstina S you are just right that’s the world it’s give us a sin to take our life
and give us a temprary happeness to avoid us from the permenant heven's life..
    God bless us
  • how about with dating, and sexual relationships? how are people addicted to that.same deal bible verse and any good stuff!! :D
  • The way I look at addiction, is not that of people having no focus in life (however I really did enjoy Youstina S.'s commentary), but rather, they have an emptiness in their life which they try to fill up with nonsense that vary from altering their state of mind in order to distract themselves...to other ridiculous and tragic addicitons that merely satisfy the most human as well as sinful "cravings" such as porn, gluttony, empty relationships, which do nothing but damage...the list goes on and on.

    Just my take on addiction!
    pray 4 me
  • but do u know wat, people that are addicted are not even aware of what there doin. they dont see that its wrong - thats where we come in. god gave us the gift of christian preaching, so all i can say is use it 2 ur ability
  • being unfulfilled causes people to seek things they think can satisfy them. Obviously this doesn't work, so they add to it untill it becomes addicting (whether physically or mentally). The problem is that the more u try and fill urself with these things, the more miserable and empty u become and the circle goes on and on.

Sorry if i repeated anyone's words, i was too lazy to read all the posts :)
  • So then, how would u inform people of their problem with addiction?
Who would u tell them how to get out of it, without condemning them?
How can u kinda of make them leave thinking, HEY MAYBE IM miSSING SOMETHING!?

Since this is for a disscussion, i was hoping to get into the disscussion by opening it up somehow, somehow though to keep everyone interested. Also in the middle i want to bring up the topic of the true physician, and lead everyone to walk out thinking, maybe theres a point here. I am sure there are addicts in my class, I want to get their input as well as reach out to them.

The hard thing i thnk is the getting them into it. Im sure if i start off by saying, ya addicts are hooked and cant get out, they wont appreciate it much and would most likely not listen to what im trying to get at.
  • hey,

'ServingChrist'......actions speak louder than words. People tend to remember what they see, and ignore most of what they hear. We now live in a time where people are sick of hearing words, they want to see others living what they speak. The only way to change a person is to befriend them, and be an example without preaching. And when they see the joy and love that you have in your everyday life because you are one with Christ......they'll most likely ask you questions like why are you so happy....or why do you go to church? And so on. You then tell them about church and God....etc......BUT THEY MUST OPEN UP TO YOU FIRST.......

Just try changing others by being an example and God will enlighten your path and you'll be surprised at the results.

    God Bless.....

  • see i understand that, but when im presenting infront of a class, it would be hard "to live out" since all i CAN do is say.

I want to keep these people able to approach me, and even if not, i want them to be able to come out with something for their daily lives?!
  • have u tried adressin this issue wif ur confession father??
  • I belive its a constant effort......you should try befriending your classmates first ( if you havent already).....but it is almost impossible now a days....because when people here someone trying to preach they just stop listening. You should try establishing the proof of a creator first, and that the creator of all is Christ Jesus, because most people are lost on that subject. But really its extremely difficult now a days to speak and think that everyone around you will change. Speaking is nice, but speaking and doing show you truly believe in what you speak.

    God bless
  • how about preaching for the topic of addiction, establishing that god is the creator, i dont think would really help, i want them to hear me, not think i talked about nothing to do with addiction, just a sermon.
  • thats a really good idea ;D
