Not allowed to go to Jerusalem?

Why did HH Pope Shenouda forbid us going to Jerusalem? And if there is a rule against going there, why do we have a Bishop in Jerusalem (HE Metropolitan Abraham)?

    1. How will they be influenced by the Israeli media?
    2. What is wrong with stimulating Israel's economy?
    3. So why do we have a Metropolitan there?

Excellent question.. i asked this also to my old FoC.
He said the Pope had to do this for some political reason. But your question is very good my friend.
  • I heard it has a lot to do with the church's relations with the muslim community in egypt, and making sure coptic people are safe by not "being involved".  However, we do have churches there.  I have been there myself.  We even have a monastery in the old city in Jerusalem.  I'm not sure how serious this "decree" is, however, I don't necessarily agree with it (which is why I went).  You should probably check with your father of confession and see what he says

Can you elaborate please on this political reason?

the decree is "serious." people who do break it, they have sinned and they have to confess that sin. many are banned from having communion for a period of time.

To put it in simple words: the area is not at peace, politically and in other ways. relations with Israel can become very cruel in their dealings with people and the area, mostly arabs. Also clashes amongst them rise every once in a while. Tourism there supports and encourages their actions. The Pope, as the leader of our Church on earth, banned all Coptic Orthodox Christians from visiting for religious reasons.

The Muslims in Egypt might not like us being good friends with Israeli's and the Israeli government. I think this is the political reason, I don't know for sure though.

Our Pope Anba Shenouda III is in a very tough position in Egypt. Many lives are at stake.

I agree with you on mainly except that the Pope banned all Coptic Christians that are LIVING in Egypt to visit.

That means, you can go as an Australian/American/Jamaican etc. tourist with your non-Egyptian Passport...

Here is a thread from coptichymns.net that discusses this issue too if any are interested.

I also know many many people from Sydney who went as Australian tourists.. many of them very respectful people at church who would never go against the Popes words if it were true that Aussies can't go.

    Cheers
