  • my understand is this..feel free to correct me:
Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit..."

the soul is our instinct, drives, emotions/feelings.

The spirit is the relationship between us and God……..this is what differentiates us from animals because they have souls but no spirit

  • So, when we die is it our soul or spirit that goes to heaven or hell??

    This is an interesting question.

I have always thought of the soul as the component in us that animates us, it gives us life.  All living beings possess a soul because all living beings are, by virtue of being a living creature, alive.  The spirit, on the other hand, is the immortal component that is unique only to man.  It was given to man by God, and it is the part of us that longs to return to God.  Thus it is the spirit that goes to Paradise or Hades and will be reunited to the body after the Day of Judgment to live eternally in Heaven or Hell.
