Learn
Here each word comes with its the. Several take the short, jenkom form of the (ⲡ̀, ⲧ̀, ⲫ̀): ⲫ̀ⲃⲁⲗ is the eye, ⲧ̀ϫⲓϫ is the hand. Learn the whole word together with its the. These short forms are the weak the: it is used mostly for something general or one of a kind (ⲫ̀ⲛⲟⲩϯ, God; ⲧ̀ⲫⲉ, the sky), while ⲡⲓ and ϯ usually point to one particular thing; the two often overlap, and some words are written both ways (ⲡⲓⲕⲁϩⲓ and ⲡ̀ⲕⲁϩⲓ). The weak the is ⲫ̀ or ⲑ̀ before ⲃ ⲗ ⲙ ⲛ ⲣ (ⲫ̀ⲃⲁⲗ, ⲫ̀ⲗⲁⲥ, ⲑ̀ⲙⲁⲩ), usually before ⲓ (ⲫ̀ⲓⲱⲧ, the father), and sometimes before ⲟⲩ (ⲫ̀ⲟⲩⲱⲓⲛⲓ, the light, but ⲡ̀ⲟⲩⲣⲟ, the king). Before every other letter it is ⲡ̀ or ⲧ̀ (ⲡ̀ϩⲏⲧ, ⲧ̀ϫⲓϫ, ⲡ̀ⲱⲛϧ, life).
To say his eyes or her hands (several things), the pieces are different from the singular ones: ⲛⲁ- is my, ⲛⲉⲕ- is your (to a man), ⲛⲉ- is your (to a woman), ⲛⲉϥ- is his, ⲛⲉⲥ- is her, ⲛⲉⲛ- is our, ⲛⲉⲧⲉⲛ- is your (to several people) and ⲛⲟⲩ- is their. So ⲛⲉϥⲃⲁⲗ is his eyes. Careful: ⲛⲉⲛ- here is our (ⲛⲉⲛϫⲓϫ, our hands); in lesson 2-4 the same spelling ⲛⲉⲛ- was the plural of (ⲛⲉⲛϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲙ̀Ⲫ̀ⲛⲟⲩϯ, the sons of God). They are two different uses of the same spelling.
