The ordinations of deacons are performed after the Prayer of Reconciliation and before the deacon’s response of “Greet one another....” The Bishop begins all the prayers for all ranks with the following inaudible prayer:

When a person is chosen to be a deacon by the priest(s) and he is found worthy for this service, he (they) present him to the Bishop and witness to him. The candidate kneels before the altar and the Bishop without wearing the vestments. The Bishop begins to raise the incense and prays the Prayer of Thanksgiving and the verses of the cymbals in the day’s rite may be chanted. Then he prays the following prayer facing the East.

إذا اختير الذي يقدم شماساً من الكهنة أنه مستحق لهذه الخدمة، يقدمونه للأسقف ويشهدون له. ويقام بغير تونية أمام المذبح مقابل الأسقف ويحني ركبته اليمين على درج المذبح. يرفع الأسقف البخور ويقول صلاة الشكر وصلاة البخور ويمكن أن تقال أرباع الناقوس المناسبة لطقس اليوم. ثم يصلي الأسقف الصلاة الأتية ووجهه للشرق:

A Sermon for the Deacon

موعظة للشماس

The work of ministry with which you have been entrusted, O my son, [is great]. It is necessary for you, therefore, to fulfill those things which have been assigned you to do, since you have been enrolled as a son of Stephen, the first deacon: to visit the people of the Lord, the widows, the orphans and the afflicted. You shall help those whom you are able to help and supply their needs, being an example for them so that they may see your good works and emulate them from your behavior; following the bishop and the presbyter, informing them about the afflicted, so that he might visit them according to the canonical rules; honoring those higher than you in dignity—the presbyters, since they are as a father to you—so that you too may be worthy of the blessing from Him who says, “Whoever will serve Me, My Father will honor.”

هذا عمل خدمة قد ائتمنت عليه يا بني. يجب عليك أن تكمل ما قد رُسِمَ لك. وتصنعه إذ أنت معدود من أولاد إستفانوس أول الشمامسة، تفتقد شعب الرب: الأرامل والأيتام المتضايقين وتعين مَنْ تقدر تعينه وتسد فاقتهم وتكون لهم مثالاً لكي ينظروا أعمالك الحسنة ويحسدوا طريقتك. وتكون تابعاً للأسقف والقسيس وتعرفهم بالمتضايقين ليفتقدوهم كالحد القانوني وتكرم الذين هم أعلى منك في الرتبة الذين هم القسوس. ويكونوا كالأباء لتستحق أنت الطوبى القائل "أن الذي يخدمني يكرمه أبي."

As Saint Paul the apostle says, “For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 3:13).

وكما يقول أيضاً الرسول الطاهر بولس "أن الذين يخدمون جيداً درجة صالحة تصنع لهم دالة عظيمة في الإيمان بالمسيح يسوع ربنا" (1 تيموثاوُسَ 3 : 13).

Know, therefore, the measure of the honor which has been given to you and bear it, which is the true Blood given for the salvation of the world and given into your hands for the glory of our God, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
