My never ending social problems

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
I have a problem, which is that I am extremely afraid of approaching people. I feel like everyone rejects me because I do not know how to speak to them
But I am going to see a counselor and try to fix that

  • You would think Baba Shenouda shoulda had social problems since he was raised by his older brother, never had friends, never played in his life, didn't have a steady education, always moved from place to place, never wanted to be around people, didn't really talk, and was always alone. But counseling didn't make him our Pope.

Of course we can't really compare ourselves to a giant, but there seems to be a trend with taking refuge in God vs man.

Counseling seems to work for some people, but I personally think it belittles God.  :-\

PS: sometimes we assume people perceive us a certain way because of something that is sooo big in our eyes, but most of the time, others don't even notice. I know this is a silly example, but a few days ago I had a pimple, and I thought EVERYONE was staring at it and noticing how huge it was. Turns out no one even saw it, and I was too self-absorbed in my self-conscious world :P So unless you start a conversation with someone and they directly reject you, you can safely assume that you're only person who thinks you can't speak to people and that you have social problems.

wow, i never knew that about our Pope. do you know where i can find his personal biography? and by that i mean, a biography where facts like that are given...instead of the generic facts lke where he was born, when he became a monk, etc.
  • i agree that too much counseling is not good.
but sometimes people can have a specific problem, like autism or asperger's syndrome or schizophrenia that gives them problems socialising.
so i think if someone has problems socialising he /she should see his/ her doctor as well as the priest.

i had some amateur 'counseling' as a teenager. it did not help. later on i had a very good relationship with an older lady from my church who loved me a lot. she also loved everyone else and showed me how to live by her kind and humble behaviour.
spending 15 minutes with her is better than many months of counseling.
    :)
i pray God will also lead u to people like that in the church who show u His character and His love.
  • ForeverYours,

I can't find it on YouTube (although I'm sure it's there). I got my information off a CTV program. I'll keep looking.
  • I am sorry to hear that. Try to relax yourself and talk to people as much as possible, I am sure you will feel better.
  • In my opinion, I don't think counselling helps.
For some reason it encourages people to self pity, even if they are not self centered.

Also the strategy for general counselling (outside church) treats you as a very strange human being (don't know how to explain it), very systematic, sometimes patronisng.

I am not negating the benefits of counselling, it is very useful to people around me in society who I see as very lost, they have no family connections, no faith and their lives are pretty complicated.

But for a social communications kind of problem, I have yet to find anything which helps. I do have a related problem but slightly different. If you can change your environment and have courage to talk to people that would solve the problem. Advice and counselling won't help because it is theoretical.

Are there people around you that you wish you could talk to freely? or is there a problem with lack of a social circle as well?

Sorry, don't mean to put you off counselling, you should try for yourself.
