9 day prayer?

Hello all,

I was talking with some friends who were telling me about someone who was having an incredibly bad string of bad luck financially and family wise. They mentioned that this persons mother is doing a 9 day prayer (or something to that effect) for them. What exactly is this? Is this something the church teaches? Please offer any thoughts!

Thank you and God bless you all!

  • Its a Roman Catholic practice called a Novena.

In the Catholic Church, a novena is a devotion consisting of a prayer repeated nine times on a single day, or (more typically) said on nine successive days, asking to obtain special graces. These may consist of small prayer books, recitation of the Rosary, or small prayers through the day.

  • Thank you for your reply Father Peter... so is this practiced in our Coptic faith as well?
  • No, its a relatively modern western custom.
