The Bible

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
I was just reading the bible and at Luke 12: 10 it says And anyone who speaks a word against the son of man it will be forgiven him but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven. first of all what does blasphemes mean?
second: isnt the son of man the same as the Holy Spirit so even if you say something against Jesus your saying it against the Holy Spirit?

  • Main Entry: blas·pheme
Etymology: Middle English blasfemen, from Late Latin blasphemare -- more at BLAME
    transitive senses
1 : to speak of or address with irreverence
    (From www.m-w.com)

Blaspheming against the Holy spirit is meant to deny the work of the Holy Spirit in your ‎life. The Holy Spirit should give you guidance and steers you towards repentance. When ‎you insist on committing the sin, regardless of the warning of the Holy Spirit, then you ‎are blaspheming.‎
  • so if you commit a sin voluntarily, you cant confess?
  • If you confess, then that is an attempt to repent, then you are not blaspheming. It is like you commit a sin, but refuse to confess about it. You know it is wrong, you keep doing it and you do not want to confess or even attempt to stop.
Obviously if you are making honest attempts to repent and confess, then you are not denying the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
