I was at work, working late actually, when a colleague of mine asked me if he could play some music.

I said "sure.. go ahead".

Anyway, he started to play gregorian chants.. lol. I thought it was cute because he's a bit of a party boy. But I told him that the Coptic Church's hymns are really quite funky and he should listen to some. He asked me to play some. But I want him to hear the BEST hymn we have:

Best in terms of :

* Recording quality
* music/melody
* preferably with instruments

What hymn would you choose?

Do we have anything like that??

What hymn would you choose to show off the beautiful hymns we have in our Church. Of course they are all nice, but - he's going to be more interested in the melody, not the meaning. I doubt he's going to stand up and pray to it, he just finds religious music relaxing.

I listened to a few hymns from this site, and the recording isn't that good.

I read it in a book that in 1968 HH Pope Shenouda (Bishop Shenouda at this time) heared Cantor Ibrahim chanting Eptchoice Efnooty (The Annual Asbasmos Watos) & he was extremely impressed with his talent & great voice. Any other information available?

For years I have been trying to acquire a complete collection of the recordings of the late Muallem Fahim Girgis, who used to serve in St Mark's Cathedral, Azbakeya, Cairo. I find his recordings are very comprehensive.

This is what I currently have:
-Vespers, Matins & St Basil's Liturgy: 11 cassette tapes
-St Gregory Liturgy: 3 cassette tapes
-Tasbeha: 32 cassette tapes
-Church "occasions" (Nairooz, St John the Baptist, Feast of Cross, St Mark, etc) - 7 cassette tapes (INCOMPLETE COLLECTION).

It is that last category that I wish to complete. I have only 7 tapes. The 7th tape is for "Nativity, Circumcision and Epiphany." There are obviously more tapes because it seems that he had recorded the hymns in order from the start of the Coptic year (Nairooz) onwards.

Does anyone know where or how I can get them?

I know this is technically a song not a hymm, but I was wondering if anyone knows where I can download the song "A god Like You". Sometimes it is also called "No Eye Has Seen".

I found one version on Orthadox Songs.com, but the words were quite different to what I'm used to so I was wondering if you know of another version?

I have a cassette of an Ethiopian mass (oda 7abashey) recorded by abouna estafanous rizk (القمص أسطفانوس رزق), but my car doesn't take cassettes any more :(

So I was wondering if anyone had an MP3, or other digital form of this amazing liturgy!?

Or any liturgy by abouna estefanous (he sounds soo... heavenly!!)

AND

does anyone know if the pope allows priests to pray this liturgy, as far as i know abouna estefanous is the only Coptic priest to ever record it.

I just remembered something that would bring a tear to your eye.

I was listening to a few hymns on YouTube.. someone kindly uploaded the tasbeha in English and put nice background images on it. It was very nice indeed.

Before changing the hymn, I had a brief look at the comments. This particular hymn (i think it was Arepsalin - O Sing Unto Him Who Was Cruficied For Us..) was quite nice.

MANY people were asking for the lyrics and they wanted to know where/how they could get the words to it.

It had something like 10,000 + views.

That's great. So that corrupts the whole meaning of the hymn, which basically is "as it was" is verbally and musically the same as "so it shall be" that is verbally and musically the same as "from generation to generation"...

Note that the two segments match musically, and if you count the vowels/syllables in each, they are basically the same. However when you sing it in Arabic (or English (in some churches) unfortunately):
الشاروبيم يسجدون لك، والسيرافيم يمجدونك
you will notice that there is a slight raising of the tune at the end of the aforementioned segments, and that is because the number of vowels/syllables differ. This then corrupts the meaning conveying a false sense of stressing out on how the seraphim praise the Lord.
2. notice the very same tune for [coptic]agioc agioc agioc[/coptic] which conveys the meaning of Three Persons in One (of Co-essential energies) (ref: Bshp Raphael).
That is completely distorted in Arabic and English (although I heard that in some place in England they sing it to the Coptic tune keeping the very same tune for the three "Holy").

Please note that according to the proper recording of HICS (and not the new teachings that seem to be flawed not least because cantor Wagdi Bishara taught me so), you will find that every second verse the tune goes up relative to the first verse. On top of that, every verse is actually divided up into two segments. This is not the case with Arabic, or English, where the two segments were lost, and obviously the escalation of the tune every second verse too.
I guess, which is something I came to learn only yesterday when I reflected on the psalm, every two verses in the hymn constitute one Biblical verse. So the Copts were able to undulate the tune to make it easy for people to learn it (the common, the ignorant, the illiterate, etc), so that they know what the verses are according to the Holy Bible... very sweet, that is, and to the core of the edificational role of our Church, don't you agree?

I have been meaning to start a new topic for a while now, but I was too busy with work and on top of that, studying as well. As I am relatively free nowadays (maybe for three weeks or something) I thought I would start a string of threads to point out my dislike to the Arabic hymns, and thereto the consequently translated English hymns, or whatever other language. Of course if there is one language where the congregation takes care to translate the hymns directly from Coptic (keeping the musical tones and the overall structure of the tune) then that is exempt from my attack. The problem is, however, that Coptic language has many more vowels/syllables than do Arabic or English (the two languages I heard hymns sung in), and that corrupts the meanings of hymns. Needless is it to say that the melismata and the single notes in the music do contribute enormously (and that is not an exaggeration) to the words. I will be using some signs from the unicode character and symbol system used in MSWord, and I am hoping no one will have difficulties viewing. At the end, I should say that I have never studied music, except for two months when I was taught to play the "banjo" (probably; in Arabic we used to say "mandolin").
