Ok people. Please read this carefully.

In San Diego, the court made a ruling to remove A cross, not crosses. It is a war monument and the government has every right to remove it if they want.

THEY ARE NOT REMOVING CHURCH CROSSES. My dad is calling people and telling people that and it is not true and they are talking about this on TV and saying everything wrong and I am getting texts saying the same thing and on Facebook, people are posting the wrong this.

Please, read carefully and listen to the whole news report instead of processing the first words you hear. If you are interested in reading the article: http://sandiegonewsroom.com/news/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=43095:kendra-hartmann-writing-for-sdnewscom&catid=186:la-jolla&Itemid=205

Also, call 619-293-2506 and press 2.
Another attack occurred on a train in Samalout, a city within EL Minia in Egypt where a policemen opened fire at a Copt killing him and injuring another 5 all of whom were Copts. Authorities said he is mentally unstable under the care of an Egyptian psychiatrist, and that he opened fire aimlessly. Trust me I'm not making things up. I hope I can hear masr's opinions if his account hasn't been deactivated...
Oujai

In his book The Nature of Christ http://www.copticchurch.net/topics/theology/nature_of_christ.pdf H.H. Pope Shenouda III states

As we say in the Syrian Fraction, concerning the death of Christ "The soul left the body
but His Divinity never departed neither from His Soul nor from His Body. His Soul
likewise, whilst united with His Godhead, descended into hell to preach those who died
in the faith and to open to them the gates of Paradise and let them enter. Yet His Body,
also united with His Godhead, remained in the grave. "

1) What is meant by the Syrian Fraction? Is this the Syrian Orthodox Fraction? Or the Coptic Orthodox Syrian Fraction? Or something else?

2) How many Fractions are there in the Coptic Orthodox Church? Also, can you name some?

3) What is meant by Fraction?

4) I also found The Syrian Fraction under Liturgy here http://tasbeha.org/hymn_library/view/794 where I found

Thus truly the Logos of God suffered in the flesh and was sacrificed and broken on the Cross. His soul parted from His body,

while His divinity in no way parted either from His soul or from His body.

He was pierced in His side with a spear; blood and water flowed from Him for the forgiveness of the whole world. His body was smeared in them, and His soul came and was reunited with His body.

Which is close to what H.H. wrote in wording but not exactly. I couldn't seem to find the exact wording that is in H.H.'s book. Does anyone know why?

5) Regarding the quote from The Syrian Fraction under Liturgy here http://tasbeha.org/hymn_library/view/794 quoted above, does anyone know what is meant by "His body was smeared in them"? I don't understand what is meant by "in them"?

6) Do Coptic Orthodox churches, in general, use only Coptic Orthodox Liturgies or do they sometimes use other Liturgies, like Syrian Orthodox Liturgies or Armenian Orthodox Liturgies or other Oriental Orthodox Liturgies? If they sometimes use other ones, which other ones do they sometimes use? Only Oriental Orthodox ones?

Please excuse my ignorance.

How can we stop Terrorist Attacks against Copts?

Hi,

I'd like to create a thread dedicated to terrorist attacks against Coptic Christians. Obviously, those trying to kill us are not Evangelical Christians, nor Tax collectors, nor Arsenal football supporters. They are muslims.

How or what can we do to make them happy? What exactly do they want from us? What have we done wrong to offend them?

What has a little girl , like Clara who was maimed and injured in the attacks, who has nothing to do with anything, got to do with this Islam's cause?

I think the west are starting to see what Islam is about. When Copts are attacked, no one can say that we are attacked because we are in Afghanistan, and Iraq. What have we done?

We are FOR the Palestianians and have stood by them.

We fought with the muslims against Israel.

Despite how much we've been sincere Egyptians to our country, we have always been treated like slaves by our muslim superiors in Egypt.

It seems the only reason for these attacks is pure hatred, embedded in the Quran, against non muslims.

I doubt that there will be any one rushing to convert to Islam, so, let's say that we all remain Christian: that obviously means we are going to keep on being attacked.. whether or not the government respects our citizenship or not. That won't cut it.

So, I disagree a bit with H.G Anba Angaelos: He thinks the answer is to give Copts equal rights in Egypt. What does that achieve? Are the terrorist attacks happening to us because we are an "easy target"? Or are they happening because we are Christian in a muslim - majority land?

The root cause is ultimately Islam. This needs to be dealt with.

After 9/11, many muslims were screaming out saying that what does America expect when it gives support to Israel?
After the London Bombings, they were screaming saying "What does England expect when it is attacking muslim lands"?
After the Dutch murder of Van Gogh, they said : "but he has insulted Islam".

The Coptic Christians have not drawn cartoons of the Islamic Prophet, we have not said ONE BAD WORD against Islam, and the Pope even said if anyone says a bad word against Islam, he/she is not a Christian.
We are not the cause of, nor do we support the wars in the Middle East either.

I believe that Copts DO have equal rights in Egypt. Maybe not at all levels of society, ok.. fine, but generally, its not about discrimination. Terrorist attacks are the cause of Islam's call to rid Egypt of Christianity.

The reason why such attacks will perpetuate is simple: there are many muslims do not see nor practice their faith. At the same time, there are muslims (known as terrorists) who practice their faith.

We are attacked by those who practice their faith, yet who speaks for them are those who are peaceful (non fanaticals) who say to us "This is not Islam".

I think what they mean to say is this : "This cannot be Islam, because I'm a nice person".

What is the answer? How do we educate muslims about their Quran so they are aware of what is in it? so that they are aware of what its asking them to do??

These are difficult issues, but I hate wasting time. I prefer to address them. Its pointless protesting and asking America for help. If America KNEW that Islam was the problem, they would not have gone into war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rather, they felt that those who have a radical view of Islam, happen to be in Iraq and Afghanistan.

America has extremely short term memory, and no patience, and it has a lot of power.

Muslims, equally, look at America as "Evil". Lol... they cannot distinguish, for the life of them, that America = a Country, and Christianity/Islam = Religions.

They cannot see that.

Are US Soldiers in Iraq building Churches??

As far as I know, many US soldiers have ended up converting to Islam to marry Iraqi women they've met there.

I know this post is long, but I really want to know WHAT can we do to stop attacks like this happening??

My congratulations for the Feast of Nativity of our Lord, to whom is the glory.

Be all well, shepherded by God who keeps you. May we hear all good about you. May you have contemplations in the glorious Nativity and its happenings. As for us, I want you not to worry about us – we are well…

The painful circumstances that happened to us have brought compassion upon us from all sides, as well as extreme care and eagerness in protecting the churches, as well as care for our cause. Also, tribulation, by its nature, makes the soul closer to God. And we believe that God is the Protector and Helper, and that “unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” We also believe the promise of the Lord to His Church, that the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. Therefore all are in peacefulness. Be calm all of you, assured of the work of the Lord, and all of you to rejoice in this feast, for it is the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I mean, His Incarnation was the starting point for all the good that graced humanity till it was crowned with redemption. As well, the Incarnation was proof of the love of God to us, and the reconciliation that was fulfilled between heaven and earth. Rejoice in the Lord my dear children, and again I say rejoice. In all circumstances that pass by you, say ‘it’s all for good.’ (كله للخير)

Finally, my love to you all.

Be absolved from the Holy Spirit.

(Signed)
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III
Feast of Nativity 2011

Dear all,
Having been reading posts on this forum for the last couple of days I can infer that 90% of the churches in Egypt and the diaspora finished liturgies before 12am. I don't agree with such a practice (although I do understand that for practicality issues some in the diaspora are used to finishing early anyway). My biggest disappointment is that the evil one managed to shake our rites. Would love to hear your views
Oujai

I was searching on the web recently for more of His Holiness' books, and found (edit: link edited out). I know the site hosting the document considers us monophysites (which is false and I do see quite a few basic errors in this document on our standpoint).

It is all about that Christ had two Natures in one person, which is not (I'm not sure about this so please correct me if I'm wrong) the Oriental Orthodox belief of miaphysitism. I didn't read the whole thing, but this is what I gathered. The Eastern Orthodox believe in 2 natures in one hypostasis while we believe in one united nature in one hypostasis (this one nature is a united nature of the Divine and human nature without confusion without mingling and without alteration). Also where does the Eastern Orthodox term "in thought alone" fit in.

Also I found it disturbing that the Patriarch Timothy considered a saint in our church wrote this:

"Cyril... having excellently articulated the wise proclamation of Orthodoxy, showed himself to be fickle and is to be censured for teaching contrary doctrine: after previously proposing that we should speak of one nature of God the Word, he destroyed the dogma that he had formulated and is caught professing two Natures of Christ" [Timothy Ailouros, "Epistles to Kalonymos," Patrologia Graeca, Vol LXXXVI, Col. 276; quoted in The Non Chalcedonian Heretics, p. 13]."

Is there an explanation behind some of this. I think I just got 10 times as confused as I was before. Any answers or explanations on the document and the miaphysite vs. dyophysite controversy would be really welcome.

Thank you and Please pray for me.

Hello everybody,

Okay, so martyrdom became a potential reality for a lot of Copts this Christmas, both inside and Outside Egypt. My Church was among those that were threatened, but we went to Christmas liturgy anyway of course. It was emptier than Christmas is normally. There were police everywhere and people standing at the doors, and getting in and out was a pain. This was necessary of course. During mass, I was thinking that it could be the last prayer of my life, and I started wondering whether I was prepared to meet God?

What do you need at the end of your life?

To have fulfilled your message? I don't even know what my message is.
fruits of the spirit? Love, longsuffering etc... I can barley stand my own brother when he's annoying...its not a secret...

What else do you need to be prepared? and how did you feel during Christmas mass?

I guess this is what the fathers mean by thinking about the end all the time :) God really gave us a wake-up call this Christmas. haha.

Hi all,

I just thought I would share an e-mail that I got.

Copts in Canada step up security for church holiday; Bombing in Egypt, threatened priests; all create fear as Orthodox Christians prepare for Christmas
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa-area Copts, like their brethren elsewhere in Canada, have stepped up security at their churches following the weekend suicide bombing in Egypt and recent threats against Coptic priests in this country.
On New Year's Day, 21 people were killed and 79 wounded in a suicide bombing at a Coptic church in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria. The attack was the worst in nearly three decades of on-and-off sectarian violence against the country's Copts, who compose about 10 per cent of Egypt's 80 million people.
The violence, however, is no longer confined to Egypt. Coptic parishes in Europe and the United States have been threatened by Islamists. Now, it seems, Canada's 255,000 Copts are also on the hate list.
"It's an epidemic in Egypt, the hatred of Muslims who treat Christians as second-class citizens," says Father Mikhail Fam, the priest for the St. George and St. Anthony Coptic Orthodox Church of Ottawa.
"The message that is coming from terrorist cells (in the Middle East) is to kill and bomb Christian parishes. These threats have spread not only to Egypt, but also to parishes outside the country, including Canada."
Indeed, Canada's Coptic community became highly security conscious after the names and addresses of 100 Copts, along with photographs, were published on an Islamist website in December. Private security firms have been hired to protect churchgoers during the upcoming Christmas period.
"The churches are going to conduct ceremonies with no problem. However, security will be tightened around the buildings," said Sherif Mansour, spokesman for the Canadian Coptic Association.
In Ottawa, Fam says, the RCMP and Ottawa Police have boosted patrols around the city's two Coptic churches, which serve about 5,000 parishioners.
While Fam hasn't received any threats, he's aware of other priests -- particularly those who have been more vocal about the situation in Egypt -- who have.
"The biggest parish we have in Canada is in Mississauga, and they have received direct threats in the past month," he says, referring to the St. Mary and St. Athanasius Coptic Orthodox Church.
Despite the threats, Ottawa Copts will hold a memorial service Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Fam's church to commemorate those killed or wounded in the weekend attack. Members of Parliament and Egyptian Embassy staff have been invited.
The attacks have been condemned by numerous governments, including those of Iran and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti described the church bombing as an act aimed at turning non-Muslim against Muslim.
In his annual New Year's speech at the Vatican, the Pope demanded that governments everywhere do more to protect religious minorities. In Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak vowed to find those responsible for the bombing, which he blamed on "foreign hands."
Despite the condemnations and appeals for calm, Christians in Egypt have reacted with fury. On Monday, Christian protesters clashed for a third day with police. The unrest came as police tightened church security for Christmas, which Copts celebrate on Friday, as investigators hunted the perpetrators of the Alexandria church bombing. Tensions also erupted in a northern Cairo neighbourhood as protesters threw rocks at police who tried to block a march by thousands of Copts. Police responded by throwing rocks back at the protesters.
Copts, who make up the Middle East's largest Christian community, have been the targets of much violence in recent years. In January 2000, for example, 20 Copts died in clashes with Muslims in the southern Egyptian village of Kosheh. It was the worst sectarian violence until this latest attack.
Saturday's attack was also the latest in a series of increasing violent assaults against vulnerable Christian communities. An Oct. 31 siege on a Baghdad church killed nearly 60 parishioners, prompting a new Christian exodus from the Iraqi capital and the northern city of Mosul. Last week, attacks against 10 Christian targets left an elderly couple dead after a bomb placed on their doorstep exploded when they opened the door.
Fam, who came to Canada from Egypt nearly 20 years ago, is not optimistic there will be an end to such assaults anytime soon. He says the threats and the attacks reflect a concerted campaign by extremists against Christians throughout the Middle East, and all the condemnations will do little good until the attitudes of Muslims towards those of other faiths change.
"There has been attacks and killings and persecutions (against Copts) in Egypt for a long time," Fam says. "Every time, we express our concerns to the Egyptian government, but unfortunately nothing happens. There's a reaction, things die down and we wait for another incident to happen."
Fam is also worried such incidents will come to Canada. The country's hard-won traditions of equality are being undermined by the presence of those who abuse multicultural policy to suit their own ideological ends, he says.
"While multiculturalism is a great policy, where everybody is treated equally, it's also a double-edged sword because people with a hidden agenda can find it to be very fertile soil for planting the seeds of their own ideology."

Just wanted to know if any of you have or know where to find a so-called kill/death list. It has about 200 names of copts around the world that are targetted by Al-Quaeda.
God bless, Pray for me,

Cyril

The excuse given to these recent attacks (in Alexandria Egypt, 1/1/11) is that there is a false rumour going around that 2 women have converted to Islam and are being held, under their free will, in Coptic monasteries.

I just saw video clips of them admitting that they've never converted to Islam. But all this over a rumour? The killing of 70 Iraqi Christians and 23 Coptic Christians OVER A RUMOUR!!!!

OK.. my question is this:

Why don't the women come out and just say what happened? Surely nothing will happen to them.

Are they scared that if they admit that they've never been a muslim then they'd be killed for apostacy? or for "insulting Islam" for not being a muslim.

Can someone tell me why the Church just doesn't ask these women to go on National TV and tell their story ONCE AND FOR ALL!!

Thanks

Christ is Born! Let us Glorify Him!

Hello everyone, although I am not a Coptic Christian, I am a member of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, and I have a dear friend who is a Coptic Orthodox priest-monk from Egypt who lives in Canada now. He doesn't have a parish, and celebrates the Mass by himself most times. I don't think he even has a bishop--I've tried asking, but I don't get an answer (I'm thinking he doesn't understand me). My question: like the Byzantine Orthodox Churches, it is the same in the Oriental Orthodox Churches that a priest is always to be attached to either a parish or a monastery and be subject to a specific bishop at all times, or are dispensations sometimes granted for some to be "rogue" (for lack of a better word)? I don't know if I need to further break down my inquiry, but I'll put this out there first and work with the comments that come up. Thank you everyone.

I thought this video might ease some of the tensions, it is a video of my son doing some prayers before bedtime. He loves his icon of St. Mary, that he calls "mama" and he points to the icon of his patron saint, Yohannes Chrysostom and say "Yohannes"! I hope you all enjoy.
