GALATIANS 3:13

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
Hi. I need URGENT HELP:

GALATIANS 3:

But by becoming a curse for us Christ has redeemed us from the curse that the Law brings; for the scripture says, "Anyone who is hanged on a tree is under God's curse."

WHy does it say Christ became a curse for us???

What kind of thing to say is that!!!!!!!!

• I think the song "Fool for you" by Nichole Nordeman may hold the answer...

here are the words:

There are times when faith and common sense do not align,
when hardcore evidence of you is hard to find,
and I am silenced in the face of argumenative debate,
it's a long hill it's a lonley climb. Maybe it's true.

CHORUS:
Cause they want proof,
They want proof of all these mysteries I claim,
Cause only fools would want to chant a dead man's name.
I would be a fool for you all because you asked me to.
A simpleton who's seeming naive,
I do believe You came and made Yourself a fool for me.

I admit that in my darkest hours I've asked what if,
What if we created some kind of man made faith like this,
Out of good intention or emotional invention,
and after life is through there will be no You.

Cause they want proof of all these miracles I claim,
Cause only fools believe that men can walk on waves.
Maybe it's true.

Unaware of popularity,
and unconcerned with dignity,
You made me free.
That's proof enough for me.

I would be a fool for You,
Only if You asked me to,
A simpletonwho's only think of,
The cause of love.

I will speak Jesus name,
and if that makes me crazy,
they can call me crazed,
I'm happy to be seemingly naive,
I do believe You came and
made Yourself a fool for me.

Well, it's pretty self-explanatory, & a GREAT song might I add!
So maybe it means curse in the same context that 'fool'is used in the song.. ?

I'm really just taking a random guess here.. but it's the first possibility that popped into my head.
• Christ became a curse for us

St Paul explains that Jesus died on the cross, "hanged" (meaning lifted) on tree logs:
* Jews, Romans and Gentiles were very ashamed of this, and feared most to end up this way. They knew it is a kind of curse if they or some relative dies like that on a cross, that's why it was an extremely shameful thing; further, the Jews were definitely aware it is a real curse because God told them so.
* God accepted this to happen, to endure pains and disrespect before and during His Crucifixion to carry Himself all our shameful curse and iniquity instead of us, and pass us over to eternal life via His glorious Resurrection.
* No ordinary man would by any means have been able to redeem the eternal curse of all the eternally corrupt mankind except Jesus Christ who is the incarnated holy and eternal Son of God.

@ Hizz_chiilld: nice song lyrics

What kind of thing to say is that!!!!!!!!

It's a common theme that is found throughout Paul's letters and in the writings of the Fathers.  There is always a contrast made to show us how wonderful our God is.

Christ became a curse, so that we would be blessed.
Christ became sin, so that we may become righteous.
Christ became man, so that man may become God.
Christ subjected Himself to the Law, so that man might be freed from the Law.

It's all stark contrasts which illustrate the consequences of Christ's Incarnation in the economy of man's salvation: A truly wonderful thing.
• Christ became man, so that man may become God

not sure that it's ok to say such statement...

please explain what do u mean exactly .
• Very simple answer to your question. Christ was cruxified on a piece of wood, agreed?

In Dueteronomy 21:22-23 we find: " If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, 23 you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God's curse."

Saint Paul was only reitering what was in the OT. Our Lord Jesus Christ took the curse we were supposed to take...
