Christ in the Old Testament

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
I plead with each and every one of you to read the Old Testament this lent. I find it amazing that Christ is in it, through out. I am reading St Cyril of Alexandrias commentary on Isaiah, and the story of Moses and the israelites. All I see is Christ throughout. Amazing.

    To make it even weirder (if that is a word), I am reading it and my FOC recommended without him knowing that I am reading it.

  • Behold, God is my salvation,
    I will trust and not be afraid;
    "For you, O Lord, is my strength and song;
    He also has become my salvation."~Isaiah 12:2

    But those who wait on the Lord
    Shall renew their strength;
    They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
    They shall run and not be weary,
    They shall walk and not faint.~Isaiah 40:31

    Fear not, for I am with you;
    Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you,
    Yes, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’~Isaiah 41:10

    Surely He has borne our griefs
    And carried our sorrows;
    Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
    Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions,
    He was bruised for our iniquities;
    The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
    And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray;
    We have turned, every one, to his own way;
    And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.~Isaiah 53:4-6

    Here are a couple of meditations so far in Moses' story:

    -Pharaoh wanted all the boys 2 yrs and younger killed; the boys represent "knowledge and logic" while the girls represent "emotions and feelings", and the devil is always trying to destroy the 'logic' part of our spiritual life and lead us by 'emotions'.

    -Jochebed (Moses' mom) put baby moses in an ark, by the river's bank, while crying; the ark represents the same as Noah's salvation, which is the church, the river's bank represents the father's of the church, and the mother crying is prayers for each other.

    -Baby Moses in the water represents baptism, and then he was given a new name by Pharaoh's daughter (as we are when we are baptized), then Pharaoh's daughter asked Jochebed to nurse Moses, which represents the church telling the mom to take care of the new Christian because now the baby belongs to God.

    Cool fact: The Israelites stayed 400 years in Egypt until Moses delivered them.
  • Is there anyway that book can be read online?
  • I will post some commentary on Isaiah by St Cyril of Alexandria.

    I am amazed. I knew from what people have said that Christ is in the OT everywhere, but I did not realize to what extent, it is beautiful!
