Christ's descent into Hades

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
Hi Folks,

I have a very simple question. What was the purpose of Christ's descent into Hades? Is Hades or Sheol another word for Hell? Apart from the following verse "  1 Peter 3:19  by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison",are there any other exact refernces in the bible that declare Christ's descent into the nether world?

  • Hades is the waiting place now for the unrighteous people while paradise is the opposite, its the waiting place for the righteous. Christ's purpose for going down to hades was to free the righteous that were trapped down there because of the corrupt nature and the sin adam and eve dared to commit. He took them to paradise their right place
  • Hades is not Hell, it is a 'waiting place' until Christ returns.

Our Lord descended to Hades to free the righteous souls (think the Patriarchs, Job, Moses, as well as common good people, etc.) from the suffering which is Hades. Just as there is Paradise which translates to Heaven at the Second Coming, the same it is with Hades and Hell.

I am not sure about another verse...

    Hope I helped ;)
