Mujawwad and Coptic Chants

edited December 1969 in Hymns Discussion
Hello all,

I don't know if this would fit correctly under any of these threads, but I think this one would be most relevant:

This is dealing with particularly Egyptian Islam and its rather colorful tradition of reciting the Qur'an - Mujawwad. I had read an article here on Tasbeha talking about the Copts and their music, with a category devoted to Copts and Arab music. I was wondering if anyone could help me understand the origin of Mujawwad reciting and perhaps how Coptic chant or ancient Egyptian chant helped to shape it? Because as far as I'm concerned, Mujawwad is quite a different way to recite the Qur'an as opposed to someone in Saudi Arabia or the sort. So I'm curious if the high notes, pauses, etc., could be related/influenced to Coptic chants?

I'm sorry if this is absolutely un-related to the general topic arena or the board itself. But I'm interested in this, and haven't been able to find really any much background and development info on such way to chant.

Thank you,
Kolya
