Taking up our cross
On several occasions in the gospels of Saints Matthew, mark and Luke, we find that our Lords gives us the directions that we need if we want to follow Him, and that is, that we “… take up (our) cross, and follow (Him)..”

Although we all know that our Lord became incarnate and lived on this earth, with all of its difficulties and sufferings, for us and for our salvation, we sometimes expect to live our own lives without difficulty, and if we do experience any problems, we become quite angry with God, and feel that He has left us.

In the above scenario, we forget the words of our Lord, that “A servant is not greater than his master” (John 15:20) meaning that He suffered, will sometimes also suffer. If, on the other hand, we have a true love for God, and trust that He loves us and will always act in out best interests, we can then do nothing but accept everything in our lives with thanks and joy. In this situation, we have every confidence that we can hand our lives to God totally, and are assured that everything which is done will always be done for the glory of His name, and for our entering His eternal Kingdom.

We have all heard there words before, especially at times of hardship, and quite often, we feel that they are words, which merely prepare us for further and greater suffering. This however is not at all the case.

Our great teacher, Saint Paul the apostle, reassures us that being with and like our Lord is not only about suffering, but also about joy and success, for he tells us that we will die and be buried with Him, but more importantly, that we will also rise with Him.

Our Lords resurrection came after the cross, just as eternal life and joy always come after death and suffering. Thus, let us never forget that the glorious cross is not merely a symbol of suffering and death, but more importantly, of joy and victory over death.

In our lives then, whether our cross be in the form of illness, the loss of a loved one, or any other loss, we must always be assured that after we bear it for a while with our Lord, we will reach a stage at which we will see our Lord’s words coming to life, “therefore you now have sorrow; but….. “Your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.” (John 16:22)
