    More than a lifetime.

Definitely. Just knowing the names of all the hymns and at what occasion they are said is a hard enough task.
  • Wait, why would it be so hard to learn them?

There's so many more hymns than you think. Its not impossible, but you literally need a lifetime to learn them.

welll....a simple answer is that we don't even KNOW about all of them.
  • A person I know did it by 27. He knows all the hymns of the church which we know of. When they reveal more, he will learn them lol.

I didn't think it was possible either but...

    RO
  • tell me his name and contact info.
  • Do Ibrahim Ayad or Wagdi Bishara know all the hymns?

  • My fellow deacons, When you read the story of Cantor: Mikhail Guirguis El- Batanouni you 'll know that he learnt all the hymns by the age of 18.

It really depends on how committed you are to learning the heritage of your church. If you dedicate certain times every week  to learning Coptic hymns; you will then end up learning at least 20 hymns a year... Hence, it's a very possible thing to learn all hymns, you just need enough dedication. Moreover, regular attendance in Tasbeha, matins , morning liturgies,...etc. will greatly & speedily enhance your level in Coptic, especially if you have other deacons in your church who know better than you and you should then look up to them get motivated..

    Pray for me
  • All the hymns? Or just tasbeha?

I actually had to look up this verse, lol.

THere is a deacon in my church that, no joke, knows EVERY known Coptic hymn! He can easily converse with you in Coptic, he memorised entire prayers in Coptic, including the Creed. Not only does he know every hymn, but he even understands ALL the rites and the season for every hymn and tune. Name any hymn, he knows it. If he is the only old deacon, tasbeha can easily last for +3 hours. I didn't even know that 'teoi en hikanos' had more than 2 tunes, yet he knows all 7 tunes... I can go on lol

And he is only in his early 30's.

One thing that I can assure you, is that it will need dedication, patience and more dedication.  :D

Impressive he understands coptic?so he can speak in coptic thats amazing.
  • I think we're all using a different term for "all hymns". like minatasgeel said we dont even know all the hymns. Just because you know a lot doesn't mean its everything.
  • So how DOES someone even do that? Who taught him? Where/how did he learn all the hymns, rites, coptic prayers, etc.
  • Seven tunes of Teoi En Hikanos? Someone enlighten me!!!

there isn't. he prob meant to sat the seven tunes AND teoi enhikanos el-kebera.
  • markmarcos,

Yep, he completely understands Coptic, he can read, write and speak it. The thing that amazes me is that he bought the Coptic dictionary and started learning from that- by himself!

He was telling me that he started learning since he was about 10-12 years... so, as everyone said, it will take a LONG time ;) Another important point that he always made and got annoyed about, is that liturgical hymns aren't just any 'song'. They are prayer. So in order for you to begin learning you need to have the right aims with righteous intentions.

One thing that I can tell you about this deacon, is that he loves/enjoys hymns, and I think it's because he finally understood their potency.. Reminds me of what Chrysostom said, "Nothing elevates the soul, nothing gives it wings as a liturgical hymn does."

His main source was Ibrahim Ayad. And anything that Ibrahim Ayad didn't record he would then refer to the HICS (Fr Metias Nasr mainly :D). And then he would listen to Mo3allem Tafik, Mikhail, Sadek...

As for the prayers, he knows how read Coptic and understands the meaning and the Coptic text is can be found in Coptic agpias.

Sorry, I was mistaken. Like Mina said, there aren't 7 tunes (I was a bit overexcited :-[)... But he does know all 3 ways (which includes teoi enhikanos 'el-kebera'!!!), & the 5 ways of saying 'Ten oh ensok' (in the long tunes).
