St. Evagrios on "Thoughts that burden us"

Being a sinner myself, I thought it might be helpful to others who are like me, (if they are here), to start a thread on how to "deal" with sin. As I read St. Evagrios on this, I will share some discoveries with you, and perhaps, if you dare, you can share what it means to you and how it works for you? I do not start this thread for polemical interrests, merely for the purpose of dealing with my own sins, in the hope that sharing with others might benefit us both. This post is the first one, how many will follow I do not know, God knows.

In our struggle to live as Christians, we often have certain sin-habits burdeining us. St. Evagrios was well-known in his days for his accuracy in discerning of spirits. he could identify which sins were causing most of the problems of an individual, and he could identify the evil spirit whom we were wrestling with. To St. Evagrius every sin-thought is inspired by a demon, and holy-thoughts are inspired by angels. The battle with sin is not just a battle against our flesh, but we are battling the demons who "specialize" in these sins. Sin is not just that, it is connected to the evil one who seeks to destroy our lives.

St. Evagrios came up with a "remedy" a cure for our sin-sick souls. It is the practical application of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in such a way that we learn to recognize sin-patterns, and the demons behind it. We than learn how to fight them in the power of Jesus Christ our Lord. The first important stage in this battle is to achieve passionlessness (apatheia), which is the freedom of the soul from every enslavement of sin. It is not the freedom of temptation, but the control (freedom) not to give in to them.

The second stage in this battle is "contemplation of nature", so that we learn to read creation as God's writings and revelation as St. Anthony the Great did. This is also the stage where the deeper (spiritual) meanings of Holy Scripture are disclosed to us.

The third stage is described as "theology" which is the achieving of the fully deified state, where we have united with God. This is where we have become God in so far as God became man. God, in St. Evagrios almost always means the Trinity. Theology is therefore intimate acquaintance with the Trinity.

All these stages are not to be seen as strictly separated, however. It is possible that someone on the beginners-level (working towards stage 1) receives a grace of experience of oneness with the Trinity, just as it is possible (even necessary) that a theologian continues to "fight" temptations as he did working towards stage 1.

The Orthodox Way, in St. Evagrios is the following:

CHRISTIANITY is the teaching of our Savior Christ consisting of asctical practice, the [contemplation of] nature, and theology.

Praktikos 1

The sin-habits are recognized in the following pattern:

THERE are eight generic [tempting-] thoughts (logismoi), that contain within themselves every [tempting-]thought:
first is that of gluttony;

and with it, sexual immorality;

third, love of money;

fourth, sadness;

fifth, anger;

sixth acedia;

seventh, vainglory;

eighth, pride.

Whether these thoughts are able to disturb the soul or not is not up to us; but whether they linger or not, and whether they arouse passions or not; that is up to us.

Praktikos 6

The passions are inflicted upon us without our will. They come to us, they are even unleashed upon us by evil spirits (demons). This we cannot help, and we are not responsible for having a bad thought. We are only responsible for that which is within our power to change. To let these thoughts linger in our hearts, and to cherish them is a choice we make, and for this we are responsible. For we could also decide not to let them linger, but to fight them off (asceticism). Passions are aroused by letting these thoughts linger, passions are "healed" and "kept off" by not feeding them on these thoughts, by not letting them linger. To realize these things is step 1 in winning the spiritual warfare!

IC XC

Grigorii

Hey everyone, I was having a very interesting conversation with a friend of mine recently, and we started talking about logic (don't ask me how we got there, I've got a horrible memory.) Anyways, later in the conversation I said "You can't know God through logic alone." He didn't agree.

What you should know is that my friend is really big on philosophy. He loves reading stuff like Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Hobbes, Descartes, etc . What he got from all that stuff is a strong belief in logic and how logic is the most important thing in a man. I don't agree, however, I'm a horrible debator, a can never make a good argument. What I tried to say was that you can only know God through your heart, that to be with God is to love God, not to reason to him. I made an analogy that logic vs. emotion is like water vs. oil, they never mix.

What do you guys think of this? "Can you know God through logic alone?" Thanks very much, God be with you. +

If I'm not insane, in Numbers chapter two, there are thirteen tribes of Israel. The tribes were divided into camps on four sides of the Tabernacle and three tribes were on every side..this is hard to explain but for example, on the east side was Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. On the west there were three others, etc. meaning that it would be 3x4=12 tribes yet the Levites were not counted in this..they were to camp in the middle with the Tabernacle making it thirteen tribes..so I looked back on Genesis chapter 35 and found that two tribes mentioned in Numbers were not counted among Jacob's children; Mannaseh and Ephraim but perhaps one of these is Joseph's tribe since his tribe is not mentioned by his name in Numbers yet there is one extra even if that is the case. If anyone understands, help would be appreciated. I can't explain it better :-\

hey guys,

ok so in the past few days i have had a couple of interesting experiences and so i wanted to share them with you and start an interesting discussion( keyword there discussion) i would like to have a nice discussion and hear everyones opinions. So first ill share with you what happened to me, well i was walking home yesterday and i was with one of my best friends and somehow we got into talking about christ and church and he mentioned how he felt bad about going to church because he had lost his virginity( i was shocked this was news to me) and so anyway hes been to our church before but then he started saying how could the church expect him to stay a vrigin till marriage he said it was abnormal...! This Shocked me i mean is that what society has become being a virgin till marriage is abnormal!?!?!?! And then today we had a speaker come into class and talk to use about sex and so she asked how many people have had sex before almost all the class raised there hands! then she said how many more than once? 2 people put their hands down im a freshman in high school!? this is shocking.... Ive lived in America my whole life and have never felt society this way so here are my questions... I know we have some older users here..where things like this at your age? when you were in highschool did you feel the same way ? did these things happen around you? also i have some interesting facts i would like to post about in sex in america i found out today in a brochure i received from the County Pregnancy Center and it is taken from reputable
medical studies

Sexually Transmitted Diseases(STDs) in the USA:
-STDs are the most common diseases in America Next to teh common cold and flu
-1 in 5 Americans Are presently infected with an STD
-15 million Americans become infected with STDs Yearly- 41,000 a day
-45 million americans ar infected with an incurable STD
-STDsinfect 3 million teenagers a year
-Every 2 seconds Some one contracts an STD
-Of the 70 million people with STDs 80% have no idea because they have no symptoms

Scary isnt it?! well i really would like to have a mature discussion and see what you guys think about this and maybe get the answer to my question.

aghape,
chris

Hello all,

I am sure you all remember Pope John Paul II, may he rest in peace. Recently, I heard that the current Roman pope, Pope Benedict XVI, has waived the minimum period required to declare someone a saint for Pope John Paul II. I am not 100% sure, but I think the minimum requirement is to wait at least 3 or 5 years...i can't remember.

In our church, the required minimum waiting period is 50 years...am I correct? (that's why we don't officially declare H.H. Pope Kyrillos VI as a saint at the moment).

Anyways, what I was thinking is that does the Pope have the right to waive a specific law of the church just to please the people? Many Polish people wanted Pope John Paul II declared "an immediate saint" (Pope John Paul II was of Polish descent).

Has there been any point in our church history where the Pope has waived an official church rule?

Sinful Servant

Hey all,

I was wondering about something: since our Coptic Orthodox faith was started by St. Mark in Alexandria, shouldn't the Pope's seat be in Alexandria? Why is it at the Abbassiya Cathedral now? Why did H.H. Pope Kyrillos VI open the new Cathedral in Cairo? Plus, what is the Azbakia?

Sorry to throw a lot of questions at you...and btw, when I say "The Pope's Seat", I mean the Patriarchate (also, if u notice, the Pope's title is "Pope of Alexandria and the See of St. Mark").

Peace...
Sinful Servant
