So what's is a name?

If we are given our names at birth when we have no say in the matter, then do you think it is right that we should continue to use say Arabic or Islamic names? particularly when those that enter the priesthood (the church) change their names and adopt a Christian name?

I mean "Peter" is a Greek name meaning stone/rock. Do you think it is acceptable that we should have say the name "Mohamed" as a Christian.

This is a true life issue of great concern. Perhaps many of you are aware the we have Islamic people from other faiths that convert to Christainity. These people although have been touched by God they feel that somehow they would anger their family, community etc... if they knew - something that is quite common back in Egypt.

What's your view? What's the Coptic Orthodox Church's view?

Article: THE WILES OF THE DEVIL by HG Bishop Moussa

THE WILES OF THE DEVIL
H. G. Bishop Moussa

" Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil " (Ephesians 6:11)
When we speak about the wiles or temptations of the devil, we speak concerning three aspects or channels through which we are tempted:

The flesh and its lusts (internal temptation)

The world (external temptation)

The devil
At times we may look at these three forces and imagine that being holy is an impossibility! However, we must remember that the flesh and its lusts are limited, and the world is limited, and Satan himself is limited also. On the other hand, our beloved Lord is unlimited. So if we join ourselves to the Lord:
Christ + me, the result will be victory!
In our lives, we face many internal and external temptations, but if we are abiding in the Lord and committed to the Lord, then we will be triumphant, and through God's grace, conquer all the wiles of the devil!

The Flesh and its Lusts:

The first enemy we must deal with is the lusts which war within our body. And yet, our church has provided us with a solution to this inner problem:

Regeneration through Baptism

Confirmation through anointing by the Myron oil

Salvation through receiving the Holy Communion
In baptism, we were immersed in water three times, symbolizing the holy Trinity. As a result of this baptism, I became 'regenerated' in that my old nature died, and a new nature was born; after having been physically born from my father and mother, in baptism I was reborn through the church and into the church.

Having been baptized, I was then 'confirmed' with the holy oil of Myron 36 times. The Myron is the Holy Spirit, and so by receiving the sacrament of 'confirmation', I had become the possession of the Holy Spirit. 36 is symbolic in that it is the multiplication of three by 12. Three signifies the trinity and 12 signifies the disciples of the Lord.

Glory be to our God forever Amen.....

Just another beneficial article.. I got it from an online newsletter...
from youthbishopric.com

its nice if u get a chance to read it...

Over the recent weeks, I’ve engaged in a number of discussions with people on various controversial and difficult issues pertaining to matters of doctrine, morality, ecclesiology etc. Although I have disagreed with many, I have only been disappointed by some; that disappointment being in relation to their stubborn and unOrthodox approach to the matter. Although they claim to be Orthodox Christians, they do not speak or discuss like Orthodox Christians and their reluctance and resistance to conform or adapt their approach gives us very little reason to even accept any truth in their personal claim to Orthodoxy.

One of the fundamental differences between Orthodox Christianity and Protestantism is with regards to the Orthodox Church’s adherence and appeal to the Apostolic tradition as expounded by our Holy Fathers and as preserved by the Church which possesses ultimate authority by the Holy Spirit.

Discernment of, and faith in, doctrinal and moral truths is a matter of spiritual insight available only to those in communion with the Church and in union with the Holy Trinity; as such an intellectual or rational pursuit to come to truthful conclusions regarding such matters is futile.

Since the Protestant Reformation in the West however, a new and deceptive approach to discerning the eternal truths of God had arisen. According to this new approach, one’s individual conscience and private beliefs, become elevated over and above that of the Church’s authority - which is reduced to negligible-zero. Many Protestants replace the Church’s authority with Biblical authority (although the Bible is often left for the individual’s personal interpretation nonetheless.) Academic research into theological and Biblical analysis proliferates as scholars continue publishing their own opinions, each in conflict with the other according to their own personally biased presuppositions, yet each claiming objectivity and reason in support of their theories or ideologies. Theology is thus reduced to mere academic research as opposed to the expression of the Church's spiritual experience.

Individual conscience surely has its place in Orthodoxy (one might not be able to say the same for Roman Catholicism), however to employ personal reason according to individual conscience outside of the experience of the Church, and in neglect of the Church’s authority and Church tradition, is simply and bluntly a Protestant approach to Christianity.

St. Irenaeus states in his Against the Heresies, Book 3:

But, again, when we refer them to that tradition which originates from the apostles, [and] which is preserved by means of the succession of presbyters in the Churches, they object to tradition, saying that they themselves are wiser not merely than the presbyters, but even than the apostles, because they have discovered the unadulterated truth...

It is within the power of all, therefore, in every Church, who may wish to see the truth, to contemplate clearly the tradition of the apostles manifested throughout the whole world; and we are in a position to reckon up those who were by the apostles instituted bishops in the Churches, and [to demonstrate] the succession of these men to our own times; those who neither taught nor knew of anything like what these [heretics] rave about... .

In this order, and by this succession, the ecclesiastical tradition from the apostles, and the preaching of the truth, have come down to us. And this is most abundant proof that there is one and the same vivifying faith, which has been preserved in the Church from the apostles until now, and handed down in truth.

Please feel free to share opinions of concordance or dissonance with what I have said - without getting personal. Thank you.

Peace.

Can somebody enlighten me on the matter?

Catholics don't eat fish on Fridays.
Copts don't fast on Wednesdays and Fridays (without dairy or animal products?

So where did all this start or come from? Are these church rules or Biblical?

And what happens if people cannot fast for whatever the reason (health, whatever,.........)

And will these people go straight to hell (as I guess Judas seems to gone that way)?

I am interested to share your views and comments. Remember the good answer is not the one that resites, or just concentrates on the topic of fasting, for I am sure well are all aware of the Biblical FACTS. I am intersted on the days of the week, why the types of goods, and why Fish with catholics? A little research here will set the difference between a 'pass' and a distinction grade.
Seriously, I would love to know.

I did not have a chance to air something on topics relating to Sex, Contraception etc..............

Without going int these in details. Surely the question that we are all asking is that is this right thing to do (where the definition of right being the Christian / Coptic Orthodox thing).

Not even having to reserach any of these topics, it is clear to me that there must be a difference between MARRIED and UNMARRIED. This difference is your answer.
