Fasting and Repentance

[H.H. POPE SHENOUDA III

Those who fast and receive no benefit from it must have fasted in a wrong way; in this case, what is to blame is not fasting itself, but the method followed.

Fasting is a period of concentrated spiritual activity, a period of loving God and adhering to Him. As a result of this love, one who fasts is lifted above the level of the body and its concerns. He soars above worldly matters, to get a taste of the heavenly. It is a period of sacred feelings towards God, and ultimately, it harbours the feeling that one is close to, and familiar with, Him. It is a period of being spiritually content with the self and with God, and of standing against the Devil.

Days of fasting are specifically for spiritual energy, and are a period of storage.

From the depths of spirituality acquired, through fasting, one who fasts receives spiritual energy which supports him during his non-fasting days. Thus, he who is honest in his spiritual activity during Lent, for instance, receives a spiritual stock that strengthens him throughout the following fifty sacred days, during which there is neither fasting nor metanoias.

If one wants to fast in a spiritual fashion, one must bear in mind the following remarks:

1. Fasting must be spiritual in its target and motives.

It should not be performed as an obligation, for praise, or out of custom. In fasting, one must place the love of God above materialistic and bodily things, in order to allow the soul its chance.

2. Fasting should be a period of penitence and purity of heart.
In fasting, the person must lead a holy life, acceptable in the sight of God, in which he confesses his sins and repents, then partakes of the holy sacraments.

3. Fasting should be a period of spiritual nourishment, and it should follow a strong spiritual schedule.

[glow=red,2,300]more[/glow]
http://www.youthbishopric.com/HomePage.asp?Lang=en

"

During confession he would point out the sins people had forgotten or of which they had difficulty repenting. Thus he told one woman about a person who was committing a certain sin. And when Vladyka left, it dawned on this woman that this was her sin. Then she ran after him and weeping asked him for forgiveness. The same woman had the habit of cooking blood and preparing sausages from it. Vladyka said to her:

"You know, I also used to eat blood, and did not repent of it. But then my bishop said to me: 'You know, Grisha, I have to excommunicate you from the Church for seven years.'

"'For what?'

"'For eating blood.'"

And then the woman understood that it was not Grisha who had eaten the blood, but her.
"
Sources of the Coptic Church Hymns
+ We have mentioned that Philo (1st century) told that the Early Christians did take the Ancient Egyptian tunes and put to them Christian texts.. Among those hymns: Gholgotha which Ancient Egyptians used when mummifying and Pek Ethronos whose first half is full of sadness and sorrow for the Pharaoh's death and the second full of joy to celebrate his wedding trip to the Sun Boat to take him to Ra3 in the world of eternity..

+ In this era the gift of spiritual composing was given to many who enriched the church with hymns.. As St.Clement of Alexandria who composed the Praise of the Lord the saviour, St.Athanasios the Apostolic who composed Monogenis St.Didimus the Blind who composed many of the hymns which are still in use until today and others such as the Syrian Mar Avraam who is called the Holy Spirit's Harp and lived with the Cyrenian Sinosius (370 AC) who believed in Christianity, married a Coptic woman, lived in Egypt and composed also.. Also Hillary from Poitier (386) the first Latin Hymn composer then Ambrosius the Prince of Latin Hymns and many others who were influenced by Egyptian music.. It is worth mentioning here that the Coptic Hymns used TODAY are the same which the Coptic scientist Ibn-Kabar Abul-Barakat (Shamsel-Re`assa) mentioned BY NAME in his well known Encyclopaedia in (1320 AC) Of course it was used long before his time..

Some Hebrew influence (Jewish Synagogues Music) came from the Triumphant Jews of Alexandria (Theprapieuta)

+ Some hymns were added by HH Pope Kyrollos IV from the Byzantine church as Ton Sina, Tolithos, Ei Parthenos and others.. We should say that the last section of the Liturgy's confession was slightly affected by the Greek..
"
Pagan?

From
http://www.geocities.com/coptichymns/about/musice.htm

Did Christ's divine nature ? suffer and die with His human body?
I do not think so because while Christ was dead then who would control the universe...

Does not the Father need the Person of the Son? and they can not be seperated can They?

I found (?) this piece from from someone who found it in another coptic forum (?) ... I think it answers one or some of my questions.. I guess maybe you do not have to answer anymore if you knew the answer (?) but if you think you know something you can add then add if you want to.. or if you want to say something okay to say say it..

But I did ask other questions..

"Surely, the Divine Nature is not susceptible to suffering, but when the Human Nature underwent suffering, it was united with the Divine Logos. The Holy Fathers explained this point through the analogy of the red hot iron. They said that when the blacksmith strikes the red hot iron, the hammer is actually striking both the iron and the fire united with it. The iron(Human Nature) alone bends (suffers) while the fire (Divine Nature) is untouched though it bends with the iron. Nevertheless, suffering which is related to the Human Nature can be attributed to the Divine Nature without distinction due to their union, as there is not seperation between the two Natures. St. Paul said, "Shepherd the Church of God which He purchased with His own blood"(Acts 20:28). Here we see St. Paul ascribing the blood to God (Divine Nature) even though God is Spirit(John 4:24) and the Blood is that of His Human Nature. But as we said that after the union of the Two Natures One Entity resulted to which we refer.

Taken from Pope Shenouda's Book, "The Nature of Christ"

2. At Saint George Sporting
a. Father Pishoy made a striking decision when first building the Church of Saint George, that he hired a Muslim artist to paint the Christ in Glory on the eastern wall of the sanctuary and the images of the four evangelists on the dome of the church.
b. Father Pishoy said a great artist was needed to do this work and he would not discriminate against a Muslim if he were the best qualified in Alexandria at that time.

From a word document (?)

You can download the word document (?) from? ..
http://www.stgeorgechurch.org/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=119

Click on download file

I think I would probably maybe discriminate against muslims in this case (?).. so that was maybe a surprise to me... Do you think what he did is right?

Would God help a Christian who follows Him paint well?
What if someone needed someone to draw Christ.. would christians be able to draw Christ better because maybe they have a better sense of what Christ should look like?

And you're still being forgiven aren't you? And it's a priest so how can it be wrong?
