Just a quick, possibly simple question about Job 40:15-24. What is the animal being described? I have heard some people argue it is a dinosaue, and say that it can't be an elephant or hippopotamaus because of the tail that is like a Cedar. I'm just curious as to what it animal it is refering to, and also about the Churches stance on dinosaurs? Thanks

Question on contraception and Genesis 38

Firstly, let me say if this topic offends anyone, I apologise for hurting your feelings, but I am honestly confused and need some guidance on this issue.

Ok, so basically I was reading "Homosexuality, Ordiniation of Women" by H. H. Pope Shenouda III and I came to "page 31", and noticed the following comment with regards to contraception:

Does the Coptic Church have a view on the use of artificial
contraception?
Yes, we accept it if it is not a way of abortion. This means if it
is used to avoid, rather than terminate, a pregnancy. However,
once a pregnancy has occurred, than it is a sin to abort the baby,
even if its age is only one hour. So, it is acceptable only to
prevent pregnancy.

I feel confused now because of some verses from the Bible which seem to disagree with this stance [Seem being the operative word]

Genesis 38:8-10 reads as follows:

8 And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD; therefore He killed him also.

My understanding of this verse has always been that God killed Onan for practicing contraception and "wasting" the seed of life via the withdrawl method. I think though that I must be wrong in this interpretation and ask that someone help me to better understand this verse?

Hey everybody,

I was reading 1 Corinthians and I read this verse and it didn't make too much sense to me.

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13)

I interpret this as God will not allow us to be tempted by a temptation so strong that we will not be able to bear it. If that's correct, does that mean that He won't allow us to be tempted by a temptation so strong that it will make us turn away from God? If this is correct, then how come people are being tempted by temptations so strong that they do turn away from God? It says in this verse that "...with the temptation will also make the way of escape..." I interpret that as the temptations that we do face will help us get closer to God because when we do escape the temptation then we will feel like God helped us conquer temptation, and so we will become closer to God. However, this obviously does not happen to everyone.

So, since my interpretations are obviously wrong, can someone please correct me? I know this is an important verse for our daily lives because the Bible pointed out this verse as a teaching of life's problems when faced with temptation. So I just want to understand it fully.

Thanks and God bless.

By the way, the rest of this chapter, especially the beginning, gives a really good lesson...

Hey everybody,

In John 3:1-13, Jesus talks about how we must be born again in the Holy Spirit. In John 3:8 Jesus says,

"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

I read a commentary on this on biblegateway.com that said that this means that God will direct the Holy Spirit and will send its influences where, and when, on whom, and in what measure and degree, He pleases.

This doesn't make sense because this implies that God doesn't give everyone an equal chance of gaining the Holy Spirit. So, I just wanted to know the correct interpretation of this passage.

Thanks and God bless.

...it seems like I've been posting up a bunch of questions on interpreting passages from the Bible. Does anyone know of a Bible or a book that has Coptic Orthodox interpretations on passages from the Bible?

Hey everybody,

The whole story of Adam and Eve and the garden of eden confuses me. What was the garden of eden? Was it paradise, heaven, or a garden on earth? Originally, I thought that it was part of earth because the Bible says that the Euphrates river runs through it. But, it doesn't make sense that it is on earth, because the tree of life is in the garden, and I thought the tree of life is in Paradise, because in Revelation 2:7, it says that the tree of life is in the midst of the Paradise of God. So, how can Paradise be on Earth? And if the garden is on earth, wouldn't there still be an angel gaurding the garden so no one will eat from the tree of life? Or, did God remove the tree of life from the garden? Also, if the garden is in Paradise, then how come the devil was able to go there, and why would God allow the devil to enter Paradise?
I'm just totally confused on this.

Thanks and God bless.

Hey everybody,

I was reading a passage from the Bible, Luke 13:10-17, and I don't know if I'm interpreting what Jesus said right. In this passage, Jesus healed a lady on the Sabbath. But, the leader of the synagogue said that no work is supposed to be done on the sabbath. So, Jesus says in verses 15-16,

"Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?"

I interpret this as Jesus not wanting us to be fundamentalist Christians. He doesn't want us to concentrate on every single detail, such as not working on the sabbath, and instead focus on our faith. If this is right, can this be applied to how we fast sometimes? Like we don't have to read the ingredients of every single food product to make sure it's fasting.

Thanks and God bless.

Ok sorry if the question seems somewhat obscure, or even stupid, but I was wondering is it a sin to want to be good at something? Not to brag to others about or to be recognized, but just to be good at something, if that makes sense. Sorry if the question seems a little weird or whatever, and thanks in advance for the answer.

Peace and Blessings,
WMA

Hey all, sorry if this topic offends anyone or anything. Sorry for being such a bother but this is just something that's been on my mind the past few days. When praying, specifically when praying for people, is it wrong to not go through everyone you know and only pray specifically for God to help 10-15 people and then to ask Him to also watch over and help everyone else [Sort of like a generlized prayer]? Sorry if the question seems silly, and thanks in advance.

Peace and Blessings,
WMA

hey everybody,
there are a couple things that i've been searching for in the Bible for a while now and I just can't seem to find them.

First, I don't understand what exactly happened to Jesus after He died on the cross. I know we all say He went down to hades and defeated satan and freed all the people that where there or something, but what exactly happened, and I can't seem to find where in the Bible it says this.

Second, where in the Bible does it say that a lady came up to Jesus while He was carrying His cross to Golgotha and wiped His face with a towel. In all the movies of Jesus that I watched, this scene was included. I asked my mom where it says in the Bible that this happened and she said it's not in the Bible. So where did people get this from?

Thanks and God bless.
