hello,
John 10:14-30

I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father." Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. And many of them said, "He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?" Others said, "These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?" Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon's porch. Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, "How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly." Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one."

I was very confused about this because at first, i thought it meant that he had departed and then when i kept reading a couple of chapters down, the Bible says that he ascended to heaven so i started doubting my interpretation!

Remember me always in your prayers.
-Your sister in Christ -

Not that I know much detail on the topic, but after reading some of the catholic doctrine on purgatory...it kind of makes sense on some levels... let me explain

"The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines purgatory as a "purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven," which is experienced by those "who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified" (CCC 1030). It notes that "this final purification of the elect . . . is entirely different from the punishment of the damned" (CCC 1031). " (As defined on catholic.com....http://catholic.com/library/Purgatory.asp)

I know we have all asked the question when we were younger to our parents or our sunday school teachers, "What happens if we don't confess a nanosecond before we die??" because we all know...

"The purification is necessary because, as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean will enter the presence of God in heaven" (Rev. 21:27)

And the usual response (atleast to me) is that if we were truly repentant then God will accept there repentence although they are still guilty without the need of confession and communion.

Now the catholic dogma seems to solve this problem apparent problem, but takes it a few steps further in defining which sins let gives you hope in purgatory (venial and mortal)....howeever if we removed this boundary line of sins, do you think the dogma can hold?

Basically what I am saying is that, we die in sins for sure no matter what....And nothing can enter heaven unclean...see the gap that a dogma similar to purgatory (but not exact to the catholic version) can fill?

This is just a thought that has been running around in my brain for some time now....thoughts any1?

hello every1,
i have a couple questions regarding the conversation that Peter had with the Lord Jesus Christ wen He was washing the desciples feet
John 13:6-10

6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”

-wat was Christ washing their feet from? sin?
-and y if He didnt wash his feet will he not have part in heaven? wats the symbolism?
- is there any reason in specific y it is washing the feet rather than any other part of the body besides showing Christs' humility?
-it also mentions that to be clean He only needs to wash his feet..wat is meant by this?

pls inform me of anything that needs clarification, thanx in advance

pls keep my weakness in ur prayers
-sister in Christ

My friends and I play this game, which is common and all, most people know it by playing it on the road when you can see the license plates, but anyway to the point which is you first start by choosing a category, such as saints or names of books in the Holy Bible, if you still don't understand the concept, hopefully you will when you get it later on!! For example, the category would be saints, so you name a saint like Abouna Youstos, and since the last letter of his name is S, you need to name a saint that starts with S like St. Stephen, and since the last letter of his name is N, you also need to start with N for the next saint like St. Nofer, let's start with St. Nofer, so the next saint starts with R, whoever wants to contribute and continue go right ahead, and if you want a new category you can start that too!!

Forever,
Coptic Servent

1 Then the LORD appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre,[a] as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, 3 and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. 4 Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.

-how did Abraham know that the 3 men was God (he called them Lord), these 3 men i think represent the trinity..the Father, Son ,and the Holy Spirit.( if the 3 men r not the trininty wat r they?) How did Abraham c the Father? i remember reading somewhere in the Bible that whoever sees the Father will die(sorry i dont have the exact verse right now)
-in verse 4 y does Abraham use "yourselves"(plural)? wasnt the 3 men the hypostasis of God representing ONE God?..

Genesis 18:10-14

10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”
(Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” 13 And the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD?

- y didnt God punish Sarah and Abraham for their disbelief in getting children as Elizabeth and Zachariah were?

pls inform me if something is unclear and needs clarification
thank u in advance

pls keep my weakness in ur prayers
-sister in Christ

hi.. i am a fellow copt who has been wondering about this question for a long time. I was taught in history class that when there was a separation between the western christianity and eastern orthodox christianity the main reason for this separation was their beliefs on the Divinity of God.. do we believe that Jesus was a human as well as God or do we believe that Jesus was only God?.. i always hear different answers from people....thank you so much.. and May God be with you all .... :)

Hi,

I have a few questions on Baptism that I really need answering:

a) What exactly was the baptism of John the Baptist?

If the Church baptism is one of purification and Justification, what was John baptising for?

b) Why did Christ need to be baptised for?

If John the Baptist's baptism was for repentance, why did Christ need this? Although there is the explanation: "we should be complete in all righteous deeds"; but why should He have been complete in this?

c) Baptism was not a jewish a feast. How is it then that the jews accepted or respected someone baptising them?? How was this seen by the jews??

d) John the Baptist said that "... one will come before me who will baptise you by the Holy Spirit & Fire". What does this mean??

       (i) How can we be baptised by fire? What is this fire for us??? What does this mean??
(ii) When did Christ actually baptise anyone?? We are baptised in the Church, but Christ Himself did not really baptise one person. If this is the case, then how is it our priests baptise?

Please excuse my english, if ANY of my questions were not clear, please let me know, and I'll try & rephrase them.

THank you,

Although some film stars subscribe to Scientology not too many ordinary folks do. The contrary is true for the JWs. They seem very modest people and their alternative take on many bible texts is intrigueing. I have read Pope Shenouda's writing about them but sometimes when I feel battered and depressed by the Orthodox jurisdiction troubles I look more kindly towards them.

One thing particularly bothers me, 'Verily I say unto you, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.' With a change in punctuation, 'Verily I say unto you this, thou shalt be with me in paradise' you get a partial confirmation of their doctrine of soul sleep, i.e. there is no conscious life for humans between death and the general resurrection. Bible concordances don't help much on this one and Orthodox teaching seems unclear.

What's the answer?

I was reading about Myron on this website and i found a statement thats kinda shocking... "Then the sanctification of the Myron was fulfilled in Alexandria, and Pope Athanasius was entrusted with the holy oil (leaven), which contained spices which touched the Lord’s body whilst in the tomb", " What is joyous and comforting, is that whoever is baptized, is anointed by the Myron which contains the spices which were laid on the body of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Are they saying what i think their saying? or is this a misunderstanding? The the Myron i recieved when baptised contained spices that actually touched Jesus's Body while in the tomb?

How do you explain to someone non-orthodox about certain things we believe in, such as confession, baptism, and intercession?

I know our job as coptic christians isn't to try to persuade others, but how would you explain these situations to a protestant, non-christian, etc.?

For example, I tried to talk about intercession of the saints with someone one time, and they counteract what I say : ex. I told them that we ask the saints to pray for us, then they say well how would they pray for you, they're dead... etc.

I guess what i am really trying to say is, how to defend your faith?
