“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.”
Hebrew 6:4-6

That passage sends shivers down my spine every time I read it. Does it mean what it sounds like? Can a good Christian sin and in so doing forfeit their salvation? Could the verse be talking about repeated sins like addictions or swearing where people do them over and over again and repeatedly damage their spiritual lives?

From what I've read, that's not supposed to be what it means, if so, are there any other verses that support a less literal meaning of the passage above, verses that affirm that God's mercy is limitless?

In short, the question is, is there anything that we can do on Earth that will stuff us up so bad that repentance is impossible even if we want it? To me that sounds like what the verse is suggeting but I don't think that's consistent with the rest of the Bible...

I'm interested to hear what people think about this...

God bless you all

Pray 4 me ;D

Hi ;)
Just the other day a lebanese friend of mine told me about this maronite saint called Charbel Makhlouf. He told me a few of the miracles by this saint, and that despite the fact that he died more than 100 years ago his body is still 100% preservd by god, to the extent that he still has blood in his body that sometimes seeps from his body as well as body sweat. Since my friend told me about this saint ive become very interested in him. I found these 2 sites (among the countless) that were about him! >

www.charbel.org/

www.marcharbel.com/

He was only a monk but made great things happen! It is for this reason that he seems (to me at least) as almost a lebanese version of baba Kyrillos! Anyway if any of you are interested do check out the above website! If anyone has already heard of St charbel i would be interested to know! ;) Ma salaama :)

Hi everyone!

These days, we are increasingly hearing stories such as the one below:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/4607406/Boy-of-13-becomes-a-father.html

Likewise, we read of all sorts of unimaginable, perverted acts taking place against children and even month-old infants. Its becoming a big bad world out there. Questionable acts involving "consenting adults" are increasingly take place around us. As a parent, I dread to think how the world has changed for the worse from the time we were kids in the 70s & 80s. Today, you hear of kids doing substance abuse, filming / sharing vulgar videos, getting into bad relationships and basically trying to prove something to their peers. How do we insulate our youngsters from going wayward and falling victim to these disturbing trends?

Unfortunately many people have a very casual "none of my business" attitude towards such incidents. Our sensitivity seems to have become numbed by the almost daily occurrence of such incidents. Only when somebody known to us is directly affected do we sit up and take notice.

How do we protect our kids and teens from falling prey, bombarded as they are, by lifestyles portrayed on TV, cinema, web access and even watching the general public. Being adults, we often get so absorbed watching TV or browsing the net, what to speak of kids. I seem to think that the following issues are responsible:

1. Parents prioritizing career and social life over family life causing lonely children to seek comfort and pleasure outside home.
2. Neglect of regular prayer life due to work pressure, distractions due to TV, internet, video games etc.
3. Poor communication and failure by some parents in disciplining their children and supervising their activity.
4. Rationalizing and condoning inappropriate behavior - Some parents actually close their eyes to their childrens' inappropriate dress sense, language, disrespect for elders etc. Today's "reality show" mania is actually playing a major role in conditioning our daily behavior.

In trying to figure out, it becomes somewhat apparent that the arrival of the information age coupled with higher earnings / disposable income is mostly responsible. Over the years, we can notice a gradual shift in our behavior and thought pattern- specifically after satellite TV, internet, video games, mobile phones became available.

Now we don't live like the Amish community that has resisted outside influence and retained their old way of life. Check this out...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish

I believe we must take drastic and sustained measures to counter this. I'd like us to discuss how we can cope with this flood of temptations and evil influences? This is a serious fight against the tide for the sake of our children.

God bless,
P

Hello my Coptic friends,
I hadn't used tasbeha.org forums for quite some while now and I was hoping for some Ershad (help) on a specific issue. I have a teacher at school, science teacher (you can see where I am going with this), she was a Christian, she claims that she stood up for science because she felt science had more backups and evidence than the bible. She is very affectionate towards the environment. She is always supportive towards causes like global warming, animal extinction, ext. But she always backups the evolution theory. I also believe in "evolving," but not to this extent: (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/Human-evolution.jpg)
I believe the fact that humans are loosing their wisdom teeth because we are consuming softer foods. I believe that diseases like the annual flu does "evolve" so that it fights our immune system by DNA exchanging information. I need a few facts, proven facts; I have some that should be convincing. I also need backups on a few before I tell her them. Like, I need to make sure that humans are turned into dust after death. I mean minerals found in dust. Most importantly I need a verse, or paragraph in the bible that commands us, from God, to care for the world he has given us. A list, with many controversies that science and the bible both agree upon would be even better.
God Bless John :P† † †

Suppose I have an assignment say for math or physics which I can do but another student needs help(or he can do it and I need help)

The professor says we can get help from each other but you can not copy the answers.

How much help is okay? Some places say discuissing the general themes and concepts.. some places for say these subjects or another subject says you can discuss approaches to solving the problems...

how much help can we get?
If we can figure out the way to solve the problem.. won't we most likely get the answer right? if we can tell each other the tricky thing about the problem.. sometimes the textbook and lectures are not good enough.

You can get help sometimes or all of the time as long as you reference that this idea was from so and so..

Hello,

How would the CoC view assisted suicides where a terminally ill man/woman wants to die rather than live in pain?

Personally, I feel it is wrong. Not because God gave us life, and we have no authority over it. (Yes, that is true however).

But for the following reason~: We will all go through old age, and with that is suffering. It seems that the only reason that people have assisted suicides is to ease the suffering of those of their immediate families who are taking care of them. But, this means that the carer feels the burden of taking care of the person in need of care than the love they have or receive from the existance of the person being cared for.

But how would the Church view such actions? Does such cases of suicide fall under the category of "unforgivable sin"?

Thanks

Hi,

I just wanted to know the official CoC view on Father Christmas, or Mr. Santa Claus. Did he really exist?

Was there really a saint in our Church that honestly dressed up in a red skirt and had raindeers to drive him around? I definately think the image is a charitable one, but where is this story in the Synaxar?

I don't mean to be a kill-joy nor am I anti-Santa. I remember I sent him many letters as a child, and I did get my Christmas wishes 90% of the time - but it was only to discover that it was my parents who were buying me the presents.

Surely this is not good for the faith of children is it?

Regardless - who is he? Was he a Coptic or Catholic saint or neither? Finally, if the answer is neither - why do we as christians talk about a saint that didnt exist?

I just wanted to post this and see if we all might have an interesting discussion….

1. What is forgiveness? Is forgiveness a conscious choice?
2. What are the benefits of forgiving?
3. Is there any limit to our willingness to forgive others?
4. Is there anywhere in the bible where it seems an act was unforgiven?
