The guy that does the Orban at church is a very nice man, I am very fond of him. The problem is that one day a few of us were talking. I mentioned that our group of writers is doing a book on scientific atheism, this particular individual and I began a long discussion about this. I was confused as to why he was taking the side of the atheists. He eventually divulged that he does not believe in God. While I love this man deeply and respect him, I do not believe for one second that he should be doing Orban. I mentioned this to a close friend and she said no, he does, and seemed confused that I would say that. So I talked with him again today and he plainly stated he does not believe God exists, and we had our usual debate. After which I told Abouna, and he got mad at me. He told me to watch what I say. I said that he told me he didnt believe in God and he said, why would he come to church then if he didnt believe in God, as if I know whats in that guys head.

First, do you think that he should be doing Orban? Second, why am I continually admonished for bringing these sort of issues to Abouna? Is that NOT relevant at all? It is frustrating, nothing I do or say is taken seriously, am I really that crazy?

"For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus." (1Tim 3:13)

I myself am an Anaghanostos, reader Deacon. The day that I was ordained was one of the greatest days of my life. I quickly came to the realization that many deacons do not see anything special about this rank, they take it for granted. We have some wonderful deacons at our church and I am very blessed to be able to learn from them, on the other hand many disgrace it.

There are three qualifications in a deacon:
1- to must be filled with the Holy Spirit and wise
2- to be ordained deacons, through the laying of hands and praying
3- to carry out specific responsibilities

Our teacher St. Paul mentioned some other qualifications in his first epistle to his disciple Timothy, chapter 3:

1- reverent 2- not double tongued
3- not given too much wine
4- not greedy for money
5- holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience
6- ruling their children and their own houses well
7- they should be tested first, and then, if they pass the test, they are to serve.

Our job as Reader Deacon, which is the rank most of us hold, is to read the daily chapters of the holy scripture, to learn and sing the hymns and especially to serve the priest and or bishop. We are to be an example to the people of the congregation, to be upstanding Christians, to teach and to preach, as well as learn from those above us.

What a wonderful thing to be a Deacon! To serve next to the body of Christ. St. Ignatius in his letter to the Trallians says that Deacons are the imitators of angelic powers. What an honor to be compared to the angels, to imitate them. As they sing, praise, and worship God, so too do we in the altar, gather around our Lord as the angels. This is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly, we are a rank serving in the heaven on earth, the divine liturgy.

There is no reason to serve as a Deacon of any rank if you are not able to maintain self control, pray daily, fast, and be a model Christian for the people. I am tired of seeing unworthy deacons and hearing of the horrible actions of deacons, we all make mistakes but living in the world and serving as a Deacon is unacceptable. Either take this blessing seriously or cease being a Deacon, so you do not continue to disgrace the rank.

God Bless.

Im not sure if you have come across this story yet or not, but it is about a young man called Mosab Hassan Youssef: The son of one of the founders of Hamas in the West Bank: Shiekh Hassan Youssef.

He was a muslim and became Christian.

His mandate is to expose the "Terrorist god" of the Koran.

Personally, I find what he says, even when he's not attacking the muslim god 'allah', spiritually very beneficial indeed.

He's amazing.

I think you should propagate these videos and his message.

He is not the 1st muslim to embrace Christianity - but I love what he says.

I would like to quote one part he is saying which I find really brilliant.

"... the World's problem is not with muslims... the majority of muslims are great and wonderful people, they are my people... when you go to the Middle East, you see their passion, you see their hospitality and you get confused, you say sometimes 'these muslims are better than many Christians'.

... we are not in a position to compare people. We are comparing ideologies, and I'm telling you that the most criminal muslim has a minimum of morality, responsibility, and logics MORE than his god.
"

Then he goes on to say, in other videos, (Im paraphrasing here) that the most dangerous muslims, are NOT the radical muslims who go around reciting verses from the Koran to kill the Kuffar and infidels; the most dangerous are the moderate muslims who hide or cover the reality or "ugly face" of their god. They are the dangerous ones because they are hiding the truth about their god, and showing another face of Islam that isn't true.

Can I please ask you all to distribute, through facebook links, through friends, through anywhere, his videos?? They are a powerful testimony to how our God can change someone, how He can lead to loving your enemies which IS the solution to not just the problems in the Middle East, but even to your own problems in life.

Now, compare Mosab's video with this Muslim girl who is part of the MSA:

This is the MOST shocking video I've ever seen on YouTube. LOOK at the hatred! HOW DARE SHE!! HOW DARE SHE!!
Muslims are invited to hate from their Quran. They cannot love their enemies, and their Koran has made the entire NON-Muslim world their enemy.

Please, for the sake of peace, distribute these links wherever you can. Thanks

Assurance of Salvation

You may be well aware that a lot (if not all) evangelicals, baptists, protestants etc say that they "are saved".

The Orthodox philosophy is not to say that "we are saved" but that "we are being saved". It takes the approach to salvation of an athelete who is running until the race is over. You cannot just give up.

However, their point is quite valid; and I think we have misunderstood them:

Their logic is this:

Christ's blood saved us. It was enough to pay the price for our sins - our current sins and our future sins. We stand justified before the Father. If we say we are "not sure if we are saved" then we doubt (according to their logic) that somehow our righteousness is needed for us to be saved.

Now - that's an interesting point. Isn't it? The more I struggle NOT to sin, despite my baptism, despite the death of the old man through my baptism, I STILL sin. Therefore, I will never be perfect. It doesn't mean I should stop trying, but it doesn't mean either that I should ever DOUBT that I am not saved because I have sinned.

There are sins that lead to death, and there are others that don't. You agree? And I think the sin that leads to death are the ones that you cannot repent over. But, if you repent over them, even if you fall 1000's afterwards, do you believe (AS ORTHODOX) that you are still saved? If there are sins you didnt repent/confess over (because your sins are SO countless and you forgot) are you still saved? Do you have this assurance??

One thing I noticed between us and them is that they live life with an "assurance" of their salvation. This means that they do not carry guilt about their sins. This is something, in my opinion, quite healthy. I noticed that many orthodox christians, and I guess Catholics too, have this guilt trip over their sins.

Although it is admirable that their repentance is on-going, if you have repented for your sins, why do you STILL repent if it has been forgiven? Why not live in the assurance of your salvation knowing that no matter how bad you are, God loves you so much that you are saved! You WILL NEVER be perfect. You will always fail, you will always sin. So, why the lack of assurity in the Orthodox mindset when it comes to the assurance of your own salvation.

I agree that we have a free will, and a frail nature which means, for some people, that if today I accept Christ, then tomorrow I could reject Him. I could very well, tomorrow, go off and start worshipping idols. That's true.

But the evangelicals are not talking about this when they exclaim that they are saved. To them, when they say they are "saved" they mean that they are "born again" - and this "rebirth" , for them, is something they don't deny.

Perhaps I've answered my own question, but it seems the ONLY condition that forfeits your salvation is if you doubt the sacrifice of Christ's life on the cross for you or if you refuse to repent for a sin.

Ultimately, would you agree that we still die sinful, even despite our baptism, and getting worried about EVERY single sin we do, as if our God is such a monster He's going to remember every single sin that we forget to confess about, we are STILL saved??

I just get the impression, from some Orthodox Christians, that if they sin, UNWILLINGLY, unwittingly, UNknowingly, UNintentionally, and they realise it afterwards, and repent for it, then they seem to think that their salvation is in jeopardy.

I agree - if you sin, knowingly, and you do not repent for it, INTENTIONALLY, then this is a problem. You, by your own actions, and WILL - are prefering your sin than Christ, which ultimately results in your perpetual death.

what do you all think?

Hi Everyone,

Do you think it would be possible to get our priests to introduce an Orthodox Chastity Program? I know in the states, they've done this silver ring thing, but I get the impression that our youth seem to think that Chastity is only for nuns or monks.

What is the best way we can communicate and express to our own youths the importance of sexual purity before marriage - and even after marriage?

I think the explanation is quite clear, but what is missing is the incentive, or unified effort amongst the youth to actually live in holiness.

Christ said to us that "we are the salt of the earth", and He goes on to say "... if the salt loses its flavour, then how will it be seasoned?"

We bring people to Christ by being the salt. The flavour we offer comes from our ability to witness to Christ in our own daily lives and this done by keeping His Commandments, of which fornication, adultary, and lust of the heart are included.

The Apostles, when they decided to baptise the gentiles, they were deeply concerned about them not being circumcised. However, after some thought, they came to the conclusion that they would only need to be baptised. They felt it would not be wise to burden these people with so much laws and traditions of the jews, but they gave them the ESSENTIALS on what to do. The main part of that was to AVOID SEXUAL IMMORALITY.

So, if we engage such behaviour as if it is nothing, then surely the salt has lost its flavour. If we change between wrong and right - surely the salt has lost its flavour.

I'm in no way interested in enforcing some kind of religious chastity police.. I'm far from perfect myself, but I am deeply concerned that what amounts to sexual immorality is not being seen as sexual immorality by our youth.

We can fall 100 times in this struggle, yet we must rise. However, if we say we are Christian, and do not recognise this as a sin, then it is at that point we become worthless. We have no flavour.

I think the reason of this apathy or disregard for God's commandments concerning chastity is as follows : or partly as follows for why our youth engage in such immoral behaviour:

* They think/assume that they will never marry a virgin, so why bother waiting for?

Our purity of heart, minds and bodies is what we have to offer to God. It is righteous to keep these pure, whether we marry a virgin, or not.

* They may feel that their parents are from Egypt, and these values are applicable to Egyptians - now they are in the "west", they have to integrate, and part of that is to do as the others do.

I accept that we are bombarded in the west by sexual material more than the west, and I am aware also that keeping sexually pure is not the easiest thing to do whilst living in western socieites. You're basically alienating yourself from everyone.

But this is a Christian Value and Characteristic. Its not Egyptian.

Finally, this brings me to the solution:

I think that is why we need a Chastity Program in our Church: The youth need to feel that they are NOT alone in this, and that what unites them together IS Christ's commandments , not Egypt, not Egyptian culture, and definately not Egyptian values.

I saw a video of a new government program/initiative aimed at addressing the problems of female circumcision. Part of that was that initiative was to get the women to sign Promises that they will NOT let their kids (female girls) get circumcised.

I think we need something similar. We need to make our youth united in this. This is also evangelising our faith at the same time.

I am a strong believer that rather than going out and telling others to repent, I am adament that it is best to focus on ourselves. Each and everyone's repentance and struggle from temptation and sin is IN ITSELF an evangelisation of their faith.

Is this idea possible??? Fr Peter???

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." -1 John 5:7 (KJV)

This verse may be the most controversial one in the entire Bible. It is said that no Greek manuscripts prior to the 16th or even 17th century contained anything past "For there are three that bear record in heaven," and that the original manuscripts did not contain the explicit reference to the Trinity. It is also very often used by atheists and Muslims to discredit the Bible. To support this idea, I've heard asked, "Why was this verse not used early on when the conflict concerning the nature of Christ was full-blown?"

So I ask:

a.) Was this verse used to defend the divinity of Christ during St. Athanasius' time?
b.) Are there translations of the Bible prior to the 16th century that contained the full reference to the Trinity?
c.) How would a confusion like this arise in the first place? If it were originally there, there should be no credible assertion that it wasn't. If it was not originally there, then there should have been some publicity and resistance when it was inserted. So how would this happen?
c.)

I had a rather unpleasant conversation the other day. The person I was conversing with must not have understood what I was trying to say. This person tried to tell me that I should concentrate on my salvation not on the Apocalypse. What confused me about this is that, aren't we supposed to be focused on His second coming? Is that not part of our salvation? It was very frustrating as she basically would not let me complete a sentence and kept confusing my words.

What do you think?

Hi,

I've been looking everywhere for a gym near where I live. I found one. The location is perfect. I could even walk there from either work or home.

Every other gym I've checked is either far away or ridiculously expensive.

I was reading a few things about this particular gym, and it turns out that it was a Roman Catholic Church called Notre Dame de L'Assomption.

I feel extremely bad about that!

What should I do?? I really need a gym, yet I find it quite insulting that it was a Church before.

What should I do? Is it morally wrong to go to this?? They even have a statue of Saint mary on the edifice of this gym.

"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Parallel this with Matthew 24:36 which says:

"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only."

Although this one isn't as straightforward, this one also seems to imply that the Son does not know the day. But this can't be, because

a.) The Father and the Son are one
b.) The Son will be the one coming back to judge the world.

So why is it that Christ would say that the Son does not know the day? The only explanation I've heard for it is that since Christ was both God and Human, at times He spoke as God and at times He spoke as a human. But if His divinity and His humanity never parted, then His divinity cannot know something that His humanity does not. Correct? Can anyone explain this?

I have been trying like heck to talk with this "pastor" that runs Red Letter Ministries named Brandon Barthrop. I have persued him on the net. I have called, sent letters, etc. And cannot get a response outside of something stupid like "Shika Boomba" or something to that effect. This brand of protestantism was made popular by John Crowder who brought in the drug culture, getting high with the Holy Spirit, etc.

Here are some videos to get you started on this stupidity. Denominations like this split from charismatic denominations like lakewood revival, whos pastor was just involved in a scandal. It really shows how protestantism reduces itself to the most base and simplest form.

Bear with me on these, some of these the guy literally does nothing but laugh and make noises for a couple minutes. But watch and be in awe with his teachings LOL.

[Moderated: Just not suitable for any of us to watch]

This next guy is a psychopath and actually dangerous like Jim Jones in my opinion. He teaches that everyone else is wrong except him. I have engaged him and he called me just about every name in the book, then proceeded to ban me from any sort of online discussion. I have not been able to get his personal information to send him a letter or call him yet. He thinks he is a jew. This is what St. John Chrysostom called "Judaizers" and you can see why he hated them so much.

Keep watching, he always snaps a minute or two into the videos.

[Moderated: Just not suitable for any of us to watch]

Forgive me for saying this, but I feel as if many Orthodox are lazy and seem to go to church for cultural reasons as opposed to spiritual necessity. I am not saying this is fact or that I can prove it. It is a mere observation, or my interpretation of what I see I guess.

For instance. I cannot seem to get people to do anything. Maybe my suggestions are too radical, that I understand, but my nature is to reach out. I want to spread Orthodoxy, to get it out there. I state my ideas or atleast the need to evangelize and it just goes unnoticed. There is an utter lack of structure and communication and it drives me insane, this is not just my church but according to many people I have discussed this with, but the church as a whole. Which is quite amazing actually, we have survived this long being so disorganized. It just seems as if we are doing what we can just to get by. I mean if no copts came here, there would not be a Coptic church in america.

This is my question tho, is what I am seeing true?
