In an exposition of the 6th hour Gospels (during Good Friday) St. Dionysius the Areopagite says that "through the Divine Providence of God, that he covered Himself in humanity, thus shielding His Divinity from the devil till he released Adam from his lordship and inherited Eternal Life"

St. Dionysius then goes on to explain, "that when she [St Mary] had fallen pregnant, Satan assumed it was due to Joseph and overlooked the saying of Isaiah, "behold, the virgin shall conceive & bear a Son and you shall call His name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14)"

I always thought satan was mindful of Christ's Divinity. ALL these prophecies are a clear give away. So was Satan aware that Jesus was the Son of God?

Christ is Risen!

I am not sure if this will be locked, but I'm ok either way, I wanted to wish you all a happy easter and send some thoughts I wrote on my blog, regarding holy thursday and the washing of the feet, aka the Laqqan prayers:

"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them."

I attended the Holy Thursday prayers at my church this morning and afternoon. It was a great time for reflection on the Lenten journey we have all gone through. Battling the inevitable hunger pains, we arrived at the "Laqqan" or blessing of the waters, where the water is blessed and prayed on, and then the priest symbollically washes the feet of the congregation by wetting a towel and putting the sign of the cross on the front of their lower legs. This of course comes from the gospel, where before the Passover, Jesus washes the feet of the disciples, leaving some offended at the notion of a great teacher humbling himself to such a menial task, but does so as an example of what it means to be a true servant, and how we are to treat each other. For some reason, I had this thought in my head: I wonder what it would be like if we as a congregation actually washed each others feet. That it wasn't the task of the priest to put a wet towel to our legs, but that we could actually wash the feet of our neighbors in the pews.

I could imagine the discomfort. Many people hide their feet, it is a very sensitive part of the body. Allowing someone to wash your feet is in a way letting them see a not so clean part of you. For some they would rather have their feet covered, rather than show the world what they look at. Others are self conscious, while, for the most part, unless you've spent a lot of time and money in pedicures and such, most likely, you would not be quick to put your bare feet in the hands of another person in church, let alone let them wash them. On the flip side, how many of us would want to take the bare foot of a congregation member into our hands? I wonder what kind of congregation we would be if we were the type of congregation that could wash each other's feet.

It's not about washing feet, though, but its exposing ourselves. It's allowing someone else to clean us, to acknowledge our shortcomings, and to take the dirt and wash it away. I'm sure we can have no problem doing this with strangers, but what about with people we know well, who maybe have hurt us or fallen short of what we wanted. Or maybe for some of us, we don't want to be seen. We don't want our dirt and our filth exposed to our neighbor, even in the church, even if he or she has dirt of their own. It's being in a very vulnerable position, and putting ourselves in the hands of our neighbor.

[Moderated]

These were some thoughts that affected me today. I hope after Lent, we can continue the dialogues out there on the net, in a better Spirit where we can follow that example given to us.

[Moderated to remove link to blog]

Have a safe and happy resurrection feast. Go easy on the meat, no point in breaking fast with laziness and indigestion. :) Pray for me

- M -

This is a very big topic and can apply to just about everything we do but my question today is specific to eating in church..

We are told from a young age to not drink or eat in church and we just accept that. To me personally I think it's a matter of respect because you wouldn't go in someone's house with your own food and eat it in front of them because it would be rude and would say a lot about your character. If we can eat, drink and do all that we do outside the church in the church, then how is it different? Is God not everywhere? Are we to starve ourselves permanently? Why is it that we only remember the Lord's presence in the church?

Also, if we aren't allowed food or drink in the church then how come we have a drink of water after taking the Blood in Holy Communion? If it's simply about washing down the Communion, why don't we just bring our favorite drink to church and drink that instead?

Hope the topic doesn't seem silly because it's an important thing to consider when we try to teach younger kids or non-orthodox people our church's rules and customs. If our reasoning is not based on something solid then it won't be respected and hence rejected.

God bless all and may the power of the Lord be with you this blessed Lent and all the days of your lives.

I don't know if this is the appropriate subforum but:

I'm planning to write a paper or a book on Orthodoxy and Politics (the political philosophy of Christianity).

Does anyone have any advice for me to look into, like books, church fathers on politics, certain Scripture verses, which might help in analysing the correct Orthodox political principles? Just say whatever comes up in your mind, where I should look in to.

I'm already looking into Romans 13 for example. And the Acts of the Apostles. And all of the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. And the stories about the Jewish people wanting kings in the OT, when all kings failed because the only just government comes from God.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There is this girl that I have known since sixth grade. She was very nice, organized, got good grades, was VERY smart and looked like a girl. I will say what I mean by that.

But she was my friend..........right up until seventh grade. In the beginning of seventh grade she became addicted to what is known as (rather what I call it) the "obsessive bomb" : The Twilight Series.

Every single day she wore one of those silly twilight shirts. EVERY DAY. I don't remember one day when she did not wore a black T-Shirt that says across it either twilight, new moon, eclipse, Jacob, Bella......you get the idea.

She became a total obsessive freak over Twilight. In eighth grade though, she laid her eyes upon a different obsessive toy: Tokio Hotel.
Which is a band full of homosexual men. She started wear all of their shirts. She started covering her eyes with black makeup soon enough, she has been giving herself eraser burns, cuts, and she became total emo.
Since 7th grade I have never seen her in a different color (or shade as a matter of fact) other than black.

She even drinks alcohol and she is 14.

Now, on the other hand, there is this other girl that I have known and she was so mean and she bullied everyone and she did a lot of bad stuff throughout middle school. But now she is in high school like me in the IB (International Baccalaureate) Program and she is much more nicer, calmer and wiser.

Now the question is: what causes changes in people?

Is it because Jesus entered one's life, or peer presser a a mixture of things.

So does that mean that anyone can change easily?

How can a christian or any person avoid change to the worse but instead change for the good and keep it that way??

Losing Trust in God

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone has been through this or not, but, have you ever lost trust in God?

Have you ever prayed for something and the outcome has made you lose your peace? And actually, before even praying for it, you couldn't really mind whichever option or outcome happened (i.e. either the door closed, or opened... you're not really insisting on a particular outcome).

Surely that would make you lose trust in God ? Just as much as someone could believe in God by praying for something and seeing it realized, the same applies for praying for something and seeing only bad things come from it.

I don't think this will make one atheist.. It just makes you dislike God. No?

Hey everyone, I have a few questions concerning my role in the church. I have some friends who do not believe that the communion is the true body and blood. Being raised in a protestant church but having been baptised in the orthodox church, they have been taught that the bread and wine does not become the true body and blood. Ive spoken to them on many occasion trying to explain to them why it is the true body and blood of our Lord and they always seem like near the end they finally get it, but the next time I talk to them its as if I said nothing at all.

The problem is, they continue to take the communion in the orthodox church. Not only that, but this is the great fast, in which none should partake of the communion unless you are fasting, well, there not fasting and there still taking communion. When I tell them they shouldn't be taking communion if there not fasting or dont even confess its the real body and blood they say I'm so strict and i'm judging them and how God is merciful and he wont "send you to hell" because your not fasting and you took communion. I really don't know what to tell them anymore.. Is it my responsibility to tell them to stop taking communion unless there fasting and believe its the true body and blood? Or is it okay that they continue doing as they do as long as they just "dont understand" and thus wont be judged for it.

Hello all,

In my continuing struggle to learn as much about the practice of Orthodoxy as I can, I recently purchased a small copy of the Agpeya. I try at least to do the morning and and night hours, but am having a lot of trouble in the morning. It's not that I am not awake or anything like that (though I could learn to embrace discipline and wake up earlier, that's for sure). Right now and for probably at least the next few months I live with my father, who is not at all Orthodox or respectful of the regiment I am trying to establish and stick to. He's not purposefully disrespectful, it's just not really possible to find any peace and quiet in the morning in which to focus on God and pray to Him. Like this morning, I got maybe 10-12 minutes into the morning prayers (through the first few lines of Psalm 50) before he started yelling things to me (nice things, you know..."good morning", "how'd you sleep?", but still yelling and being a distraction). I ignored him but eventually the noise of his shuffling around, coughing, typing on his computer, etc. crept into my thoughts and I started losing my concentration. I pretty much stopped after the introductory prayers.

I know that this is a me problem, not the fault of others, and I know that we've had other threads on concentration lately. What I am more interested in is how to (try to) create the proper atmosphere for prayer in a place where you can't have all the essentials. I recently listened to Dr. Mark Girguis' talk on obstacles in prayer (on orthodoxsermons.org) and the parts about creating the proper atmosphere for prayer, and the steps involved in approaching God and making a good prayer really concerned me. I can't just not pray, I know that well enough, but at the same time I also can't have a space dedicated only to prayer (I have a very small room, and while I do always pray pretty much always in the same spot, that's more out of necessity and it's not a place consecrated for that purpose). I also can't have icons or candles, and there is not enough physical space to prostrate. It is pretty much just the Bible, the Agbeya, the Liturgy of St. Basil, and me against the world of blaring rock'n'roll songs, TV, coughing fits, loud phone calls, yelling, etc.

What do I do here? How do I create a holy atmosphere in such an environment while still being respectful of the fact that I am a guest in another's house? I don't like 10-12 minute prayers, and I don't like opening the Agpeya (or anything intended to connect me to God) only to close it again without really doing anything. God deserves more than that from me, and I want to give Him my best.

I'm sure most of you have heard anti-Christian faith/validity arguments in which the seemingly outlandish, extreme, and unnecessary laws and punishments of the Old Testament are used as the central basis of the argument.

Aside from the argument that the bible is outdated and supposedly untrue, etc etc, people will often respond with an "oh that changed after Jesus" with the response "so the you don't believe in the Old Testament then?" which brings up a conundrum.

I could bring up a list of all the punishments and rules, but i feel that would be unnecessary.

So basically,
What do we have to say about those rules/punishments?
why are they void now?
some of them are so harsh and seem to be completely unnecessary, so why were they even put in place and enforced in the first place?

Im sure you all know what I am about to ask.. Im looking for a real theological explanation for this verse though, I dont want to here "it was his human side talking" we all know that, I want to know what EXACTLY he meant by this, everything our Lord says he has meaning behind it. We all know Jesus CHOSE to go up on the cross, it was his choice, but why do we see here that he prays to the father saying 'if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, never the less, not as I will, but as thou wilt'.

I guess you can say, he meant it was the will of God that he took flesh and allowed himself to be put on the cross for the sake of mankind, but it there a more theological explanation for this?
