I am disillusioned. I really have gotten to the point where I just want to give up. I cannot stand the fact that I fought so hard to get to "the truth" and it is rapidly becoming untruth. Now I am questioning everything and to be frank, I am tired. I am tired of speaking and not being heard. Have your church in whatever way you guys want it. You want protestantism? Go ahead I don't really care anymore, I am tired of fighting hard headed irrational fools.

I was wondering If we can start posting inspiring quotes from the fathers regarding fasting or the gospel's throughout Lent. The point is so that we can learn and benefit from the wisdom of the fathers and learn to apply it in our fast. Since I created this thread, I will initiate the first quote:

"Even the cross itself was but an expression of an existing reality, since Christ had crucified Himself for the world before the world crucified Him.... In Lent we prepare ourselves for the Last Supper. We prepare for two like things coming together. How could those who do not sacrifice themselves be worthy of Him who sacrificed His life? If we eat of a sacrificed body and do not sacrifice our own selves, how can we claim that a union takes place? The Mystical Supper on Thursday, which is the intentional acceptance of a life of sacrifice, is but a preparation for accepting sufferings openly, even unto death." [Fr. Matthew the Poor]

I do not know yet how to serve God completely but if I did would you forsake all to follow Jesus with me?
Jesus commands you to forsake your parents for your spouse and He likewise asks the same from us. Will you forsake all for His sake?

If you knew you must serve God in some way but it means to spend less time with mum and dad and not go to them because you fear losing them without spending time with them would you do so?

This is a great commandment

If however what you do does not edify and build you up you ought to spend time with mum and dad, but if you are spending your time to make money through which you may serve God or some other way to serve God this should come first and you should not think about mum and dad.

I know one poster has said she is leaving her house and her mum is upset about her lost animal. I think this is good as long as you are doing something important but you must not leave her if she is getting sick or she is really lonely and you are already well established

If you do not forsake them you will just destroy your life in all areas

I was so disturbed not knowing how to prioritise my time yesterday but I think I came up with this solution today in the morning. I hope it was God who pitied me

I normally do not ask for help for this personal issue, which is that I am always lacking motivation to excel in my studies. I do the bare minimum which is why I get average grades and I take longer to complete anything.

I feel like it is torture to study hard. When it is 10 pm at night I say what am I going to do with this few time and how will I sleep so I end up ignoring study and doing something else more fun.
I feel if I study hard I get no reward and why should I always be a slave? I want to be converting the world for God, and make this world a happy place to live in where I also get love and respect

The bible says he who excels in his work will not stand before unknown men

I can not describe what torture it is to study most of the day to just go to sleep and not be permitted to dream about anything but that I have more study to do tommorow and possibly more of the devil's wars and that when I work I also will have to think about work yet never being valued as a person as someone desired to be welcomed in their group with their activities

If I do two hours every night of study that will equal 12 hours of study in the week excluding sunday, which probably covers 2 subjects already. So if I get that kind of break also in uni it will all add up. I just do not want to be a slave

When I am studying I also get the urge to pray and read the bible

what is the reward for hard work?

I tell myself if I work hard God will see it and bless me for it by somehow bringing good things to pass, but what if He doesn't? what if He just wants me to go to church with most of my spare time and try to be the spiritual body guard or rather savior of all who go there even though I know all my efforts will probably not help bring any soul to God's kingdom, because people especially hate to be told what to do and Jesus is after people who have rock solid relationships with Him and wants disciples who will do His will even when noone is watching? and since I do not even have a balanced life myself to be able to help anyone?

I always think about how I am not good enough to most people I encounter for them to stop by and welcome me to grow through their activities

Sorry for bothering you with this post

Sorry to trouble you even more but I am getting the feeling that this post is from the devil because it causes people to pity me and think I am cool for not studying alot and still passing and other worse things which may be better not to be mentioned done by bad people

My main problem which I was going to forget to talk about and the reason for my post is why am I not happy to sacrifice myself for Christ or anyone else? why do I hate hard work? why does God want me to go through this suffering with no rest?

Because I find it hard to focus and feel like my life is being consumed when I am studying I run around my room and jump and punch myself like a little child

Giving money to the poor is good but if you are only providing for their basic needs like Food, Clothing, Shelter you are forcing your beliefs on them, telling them you should be happy with this and not ask for more. You should be content with an amount but if you feel you are being neglected in one area of your life you should try to fix that, like your social life. Perhaps you should ask a rich person if you can borrow his things like a game or what not if they are not using it.
The problem is that very action of asking to borrow some people think it is base and some wicked people use it as a reason to look down on people and consider them worthless

I know it is very important to build your own house first but I think perhaps more needs to be done if you can spare a few dollars. I am not going to force people to give more than they are able, they should not, but if you can help some people be happy and prosperous, helping those in distress it will be a good deed. Especially a child of God, a believer should not be abused and trampled upon because of His kindness
When Jesus said "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you" is it true? can we pursue our own career and God will provide for us, can we give our tithe and God will pour out the windows of heaven?
Can God send His angels into the world to give money to those in need without us.
I for one will not use that as an excuse to not giving money to those in need and those who have a right for the unrighteous mammon. Making friends by unrighteous mammon is God's will and is necessary to enter the kingdom. Besides I don't know if God would send His angels or handiwork into the world.
I am completely against sinners wasting the goods of the poor of God's people and feeling the need to give alot of your money to go to heaven and lack of discretion

But I guess atheists now know their need for God in this world
God out of His goodness has kept you alive but He can take you whenever He wants like the rich fool who stored up his riches and in his barn

I know I have not refined my post and just spoke in a raw way saying whatever comes to my head but this really bothers me

If you know a rich friend who has this worlds goods you should ask him if he is willing to share. Thou shall not trespass on his privacy though unless you have the authority
We need to follow the laws of the land except for when we are in desperate need and it is understandable and deserves pity
Love will cover a multitude of sins and he who has no sin let him throw a stone first
Arise O LORD now is the time to protect Zion

I do not feel like forcing myself to go when I do not see the point and I am busy. I do not believe I need to go to church every week to go to heaven. This is why I am not going to church tommorow. When I drive I will go more likely
(I got into a non injurious car accident)
And I feel possibly people in church feel like I am extremist for going every week or they think I am crazy trying to change the world, so I am not going.
I do not like having feelings of low self esteem when I see others talking alot and I can not, so I do not want to go.
How to preach the gospel

I think we all agree that we do not know how God will judge the world and how He will judge particular people
there was a sermon by Fr Bishoy Andrawes (I am talking about Father Anthony's blessed partner), sorry to disrespect your service Father but you said a fisher of men gives different bait to all people. Many things people say like that confuse me what they mean but how I interpret it I agree

Now since we do not know what God will do to each soul but we all believe Jesus is LORD
I believe we should use the bible as our reference

The bible can make people believe in three possibilities which different people believe in one to the exclusion of others.
They are God will save the whole world, God will damn a soul for all ages which deserves it, and God will perish the wicked after punishing them

The concept that God will damn a soul for all ages is not a foolish idea with no grounds but we are not to desire this if it is not just.
It is based on the fact that those jewish pharisees saw Jesus crucified on a cross and still did not pity Him. When Jesus said Father Forgive them for they know not what they do
His salvation is offered to all of them yet Jesus called them children of the devil and the wicked one. They stayed not repenting even till their last breath when they were on earth because they wanted to steal the Fathers inheritance even though they knew he was the Christ because God reminded them through the psalms and all His works when He said "My God, My God why have You forsaken Me"
Salvation will still be offered to many souls after death is a possibility because Jesus says "And I if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all peoples to Myself"
So even if they could repent after they die they would be accepted but God knew their impenintent heart that they really are children of the wicked one and will never repent
So when Jesus says "They will not get out of there until they have payed the last penny" it is true. But some will never pay that last penny it seems for God knew them

Also it is said "What shall it profit the man if he gains the whole world and is himself destroyed OR LOST
He was referring to devils

Why He said "Forgive them for they know not what they do" Is because He knew some of them do not know what they do and will be converted in this life or the next as He says
"Tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you"

It is not enough for them to be received after that they are punished for their sins they must repent on their own.
"Unless you repent you will all likewise perish"

One reason I want to make this post is the complete mess people have made about christianity that God sends people to hell who do not deserve it, and they say they know so and so is in hell because they saw a vision
I do not feel comfortable holding this doctrine of our Heavenly Father and I would have crucified christ myself if He said that.

Christ desires all men to come to Him and to search the deep things of God is required from all people. Unfortunately it may be required for us to preach the gospel to be saved for the law and the prophets command to love the stranger and accept him. We perhaps should preach it not out of fear of going to hell but because it will make God happy to reconcile them to Himself. He wants to be merciful and only a fool things His judgements are tolerable

Now I do not believe that any church is perfect, though I believed mine was but my church people are not all open to going into the depths of the bible. Though they may be right they do not really preach the gospel and are not a civilised people sorry, because they do not even want to preach the gospel. You do not need to preach the gospel if you really do not think it is good news but you must really hope that all the innocent souls are saved.

Now I will turn my attention to the catholics. The catholics are completely wrong about Papal infallibility on matters of doctrine and that all must be under him. They are also wrong about indulgences and all the miracles are false. The visions made by their saints are hoaxes such as fatima and lourdes. They are also wrong about Peter being the head and through him there is no salvation when they quote "On this rock I will build my church" The orthodox are also wrong about St Mary apparition in Zeiuton possibly
some of them even pray to the saints unlike us and other stuff. They also do not preach the gospel enough and correctly and it is required for them if they want to preach the gospel to live a holy life. How can they say the pope is infallible when 96 percent of catholics use contraception and this is a matter of doctrine! I am not connecting this with living a holy life but it by chance seems connected. I should have said this in a more respectful manner and there is a slight chance that those miracles are true. When all the christians are doing God's will God will give us a true miracle PERHAPS

The basis of preaching the gospel is that "Noone is good but One, that is God"
and He does what He sees is best

A fisher of men will give hope to all. God has left it until now that He has not declared what He will do because He is giving everyone the chance for salvation but the bible even gives the hope of SALVATION FOR ALL

God may see it good that those who would never choose righteousness and chastity on their own instead of sin for them to perish or be lost
God has not told us

I do not know if I or God loves sinners enough who continue so without seeking reconciliation with God and doing good in this life, maybe there is the chance they will perish

My mum does not know anything about my posts right now. It is 1:00 am where I live
Well I was feeling happy that I have more plans about going to church or doing other things and I felt more at peace

But the thing is my mum said very disturbingly for me to go to sleep. I feel she is stopping me from figuring out my salvation. If I asked her why are you talking to me in such a manner she will say she did not. She is just letting me know it is 1:00 am and I have to go to sleep.

This is like when I read the bible. And my parents or other people interfere with my reading or tell me to do something else.

There is always someone annoying me. Next time it could be you when I am at church. I could be planning to do good but you are hindering me. It can even be a priest. I am not talking about him trying to make me balanced. I listen to his advice and am not disturbed by his advice. I just know they may behave the same way

I read a sermon a long time ago by George Whitefield

http://www.biblebb.com/files/whitefield/gw025.htm

The wise virgins are often criticised of being too religious and are criticised by them in the world. I know he is protestant but it is a good message and none of my posts are influenced by protestants but the bible.

Its not that it is 1:00 am. I have felt it at other times a long time ago when I was more religious. When I feel I am growing they tell me to come down and spend time with them

If other nations and people who inherited other ideologies have to resist their parents will to be saved then we must do the same to be saved. This is often the focus of pope shenouda's books.

The Good News of the gospel is no matter what state you are in, today you can be saved.
This may seem a protestant term but it is found in the bible, according to His mercy He saved us
This means we are being saved all those who truly came to Jesus because they wanted a new life and really became remorseful of their state and not because it is popular (and will give you the best of both worrds) will be in the process of regeneration and God is conforming us to the likeness of His Son

When you make Jesus your LORD and Saviour, He will turn you into a vessel of the Holy Spirit, you will always seek to grow and you will not often have the feeling of returning to Sin.

There is danger that if you do not accept Jesus Christ today to save you from your sins you will perish or be lost. If you are alive tommorow you will still be given that chance of salvation. But if you delay you may not be saved.

The very fact that God is merciful is why His anger will be very great towards them who disrespected the sacrifice of Christ. And the ruin of that house will be great. The wicked will be turned into hell and all the nations which forget God.
"The Wicked will be as a fiery oven in the time of His anger"

The bible says My People will never be put to shame.

"Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame"

"He is the author and finisher of our Faith" "And He which begun a good work in you will complete it till the day of Jesus Christ"

He don't want us to be very afraid of death. Rejoice in the LORD with trembling

He releases all them who through fear of death were in bondage.

All those people who are afraid of death are sick people, myself included. Because those who are living righteously should have hope in God.
Let the righteous rejoice

I believe that God is good to us in the measure that we are good to Him.
Yes God is kind to the unthankful and evil and He is merciful, there is a limit to how bad things will happen to someone
But it is true that if you are good God will rewarded you in this life. This has not been abolished because we are in the new testament. I know Abouna Anthony yes a blessed man and full of wisdom says we should not connect the blessings of God to how we behave because God is good always. I will also remind you that Pope Shenouda says God does not punish for every sin but in the midst of a 100 sins He punishes for one of them.
I really find bad things happen to me when I do a sin, sometimes it is cause and effect and sometimes it is directly by God.

Someone already said that if you go to church and seek first the kingdom then God will bless the rest of your week.

The Psalmist says "Do good O LORD to them which are good"
and Blessed is the man which walketh not in the way of the ungodly . he prospers in all things like Joseph and the palm tree
I am not saving you from evil by this post. I can not do this. But just fixing some peoples understanding.

It is perhaps true though that there is great good coming from evil also. The evil comes first but the good overwhelms the evil.

Indeed though it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven and it is better than to have no hand than have your whole body cast into hell fire. God smites them which He loves (ofcourse not talking about the rich person) and chastens a son whom He receives. A poor person is rich in faith and wisdom and therefore has the advantage of entering the kingdom. Also because less is required of him. However the kingdom of heaven can also be attained easily by a rich man but he must take time to uproot the weeds and make a bit more effort. The judgements of the LORD are above man but He judges fairly and is good to all
Them which are rich must bring joy to them which have need like Job brought joy to many

So why is it that some people do not get chastened? it is because they have not asked the LORD to be their LORD and have put the day of judgement far from their eyes. He does not chasten those He destroys them
What shalll it profit a man if he gains the whole world and is himself destroyed or lost?

The greatest sin is pride though and is the cause of the greatest calamities like when david numbered the children of israel and those which rise up to bless their rich friends in a moral way will be accursed. It is right to honor all people

God is a rich father in heaven and he wants to share His riches with us if we are so willing to make Him LORD

I often stop myself from posting but I don't know if it is right to stop talking. I may have said some wrong things and rambled but what do you think? Does not the bible say that you all should edify one another?

Whoever has evil thoughts towards the poor and judges the reason for their calamities is sinning and is in the wrong way such as when the disciples asked about the blind man

That which I told you in the dark speak in the light

I should have asked this question last week but I think it is important to discuss.

I want poll of everyone's understanding of Coptic Orthodoxy relating to Jonah.

Why is Jonah called a prophet?

I know the answer but I want to see what everyone else will say. After I will discuss the Orthodox understanding of Jonah and why it is important for us to discuss it.

PS: If your answer is "Just as Jonah was physically in the belly of the whale/fish/earth for three days and three nights so Christ was in the tomb for three days and three nights." - If this is your answer, then it is wrong.

PPS: I'll give you a hint. The answer is in the first verse of Jonah's doxology. But if you're relying on the Arabic or English translation, you'll end up with the same wrong answer above. The answer is in the Greek/Coptic.

In the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve were told that they will return to the ground - to the dust from which they were taken - and that they are dust.

1) Why did the Lord not make mention in these introductory scriptures to Adam's immortal soul -that it would enter Hades when the body returns to dust.

These introductory verses in holy scripture sound to some sects as though they are saying that Adam is nothing but dust returning to dust without mentioning the second nature- the immortal soul of man that lives on after death.

When God personally breathed into Adam's nostrils the breath of life and made Him in His own image and likeness this is understood by most to imply that something immortal from God is also present in Adam. However when Adam sinned it was only mentioned that he was dust without mention of what happens to his spirit or consciousness after he became dust. Why?

2) Also, the scriptures say that man became a living soul. But I think this simply means a living being such that the word soul in this verse may not necessarily referring to the immortal spirit of humans. Is this correct?

3) When Abel was murdered, the scriptures say that his blood cried out to God from the ground. Is this metaphorical? Does this blood crying out have anything to do with Abel in Hades? Why is the abode of the dead or Hades not mentioned in these introductory chapters?

I was asked by a Chalcedonian Orthodox why we are not willing to affirm two wills in Christ. They insist that the wills and the minds (nous) of Christ are not synonymous with the Person or Hypostasis of Christ but are properties of the two natures. They have very precise definitions for what peoperties belong to the natures and what belong to the hypostasis.

My initial thought were that the two wills, divine and human are hylostatically united into a Mia-will in accordance with Miaphysite Christology. However in Chalcedonian Christology they perceive this as somewhat Apolinarian such that we are confusing mind and will with the person or hypostasis. In their Christology, the two minds and wills belong to the Natures of Christ and the one Hypostasis or person of the Logos Incarate makes USE of the two natures. The one Hypostasis uses the human will and divine will in perfect harmony and the human mind and divine mind in perfect harmony but the two wills are still there and according to them Orthodoxy DEMANDS faith in the two wills for the following reason:

The Three Persons of the Holy Trinity have one will not three since the Three Persons are One God.

As the will of the Holy Trinity belongs to the One God, it follows that thw will belongs to the Divine Nature or Essence sine the Trinity is One Divine Essence in three Persons.

If we say that the will of Christ belongs to His own hypostasis as opposed to the Divine Nature, then it follows that we are affirming three wills belonging to each hypostasis of the Holy Trinity, which might amount to saying that their are three Gods. As this would be a heresy, it is absolutely essential that we say that the will of God belonfs to the Divine Nature of the Holy Trinity.

Therefore when the Hypostasis of the Logos became incarnate, the Divine will still belonged to the divine nature and the human will still belonged to the human nature.

How would we as Copts/ non-Chalcedonians respond to this?

Do we affirm one Divine-Human Mia-Will and one Divine-Human Mia-Mind/ nous in Christ?

This Might offend people and I am really sorry but I want to know if my actions of dealing with heterodox people can cause them to not accept Christ and become part of our church if it was necessary. I know repentance is always possible for me when I am alive but what if people would prefer that we visited their convenience store less and visited the pub less. What if they would have come to Christ. Should I then become a monk? But even when being a monk visitors come and interrupt your prayers and then u can't do any preaching

You may not understand what I am trying to say and judge me
I am saying is there anything I can do which causes people to stumble and causes them to be lost? while I myself am saved when I realise my error can I be saved from being responsible of others perish while I continue living in the world to the max and be saved from blood guiltiness if I enter a strip club and then repent am I responsible for others being eternally lost? Even though I have not?

Why would I want to be saved if others are lost because of me?

Is there anything we should not do if we want to bring others to Christ?
what should we done to bring others to Christ?
is it God's will to not live in the world with people
Am I absolved from all actions while living in the world?

We humbly recognize that our Churches are not able to give more perfect witness to this new life in Christ because of existing divisions which have behind them centuries of difficult history. In fact, since the year 451 A.D., theological differences, nourished and widened by non-theological factors, have sprung up. These differences cannot be ignored. In spite of them, however, weare rediscovering ourselves as Churches witha common inheritance and are reaching out with determination and confidence in the Lord to achieve the fullness and perfection of that unity which is His gift.
