It really seems to bother me when their are really young children in the altar, i know their obviously their to learn but im talking about the ones that are like 5 years old and all they do is talk IN the altar. Just today when i was at mass their were 2 boys in the altar and were playing around when we starting doing the "great one another with a holy kiss" and theyre really loud. I cant even count how many time abouna actually stopped and waiting for someone to keep them quite or take them out of the altar.. Last sunday one of them got tired and sat down in the altar not long before we were about to start the communion.

I understand that they are just children and i dont blame them at ALL, but what upsets me is that most of the time, or even all of the time none of the older people do anything about it.. In my personal opinion kids who go in the altar and play around shouldnt be allowed in the altar untill they reach a certain maturity level. Because at the same time another 5 year old boy was in the alter quite the whole time which was perfect, meanwhile others are in their playing and laughing while the mass is going on.

Again i know their just kids but this is the altar. the THRONE of God.. shouldnt we take it a bit more seriousely?

Was there a council or something? I think are church does canonize them (correct me if i'm wrong). But this opens up a huge debate: how can we as Coptic Christians be reading an incomplete Bible- are we not then receiving the full, complete word of God? I understand that due to lack of resources in our church that we cannot publish a complete set, but isn't it important that we get the full word of God?! I'm finding it hard to believe there have been no talks or explanations about this topic, by our Bishops etc.

or am I missing something?

joe

Greetings everyone. In a couple days I have to give a presentation in my US Gov't class on the topic of capital punishment, both sides, and my own personal view. I have been until now against capital punishment, however, I would like to know, where does the church stand on this issue? I've heard two positions about this. One is the church is against it for who are we to take away a God-given life, especially when if imprisoned, one can repent and change his ways? The other position is, God told us we are subject to government and civil law, and the government has the right to kill those who have killed before.

So my question is, does our church have an actual position on capital punishment, and do the other churches, Orthodox (oriental and eastern) and the Catholics concur?

I would also like to hear people's own personal views if they'd like to share. Thank you.

I am getting so sick of these stupid western bibles with wrong translations and so many more issues. Just as someone said on CopticHymns.net, I bought 50 bibles throughout the last year but they are useless and just sitting on my bookshelf. I too have the same problem. Do you guys think we could start a petition for a bishop in england, australia or america to translate a bible into english? Also possibly the same bishop gather commentaries from church fathers and put it on the corresponding page in the bible? Even Possibly write his own explanations and put them on the corresponding page?

I heard about the new Orthodox Study Bible which came out this month (Febuary 2008), but I heard already from the people who got about things which are very wrong and againist our beliefs. Nobody is as close to the coptic church as the Eastern Orthodox. Clearly that bible is better than the New King James version because that's by protestants but still it's not the greatest. I ordered my version and i almost regret it. So what do you guys think? Possibly ask Anba David, Anba Youssef, Anba Angelos, Anba Sorial, even possibly Anba Daniel?? I really think it's something we need and it's a huge disadvantage not to have our own translation of the bible.

Okay everyone, i just recently made a topic on kids in the altar but i think this next topic in my church is just WRONG, and its the preists fault. There are 4 priests at my church and NONE of them can see the problem with this and I can see that its incredibly wrong and i know many others see and cant even believe wut the priests are doing...

Okay so in my church there are 2 altars, the one in the middle, and theres one on the left side that is where the male deacons usually change if the mass thats taking place is on the middle altar. On sundays their is a morning mass and a mass that follows right after.. the one in the morning starts at 7 and ends at aproximately 9:45 to 10:00 than immediatly after the second mass begins, the one with the middle altar.... The way it works out is one priest will come in for the early mass and when its time for communion the second priest will come in and give out the blood while the first priest is giving out the body so that its faster...

Heres the problem... You know how when mass is over the priest talks about certain things like upcoming events in the church, or like trips to like egypt or w.e.... The oldest priest in our church Made a new rule... and that is BEFORE THE MASS IS COMPLETELY OVER HE WILL START TALKING..... what i mean by this is when the first priest has finished giving out communion and takes the body back to the altar, you know how the priests finished the body and blood himself or uses the deacons so help him finish every little bit... BEFORE HE IS DONE doing this the nex preists goes out and all the hymns stop and he starts talking about upcoming events and church info WHILE the priest in the altar is still NOT FINISHED EATING AND DRINKING THE BODY AND BLOOD... which means that their is still some of the body and blood that has not been consumed while the other priest stops the deacons from singing w.e song they may be singing and starts talking about how the church is going on this trip or wuts happening nex sunday or w.e, and the reason their doing this is so that they can start the next mass right away..... Isnt this completely wrong??? I mean the first time i saw this i couldnt believe it and i dont see how the priests are all fine with it... THE BODY AND BLOOD OF JESUS IS STILL PRESENT and there talking about church trips and how church day care or w.e.......is it just me or does anyone see that this is not right???

- Hello, i'm new here. I am Roman Catholic, recently i've been discussing various issues with a Coptic Catholic friend of mine. The differences are enormous, but i'm running into problems. I've done my homework can see how the Church of Rome wavered, but am short answers. I am having a hard time nailing down adament Coptic beliefs. As a semi-Roman Catholic I can tell you that we believe in Purgatory because of how we define salvation, and when it is attained. More elaboratly we believe salvation is not attained until after the works based judgment, because there are venial and mortal sins and salvation isn't attained until after death, Purgatory makes perfect sense. I realize that Coptics do not believe in Purgatory, but does this mean they believe in imputed justification, does it mean that regardless of what state of sin we die in we are saved like the Protestants, what happens if we die with un-deadly sin? I can't find how Coptics define salvation, justification, sanctification and various doctrines. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I'm Ethiopian Orthodox.

I'm reading up on calendar issues on the Orthodox Church, and I'm having a hard time getting a definitive answer on exactly why we (Coptic and Ethiopian) celebrate Christmas on 28 Koiak (Tahesas in Amharic-Ethiopia) following a leap year, rather than the usual 29 Koiak. Why don't we always stick to 29 Koiak, even though after a leap year, it would be equivalent to January 8 Gregorian Calendar instead of the usual January 7? Note, I'm not asking about Julian and Coptic vs. Gregorian, but specifically about why we change the date of Christmas according to our calendar every four years.

I've heard the following reasons:

1. To celebrate on the same day as other old calendarists, which is always January 7.
2. Because the official holiday in Egypt is January 7 and doesn't change to January 8 every four years.

What's the official reason according to the Synod? Anyone have references?

Thanks very much.
