I know there is a monastery in Texas but I can't find it online--I'm pretty sure it's Coptic Orthodox but all I can find is Greek Orthodox...
Has anyone visited it? How was it? Can anyone find info on the internet??

Hey all,

a friend of mine recently drew my attention to this article; http://jehovah.to/exe/translation/coptic.pdf
It's a Jehovah's Witness article that attacks Orthodox doctrine by looking at the translation of John's Gospel, and this is obviously a big problem. This is well above my understanding of the language, so I'm wondering if anyone here is able to take a look at this and explain it. I'm sorry if this has been seen before and I'm just very slow, but it's the first time I've seen it :P

Hey everyone,

So at our church, St. Mark's in Chicago, we have this Friday Night Youth days, and each kid does a lesson and teaches it. Our series is tasbeha and we were talking about tasbeha and questions came up and the teacher could not answer them.

So here they are...

1.) Why do we say Amen Alleluia Kyrie Eleyson Kyrie Eleyson Kyrie Eleyson before every hoos?

2.) Why is the first hoos the Song of Moses and not a different song, story, etc?

Are Catholics Going to Heaven?

Hi,

I'm hoping for Fr. Peter to answer this, as I'd like the view of the CoC.

If other christian denominations do not have our baptism, and are required to be re-baptised when becoming Orthodox, does that mean that their current baptism is not valid in God's eyes? Would they therefore be in risk of not going to heaven because they were not baptised in the "Orthodox" Church?

Also, I'd like to know:

a) If we do not (as a Church) acknowledge the Catholic marriage - then does the CoC see all marriages outside of its Church as adultary? For example - if a Coptic married a catholic in the Catholic Church, the Coptic Church does not recognise this marriage. In fact, it would be to the extent that the Coptic man/woman who married in the Catholic Church, would not be allowed to have communion because they are living in "sin".

So, does the CoC see all Catholic marriages as people living in adultary until they all decide to get married in the CoC?

b) If catholics are going to heaven, where Coptic saints are and where the Coptic Righteous are going, then does that mean that the division between us is irrelevant?

I have more questions concerning this issue, but please let me know what you thoughts are on this.

I know that Islam started in about the 6th/7th century AD, but recently I heard that in the early 1900's, Egypt was predominantly Christian. Only recently did Islam become so dominant. Is this true? Is the same true for the middle east? Please tell me your sources. (Parents are not always the best source, by the way.)

I grew up understanding that sex is completely forbidden during the fast for all married couples. Recently I heard on another post that this is not the case; it's just recomended. Is that so? Only conservative coptic answers please, I'm from the west.

I am unmarried, but have two children with my partner of 9 years (oldest being 4)

My RC Priest did not have a problem with this when it came to Baptising my children, but would this stop me from converting to Coptic

Given that we are a monotheistic faith, how do we understand the meaning of the honorific title, "God of gods" occurring in Deuteronomy 10:17, Joshua 22:22, Psalm 136:2, and Daniel 2:47 & 11:36?

I encourage anyone who is interested in adding AghapyTV but not the other Arabic channels to complain to Dish Network and hopefully they will change this requirement.

I tried to call and add the AghapyTV channel for $4.99 however I was told that I need to add a $27.99 arabic plan in addition just to have this one channel. I object to this arrangement on the following grounds:

- I object to the content on the other arabic channels included in the Arabic packages due to fundamentalist religious teachings.
- It does not make financial sense for me to pay $27.99 + $4.99 just to get the one channel I am interested in.

Please escalate this to the person in charge of programming. I know of thousands more people interested in adding this channel but will not do so because of this limitation. If you wish, I can start gathering a list of names for a petition.

Greetings everyone, I have a quick question. I know the rites of the wedding say that we begin the wedding procession into the church by singing Epouro, however, since we are in the season of the Resurrection, would we then substitute Epouro with Ekhristos Anesti?

When Anba Botros came to our church a week ago, we began singing Epouro but Abouna stopped us and began singing Ekhristos Anesti, so I'm not sure if that is the proper thing to do. There's a wedding this Saturday, so if someone could please inform me so we can make preparations, I'd appreciate it! Also, if there is anything else that would be changed due to this season, please also inform me, thanks.

Becoming a Deacon.

So i have been Considering becoming a Deacon for the longest time now. but what is holding me back is that i do not know how to read coptic and i am afraid of doing something wrong. I feel that i should approach this with extreme high honor and a great deal of instense respect. i am just really afraid to mess up or soemthing that is wrong. i have always admired becoming a deacon but never did becuase the lead deacon in our church was a bit forceful when it came to the hymns. and tsony was the same when it came to teaching coptic. so i just never felt welcomed.

any advice for this dilemma?

I am interested in the Coptic Orthodox Church and have many questions concerning the Churche's beliefs. I would greatly appreciate any help from you, my brothers and sisters, in understanding the Church.

With that stated, according to the Coptic Orthodox Church, what was the reason for God to become incarnate and die upon the cross?

Was it in order to bear the punishment for our sins in order that we may be forgiven and saved? Or was it a demonstration of God's love for us and a means by which God reconciled us to him through cloaking himself with humanity? ???

i have a question regarding how these random catholic beliefs came about. i mean, making the mass shorter and all i can understand but what about things like St. Mary being born without sin, and pergatory, and the whole thing with the Holy Spirit proceeding from both the Father and the Son...like how did these things come about? was it just a random guy who thought of it out of the blue and convinced people with it with absolutely no proof or evidence from any of the Fathers? Is this considered a heresy? if it is, why didn't our fathers bring it down like they brought down the Arian heresy? i know very very very little about all of this, so take it easy with me.

also, another related question, is it ok if i tell people that they're wrong like catholics, protestants, etc. or is it rude to do so, and maybe i should just pray for them?

also, i thank God every day that i was born in the coptic orthodox church to good parents, but what about others, sometimes i feel really bad for them because they didn't have this chance that i have. i mean, if they were born to good parents in the orthodox church, they probably would have never rejected it, but they didn't have the chance. why is it that i had the chance but not them? is this the result of those people that came along the road and made up all these different religions? is it the result of their actions that all these people perish. all these people that are born into different religions, it's not their fault. what did they ever do wrong to deserve this? and what did i ever do right to deserve this? ...... is it wrong to ask all of these questions (in this paragraph) because i am questioning God's fairness? because i remember St. Anthony asked something along the same lines to God about the babies that die before they're born or when they're still babies or something like that and God told him to mind his own business. does God want me to mind my own business with this topic as well?
