Hello to all and Happy Feast of the Cross,

I just wanted to let everyone know that the congregation of St. Mary and St. Mena in Rhode Island has been a approved a huge loan and is now building a new church. The plans and designs of the churchare absolutely beautiful. It is a 100% replication of true coptic art, along with the correct number of domes, bell towers, altars, etc.

It is being overseen by HG. Bishop David, and foremost His Holiness Pope Shenouda. Sayedna loved the plans and approved on the designs and on the 5 million dollar loan.

The building is expected to be finished in a little over a year from now and we would like for whom ever may want to visit to come. Lastly, our church has incorporated a "Donate Link" on our website powered by Google. We really hope we can get donations, even a single dollar would greatly benefit. The church website is http://www.stmaryandstmenari.org

Thank you and pray for us,

-Dave

Does the Coptic Orthodox Church hold to the teaching of the aerial toll-houses: http://orthodoxwiki.org/Aerial_Toll-Houses?

"The theory of Aerial Toll-Houses regards the soul's journey after its departure from the body.

Dn. Andrew Werbiansky summarizes the theory (described in Fr. Seraphim Rose's book The Soul After Death) as follows: "following a person's death the soul leaves the body and is escorted to God by angels. During this journey the soul passes through an aerial realm which is ruled by demons. The soul encounters these demons at various points referred to as "toll-houses" where the demons then attempt to accuse it of sin and, if possible, drag the soul into hell."

This belief came up during a conversation with an Eastern Orthodox Christian. Seems very odd to me and mimics the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory.

Hi,

There are thousands of sayings of our desert fathers that help us grow spiritually. Often ,we read them, we find them cool but then that is it; we forget them . Out of these thousands of saying, for example, I remember and try to apply in my life only two sayings of the desert fathers every now and then.

1) From St Macarious the great

Should I care what people say of me?

A brother came to see Avva Macarius the Egyptian, and said to him, "Abba, give me a word, that I may be saved." So the old man said, "Go to the cemetery and abuse the dead." The brother went there, abused them and threw stones at them; then he returned and told the old man about it.

The latter said to him, "Didn't they say anything to you?" He replied, "No." The old man said, "Go back tomorrow and praise them." So the brother went away and praised them, calling them, "Apostles, saints, and righteous men." He returned to the old man and said to him, "Did they not answer you?" The brother said, "No."

The old man said to him, "You know how you insulted them and they did not reply, and how you praised them and they did not speak; so you too, if you wish to be saved, must do the same and become a dead man. Like the dead, take no account of either the scorn of men or their praises, and you can be saved."

From St Arsenious
In all situations St. Arsanious chose silence. His famous saying is:

"I have always something to repent for after having talked, but have never been sorry for having been silent" OR "Many time I spoke and regretted what I said, but about silence I will never have any regret".

I always remember this saying whenever I go wrong. I do regret my actions and I believe, this advise is helping me.

If there is anyone who makes use of the saying of the desert fathers in their lives, please share them.

Is it a coincidence that our Coptic New Year falls on the anniversary of the World Trade Centre Attacks?

Does anyone here find that strange - that our new year was based on the year that Diocletion performed MASS executions on Christians (around 284 AD). I mean, a year (a coptic year that is) is counted from that day, and it is usually corresponds to the 12 or 11th of September in the normal calendars.

Is it not just uncanny that the 11th September ALSO marks the day in which terrorists are forcing their religion on non-believers and persecuting them, terrorizing them for their beliefs?

Am I the only person to have seen this association or has anyone else thought about it??

Hello,
I have some questions concerning circumcision.

The 1st council of Jerusalem was concerning this issue: If they ought to circumcise Gentilles that were recently baptised, who were not following the teachings and commandments layed out in the Mosaic Law of Circumcision before?

The answer was no. There was no need.

This was not a mandatory requirement to be saved. The presiding Bishop (Saint James) concluded & summarised the council minutes and said that it was not necessary to be circumcised once u have been baptised to be saved.

Why then do we, as Coptic Orthodox men, get circumcised?? We are not jews by origin?? Why then do this to us?? :(

Secondly, Saint paul converted 2 men: One man, he was born of a Jewish mother and Greek father, he had him circumcised. WHy?
The other man, he was a complete gentile, and he did not have him circumcised. Why?

Also, why did God chose the penis to be cut, and not another part of the body??

And why is it there is no equivalent circumcision for women??

THanks

I really am enjoying the privilege offered to my generation by the 21st Century to investigate whatever they want by meeting with the PEOPLE THEMSELVES!! Thanks tasbeha!!

This is my other question. How is the work of St. Ephrem received by the Coptic Church? Specifically, the hymns he wrote for Holy Mother Mary to be prayed on each days of the week? (we call it "wudassie Maryam"- "Prayer of praise to Mary")

Is the prayer known at all? And if yes, how widely is it used by the ordinary Christians? Is it prayed during the Mass? Or just personally? Is it prayed simply by reading or in a form of singing?

Thanks in advance!

Tewahedo

I found a lot of lost sheep who are in desperate need of a shepherd. Lots of people ask questions seeking Christian views and others ask question just to satisfy their stubborn beliefs in atheism.

Many people who really need Christian answers and views can’t find any, because the majority on this site is atheists and off course they put them down and mock them. Lately, Muslims joined and answer according to their beliefs which doubled the trouble. I usually answer question to my best, but I found my voice is not sufficient among the flow of other negative answers.

My suggestion is that every one of us answer at least 2 or 3 questions a day. This site is in need of good Christian views which I believe you have it guys. This will be a great service to God to spread His word and it won’t cost us anything. Ok, maybe few minutes.
What do you think??

Logically, one would think they are Both, equally important. They complete each other and you can't have One without the Other?

Point 1.
I've noticed that in the Catholic Church, a person has the option of taking the Blood, or passing on it. (but for the sake of the question, I'll pass on this point b/c they have different rites)

Point 2.
In our COC, Deacons (those ordained who wear a black tunic) are allowed to distribute the Blood, ONLY, and are not allowed to touch the Body.

Does this mean, that we view the Body as of higher importance than the blood, and hence, a Deacon is not allowed to touch it, but allowed to touch the Blood?

I know this question may seem silly to many, but it's always bothered me and i have yet to find an answer for it.
Thanks
