I dont know if many of you received texts or messages on facebook, myspace, or whatever, about going to the united nations or somthing and protesting. If you did dont go reconsider what you are doing and think about the image you are giving christians. When we need something to happen or when we need justice we dont just go make trouble and protest untill we get it. No we are coptic orthodox children thats not how things were taught to be done. WE FAST, WE PRAY, WE SING, WE ATTEND LITURGY AND PRAY EVEN MORE! not one place in the bible did Christ protest, no one place did He handle a problem by protesting....he prayed and so did his saints. The pope told us to fast and pray, not to go out and cry and scream for the end of persecution to come now. Persecution does not end untill God says it ends, if it ended then we all know the end of times is to be near, we dont go out and cause trouble for the people who have nothing to do with this. All im saying is show them the true coptic orthodox faith and pray about this because taking matters into our own hands is like telling Our Lord Jesus Christ that we can do this with out You, we dont really need You now. Im not trying to make it seem like im attacking people or attack anyone i still do love you all, but please reconsider the image of Christ you are supposed to be showing.

Sorry if i said somthing wrong, sorry if i did anything to upset you, sorry if i am speaking against your faith or what you belive is right, and sorry for sinning against you. Just please consider and think before you act.

Lets pray for the persecutors of our brothers and sisters so they can find mercy in the Eyes Of God, and so that we too can find Mercy.

I have read about saint john chrysostome, and though many of his sermons were beautiful, I have also read that he actually hated the Jews, and he believed that God hates the Jews. Now we know as christians that of all people we should love the Jews. God loves the Jews, they are his chosen, and they will always be his chosen, as it is written "all isreal will be saved".

When I heard that John Chrysostome hated the jews, it really turned me off, I also remembered how in our own liturgy we bless John Chrysostome. And in fact, many of our beleifs such as the bread and wine becoming the true body and blood was spoken of and explained by John Chrysostome.

Here is a quote for John Chrysostome in year 379 "God always hated the Jews. It is essential that all Christians hate them". If he truly believed this, than I am actually upset that the coptic church believed this man was a saint. In the words of Jesus himself, "whoever says he loves me and hates his enemy is a LIAR".

I am sure many of you are aware of this, but the Antiochian Patriarch, the Alexandrian Greek Patriarch, and the Coptic Patriarch (Pope Shenouda III) have been working together for some now to reconcile and build bridges back to full communion. Unfortunately, because of some disgruntled monks, clergy, and self-professed "theologians," unity is being prevented. To make it worse, the heresy of Philitism is also preventing this. (Philitism is the heresy where a particular race or group says they are the pure form of Orthodoxy to the exclusion or limitation of others simply because they are Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Coptic, Antiochian, Armenian, etc.)
My proposal--to you and all Orthodox Christians--is to do as countless Orthodox Christians in the past have done: be the Church, not just part of it. I dare not suggest that we overthrow anyone, take anything over, or be something we are not--we are not Muslims or Roman Catholics, and are thus not militant, but rather we need to be vigilant. For too long we have been separated by the ignorance and pride of certain popular individuals in the Church, and for too long we have allowed ourselves to be tricked into believing the other to be wrong. We have allowed arrogance and impatience that started just before 451 AD to separate the Byzantine and Oriental traditions of the Holy Orthodox Faith.
Visit http://www.orthodoxunity.org/, and perhaps we may be able to find a way together to support this cause and full communion between us all.

Any starting questions, comments, concerns, statements, queries, or outbursts?

Hi,
I was talking to a friend of mine from church about some of the stuff we discussed in my ethics class, primarily in vitro fertilization, cryopreservation,....(and other ARTs)

Anyways I was telling her how in vitro fertilization is "morally illicit" according to the Catholic church because their doctrine states that there cannot be any separation between unity and procreation during intercourse. Then I asked if she knew what our Church thought of this method. She told me that she thinks it's fine as long as the couple is married. I don't think this is true, however, because the method in which they get the sperm is similar to masturbation which is frowned upon in our Church.

So I guess these are my questions:
1. What standing does our Church hold in regards to in vitro fertilization?
2. What is our Church's standing on other assisted reproductive technologies?
3. How do I convince my coptic friend that masturbation is wrong?
she says there's no evidence from the Bible that states that masturbation is wrong so I told her that it was a form of self sexual gratification which is wrong (quoted from Abouna Antony's sermon on this)

Thanks

hi, friends, this is a question i was asked by a protestant friend, and i'd like some help with the answer, please.
i was asked why there is nothing written about saint mary in the new testament after the book of acts if she was so important to the early church and what evidence is there that the very early church venerated her and asked for her intercessions.

my usual answer to these sorts of questions is that the book of hebrews speaks of a 'great cloud of witnesses' and this is why we know the saints are aware of what goes on down here on earth and so it is natural that they was also intercede with God on our behalf. as they prayed for the Christians while on earth, they will not stop that once they stand in the presence of God, indeed it will be much easier for them to do it.
also i explained that when saint mary said in the gospel of luke 'all generations will call me blessed' this was predicting her veneration, not just the fact that people would be impressed that she was Jesus' mother.

but the list of saints here does not include saint mary the virgin, so my friend says this means she wasn't venerated at this time. i think it is because she didn't die yet by this time, but my friend says she would have been over 80 by then if she was still alive.

so if you have a better answer, please share it with us, also i would like it if someone could post a link to information about the end of her life and how she died that is approved by the coptic church.

sorry, this is quite a big question but i have loads of protestant friends and am trying to explain orthodoxy to them.

(When I say Christian Churches, I'm referring to the ones Christ founded on Peter and the Apostles (Catholic & Orthodox)).

I find this strange... was it just a coincidence that every Christian in Egypt at the time of the Council of Chalcedon agreed together and disagreed with everyone else (non-Egyptians) about the things discussed in that council? Or how in the East-West Schism, everyone in the East just so happened to have the same opinion, while everyone in the West had another?

The answer to me seems that whatever people have learned within a culture will seem more "right" than what others learned. But what about the bishops in those councils? Did they happen to agree with each other simply because they were from the same place? Or maybe it was better communication between them compared to others... maybe that's the reason for some of these schisms.

Anyways, if I want to, lets say, believe in mortal and venial sins, can I choose to do so, while still being a Coptic Christian?

A side question: do the Patriarchs of Rome, Alex, Jerusalem, etc all have some sort of annual meeting or something? If not, WHY?
