Each year the Anglican Church holds a National Pilgrimage to Glastonbury, one of the most ancient sites of British Christianity, and associated in legend with a visit of our Lord with St Joseph of Arimathea. (This does not have to be accepted as dogma of course).

The Anglican Church invites an Orthodox community to celebrate a liturgy at this ancient Christian site, and this year the Oriental Orthodox have been given an opportunity to witness to our faith and celebrate the liturgy.

H.E. Metropolitan Seraphim will be celebrating, and some British Orthodox clergy and people will make the drive over to Glastonbury. But it would be good to have clergy and laity from other Oriental Orthodox Churches come so that it is a witness to our shared faith. Many Anglicans are presently unsure of the future of their Church, and it seems to me that we should present a witness to our welcoming and traditional Orthodox Faith whenever we can.

SERVICE IN GLASTONBURY ABBEY

Saturday, 19 June 2010
The Annual Glastonbury Pilgrimage
St. Mary’s Chapel in the Undercroft

9.00 a.m. Raising of Morning Incense
9.30 a.m. Divine Liturgy & homily by Abba Seraphim, Metropolitan of Glastonbury

I am going to drive down. And I hope that I might see some other folk there from Tasbeha and other places and Churches. It would be sad if the Anglicans give us such a prominent opportunity to witness to our faith and not many people take it up. If the weather stays as it is then it will be a pleasant time in any case. The Liturgy is celebrated in the ruins of the ancient Abbey which is said to go back to the time of Christ.

God bless

Father Peter

Dear brothers and sisters,

This is an invitation to the Oriental Orthodox Festival which will be taking place on Saturday May 8th, at the Coptic Centre, Shephalbury Manor Broadhall Way, Stevenage SG2 8RH from 10:30 am to 4 pm.

The Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches in the UK organises the Festival, and this year is grateful to His Grace Bishop Angaelos of the Coptic Orthodox Church for offering the hospitality of the Coptic Centre at Stevenage.

The Festival includes a con-celebrated liturgy in which clergy of all of the member churches of the Oriental Orthodox community participate. A buffet lunch follows, made up of contributions brought by all of the participants at the festival, and the festival will conclude with a number of contributions from various Orthodox communities, which may include choirs performing hymns and songs from the various Orthodox traditions represented, and one or more short talks by some of the clergy.

The festival is an important opportunity for the various communities of the Oriental Orthodox communion in the UK to meet together to express our unity in the Orthodox Church, and to develop bonds of friendship and fellowship. It is important that as many clergy and people attend as possible to make the festival a success.

TIMETABLE

The festival will begin with a liturgy at 10:30 am which will conclude by 12:30 pm.

A shared lunch will follow.

After plenty of time for lunch and conversation it is hoped that a number of churches will provide contributions in the form of choral performances, and it is hoped that there will be one or two short talks.

The festival will conclude at 4pm.

ORGANISATION

Please advertise the festival among the clergy and people of your own Orthodox community. It would be helpful to have the festival added to the notices and news of your community over the next weeks. Please encourage your community members to attend the festival, where they will be able to worship with and meet members of all the other communities in our Oriental Orthodox communion.

It would be helpful if clergy could reply to this email indicating whether or not they will be leading a group to the festival. Please ensure that details of the festival are passed to other clergy and congregations in your Orthodox community.

If your churches have a choir then you are invited to perform a number of hymns or spiritual songs according to your own musical tradition. If your choir would like to perform for 10-15 minutes then please also reply to this email with details of the materials you would like to perform. If there are many choirs wishing to perform then the time for each choir may be shortened.

Please ensure that people and groups wishing to attend the festival are aware that they should bring a contribution of food for the shared meal. In the past this has been most enjoyable and the various Orthodox churches have brought their own traditional foods for others to share.

It would be most helpful if you could indicate if you will be attending, and how many people you expect to attend with you. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I cannot guarantee to have the answer, but I will attempt to find out an answer for you.

Seeking your prayers

Father Peter Farrington

Secretary to the Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches

Dear all,
Please watch this link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/arabic/artandculture/2010/06/100604_copts_street.shtml
You will realise the biased view of the presenter, and indeed the whole crew of BBC Arabic in different topics. The e-mail is:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/arabic/institutional/2009/06/090622_contactus.shtml
Suggested letter to complain about that particular program below:Dear Sir/ Madam

I write to complain about the recent documentary on the Arabic BBC called in Arabic “Mala Yokal-Matanaseroon” which means “What cannot be Said, converts to Christianity” in English. The documentary was aired on Saturday 22 May after 9PM news GMT and was repeated on Thursday 27th May at same time.

While I was pleased and encouraged by BBC Arabic paying attention to the plight of the converts from Islam and the suffering they and their families in the Middle East, I was disappointed to see that this program damages the BBC’s reputation of being honest and impartial.

1-The presenter Mr Omar Abdel Razik did not visit well known cases of converts who were imprisoned without charge under the emergency law for no reason other than conversion from Islam to Christianity, they are many, for example Mr Bahaa Elakkad 57y who was jailed in harsh condition and was torured for 18 months http://www.opendoorsuk.org.uk/news/news_archives/001693.php
Or Gaser Mohammed Mahmoud who was locked up in mental hospital for converting from Islam.
http://archive.compassdirect.org/en/display.php?page=news&lang=en&length=long&idelement=3860&backpage=archives&critere=&countryname=Egypt&rowcur=75

Indeed there are tens of cases http://archive.compassdirect.org/content/index.php?id=25&session=&PHPSESSID=5f5cb211671012c87ee0c739836c6433&choixlang=en&&countryname=Egypt&operateur=AND&rowcur=75&rowcur=0
which show the government of Egypt is leading and inspiring the persecution of converts and is the main obstacle to freedom of religion.

2- Mr Omar Abdel Razik while trying to blame the Coptic priest for attacking Islam, he did not say any thing about Muslim preachers who attack Christian faith on the national Egyptian TV, newspapers and in thousands of books which litter the streets of Cairo sold at subsidised prices under the nose of the Egyptian police with one purpose, attacking Christianity, some of these books are printed by Al-Azhar mosque and paid for by Muslim AND Christian tax payers. Please refer to the last paragraphs in this page from Al-Azhar official web site to see example of hate incited by Al-Azhar mosque, again, paid for by Muslim AND Christian tax payers:
http://www.alazhr.com/non-muslims/Chapter3.htm

3- When the Muslim guest made allegations that the Christian missionaries go to the Middle East under the guise of food or treatment while Islamic missionaries do not do that, this statement was extremely biased because the Islamic missionaries are not threatened to be killed or imprisoned and there is no laws against there preaching while Christian missionaries in the Islamic countries risk being killed or imprisoned by the local laws or the Muslim mobs who can kill them with impunity. I am certain Mr Omar Abel-Razik is aware of that because of his background therefore his presentation was biased.

I expected your TV presenter to be well informed of the facts prior to the interview. I expect a full investigation from the BBC into why the points I alluded to above and look forward to the BBC addressing all the imbalances in the presentation by further episode which addresses the points I raised.

Yours sincerely

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is an official canon relating to whether the girl can walk down the aisle at her wedding. The enforced rule in our churches here is that a girl must be given over to her groom at the church door and they walk in together to the alter. I'm wondering if this is actually the church canon.

the reason i ask is 3 fold

1. i have heard previously that the groom comes into epoouro and the girl follows to shere maria, semouti shaf ensob or teoi enhekano, which would make more sense then both the bride and groom coming into epouro (i mean she's not a king)

2. From my point of view the wedding is symbolic of the relationship of Christ and myself/the church, meaning HE leads before me and i follow, also that he has gone before me to heaven (the alter) and waits there to welcome me to the place he has prepared for me "i go to prepare a place for you" this fits with the image of Christ in revelations awaiting his Bride for the wedding feast of the lamb. i don't understand how this symbolism would work if both the bride and groom walk in together.

3. i have no personal reason for walking down the aisle, my father has passed on and i HATE being the center of attention, but it means so much symbolically for me that my husband walk in first and i follow.

does someone have any links/videos/articles that say definitively what the canon is in relation to this? I'm happy to submit to church authority if it is indeed canon that the girl be given over at the church's door, however if it is not canon i need definite proof in writing or from the mouth of the pope/synod/H.E MET. bishoy before i have a leg to stand on and question the standing rule here.

Someone said to me that either HH. Pope shenouda or HE Met Bishoy answered this question on aghapy, but i have no copy of the answer, if someone does or can get a copy of the aghapy episode i'd be more then happy to pay for shipping costs for a copy

thanks all.

Which churches are monophysites?

Also, can someone kindly explain to me what happened in the council of chalcedon??

What went on? When was this?

What is the dispute with the Greek/Russian churches over chalcedon? No matter how much I insist that we are miaphysites, they tell me that we are monophysites.

How is it they think they know us more than we know ourselves??
Is Saint Peter the Head of the Church on Earth?

Hi,

When Christ told Saint Peter: "You are the rock on which I will build my CHurch" - does that signify a desire from Our Lord Jesus Christ to make Peter the head of the Church?

This raises a few questions:

a) In the 1st Council of Jerusalem - the apostles and elders gathered. If Saint peter was the sole head, there would be no need for all of them to gather. His word would have been final.
b) In the early Church (Nicene and Post-Nicene), the One Apostolic Church lived by many patriarchs each one being responsible for their Church (Diocese). It wasn't only Rome.

But - what is Saint Peter's Role in all this?

What do we tell Catholics who ask us to admit that Christ gave the keys of heaven to Saint Peter and HIM ONLY (i.e. that only unless we are part of Saint Peter's Church that we are saved).

I usually answer and say that we are Saint Peter's faith. It was Saint Peter's faith that Christ built His Church; not on one man. But even if it is on Saint Peter, what about the other apostles? What is their role? To submit to Saint Peter, or to saint Peter's successor? What if that successor suddenly decided to introduce heresies? What then? Do we all introduce heresies in our Churches because of that??

What do you think? What is our position as orthodox Christians in light of responding to the Catholics concerning us submitting to their Pope's authority.

Personally, after what I've seen, I feel it would be extremely dangerous to unite with Catholics.

a) THe RC is divided already. They have communities that are against each other: You have the latin right against the non traditionalists, and they are still excommunicated from the World Wide Body of the RC.

b) The RC has a growing and extremely dangerous Charismatic community. I've seen it and it is HUGELY dangerous.

You would NOT believe it if I told you that I witnessed myself catholics dancing around the alter of Notre Dame Cathedral - would you??

But here is the video of the event I attended (that TRULY shocked me to the core).

c) They do not partake usually of the Blood and Body of Christ. They argue that either one saves you; so it is up to you if you wish to have both. This is a lack of orthodoxy in their part, and a compromise in Apostolic Traditions.

I could go on, but the other issues all result in compromises in apostolic tradition and teachings.

Finally, the main issues of Purgatory/Immaculate Conception and Filoque are still important.

For me, above all of this, the most important difference IS the heresy of the Filoque. I thought it was trivial before, but now I see that our entire theology is based on a Triune God where each Person has a function: the Father is the Source, and from Him proceeds the Son and the Holy Spirit. From the Will of the Father, proceeds the action of the Son, and the procession of the live giving Holy Spirit. I was not aware of this importance until of late; but we cannot accept the Filoque. Its no laughing matter.

What do you all think??
