Hi all,

hehe, hope the title didnt give u a bad impression, it's not that i dont wanna fast XD
but i, and many others got a text message that we will fasting today and tomorrow (friday is always fasting anyway),
but I called my priest to ask him if it's a decision from church and he said he didn't know about it, however he also got a message. He didn't told me clear if we must fast or not, (i only heard him say, i guess: " sibha" (let it go)). But
what I think and my dad also told me, that we shouldn't do anything, whether it's good or not, if it's not led by the church. It's like: we do whatever we want, with or without abouna.
Dunno, don't say that fasting is bad, no, it's good. So i put it on facebook and I get contrary reactions.

What do u think?

(some people say that anba angelos came with it)

gb

I want to do something. I feel so hopeless for Egypt. So starting from 12:00 noon until 6:00 PM, I am fasting and praying with all my heart in the hopes of God's miraculous works for Egypt.

The people are everywhere killing and destructing just to get the president to resign. They are at the street of where my cousins, aunts, uncle, and Grandma lives. They are at the edge of getting killed, the people want to go to the building and destruct everything.

I can't do this by myself, if you are willing to fast and pray with me, Maybe things will change, by God's will. Please pray, I want to help. I want peace. I am going to do everything that I can to help, even though I might be 14 and just a person with hopes, but I have faith in the lord. I know things can change, I just hope that my family will be okay and everyone in Egypt.

I can't resist the thought of everyone getting hurt. I can't resist the thought of this insecure world we live in.

I am waiting for Jesus, my lord to come, and take me with him if I am worthy enough. I know most of you here are adults and have jobs and studies and family to take care of, but it will not hurt to just say a simple prayer. Please.

Thank you. Please also pray for me, the biggest sinner. May God have mercy on us and come soon to take the righteous with him to heaven.

Is there a sense that they are as incompatible with Orthodoxy as Protestant songs? There is such a beautiful modern tradition of Coptic iconography that it is hard to understand why these Western images are present everywhere?

What is the reason?

Father Peter

Hello all,

I keep getting myself into the same silly argument over and over with non-Orthodox people on another board I post on. I maintain, as it seems to me that it is right to maintain, that Islam does not worship the true God (the God of Christianity, which is the only God there is). I say Muhammad's "Allah" is a false God.

The non-Orthodox people who disagree with me always respond: "But what about the Jews? They reject the Holy Trinity, too, but surely they also worship the one God? Our Lord and Savior was a Jew, and we accept the OT prophets like David, Isaiah, Ezekiel and others, who were also Jews. Your view is inconsistent and wrong."

Honestly, I don't have a very good answer for this. I had an answer (maybe not a very good one, from an Orthodox perspective) when I was Roman Catholic that seemed to satisfy most of them, but now that I'm not bound by that anymore, I'm really trying to find out the Orthodox position on this. I just spent a half hour searching for "Pope Shenouda III + Jews" and "Coptic Orthodox + Jews" and many other combinations on Google...I got a lot of very strange and sometimes interesting results, but nothing helpful for answering this question.

I have watched various sermons on orthodoxsermons.org by Fr. Anthony Messeh, Fr. Paul Girguis, and others that say that Orthodox Christians don't worship the same God as the Jews, or the same God as the Muslims. I believe it (these other religions deny the Holy Trinity, after all), but I don't feel like I can explain it to other people when it is true that the Old Testament is accepted as the words of God, the OT prophets are accepted, etc. When I tried to make the argument last time that the Jews aren't worshiping the God who Christians are worshiping, one of these non-Orthodox people called me a "Marcionite heretic"! Ouch! :-\

Please, a little help, preferably from a Patristic viewpoint...!

Endless thanks for your time and assistance, Tasbeha.

I have lately gotten very confused about which books the Coptic Church accepts in its canon. The books sometimes referred to as deuterocanon are not well defined by the Coptic Church and I haven't found a list except this one to tell what "dueterocanonical" books we accept. I know the Eastern Orthodox accept third Maccabees and 1 Esdras (I think they have Ezra and Nehemiah combined as 2 Esdras), but I haven't got a definitive answer as to whether we accept them into our canon (It never says in the link that we don't accept them).

I assumed we don't accept them because they were not listed in the previous link, however today I was listening to a sermon by Fr. Tadros Y. Malaty, here (Septuagaint Books 1) and at about 3:40 he mentions that (my poor translation from arabic, he is talking about the books Orthodox accept in addition to those accepted by the RCC)

"The Churches which are Orthodox also accept these deuterocanonical books as canonical and they are: 1 Esdras or ... , the Prayer of Manasseh, 3 Maccabees, and Psalm 151"

Can anybody shed light on the situation. I can't find any reasons why we wouldn't accept them. They were also included in the Septuagint and I've yet to see something that says we don't accept them.

Thanks in advance and please pray for me.

We have been married for few years now and had lived together in sin for many ears before marriage. We love each other very much and have no issues in our marriage other than lack of sexual drive from my wife. She has no desire to have sex and I do. I need it at least once a week, but she refuses me all the time. I manage to get some intercourse once every few weeks if I press to on the matter very hard. She is a perfect wife otherwise and I cannot bring anything against her but the issue of sex is very important to me and I cannot carry on in my marriage with the amount I get now. We did talk to the priest about it, but no improvement. She sais that the only way she can have sex with me is if she forces herself to it but is unable to impose such a stress on herself once a week. I don’t want her to force herself, I want her to want it. She just doesn’t have a sexual drive at all. She was not willing even before marriage when we lived together in sin. Would I be allowed to divorce? I don’t want to but I am afraid I may commit adultery or destroy our good relationship by my anger about it.

I do not understand why every Christmas party and everything that is happy canceled despite what happened in Alexandria. I understand that it was a terrible event and everything but shouldn't we be happy?? Like no matter how happy or sad we are, things will stop once God wants it to. All we can do is pray. At Abouna Bishoy Kamel's funeral, his wife wore white because she was happy that her husband left this world and went to heaven.

I understand Christmas parties cancelled. But my church had a talent show scheduled for next week and they cancelled it because of what is going on in Egypt! How does having a talent show interfere with events in Egypt??? If you replace it with a prayer or something ok but its just canceled! I find the two events irrelevant. The martyrs went to heaven. Amen. More people will die. So are we going to be mourning our whole lives? Can someone please explain this all to me.

That if they keep on saying that, terrorists are going to say "Ohh...
