Greetings all,

This might be a silly question, but here it goes...

I am considering attending a Coptic Orthodox Church near my home (in the US). This would be the first time I ever attended any Orthodox Church. I am American born and not Egyptian. Do you think this will be accepted? I don't know if the congregation is mostly Egyptian and if so, will they perhaps view me as an oddity. :)

Or is it more common then I think to have a non-Egyptian attending a Coptic Church?

I would be interested in hearing from anyone else who may have gone through a similar process (i.e. you are American or European, non-Egyptian, but felt led to the Coptic Church).

I would also be interested in hearing from Copts themselves. Do you welcome all to your Church?

Antonious

Hi guys!

I wonder if you've already talked on this subject. I found this very interesting:

The president and founder of "Voice of the Copts", Dottore Architetto Ashraf Ramelah, made the following apeal:

"Regarding Public demonstration of Copts on January 9, 2011 in Milan, Italy We are appalled at the Copts’ rejection of fellow protesters who were draped in the Israeli national flag as a show of solidarity with Israel and the Jews.

We strongly condemn the actions of those Coptic Christians (mostly immigrants living in Italy) against the Italian citizens who joined them for the same fight against a common enemy.

This display of anti-Semitism has no place in our struggle for freedom in the world today.

Voice of the Copts stands together with the Jews of Israel and Jews around the world to confront the vicious attacks stemming from a religious and political ideology aimed against each and every one of us who are non-Muslim.

Furthermore, as Christians we stand upon the Biblical precept that we are grafted into the promises of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, a legacy which serves as the basis of our support of the Jews and their inheritance, and we join with them in their suffering.

Those of us who live in Egypt or have loved ones there may in fear or ignorance act out against the Jews, but these sentiments are in no way right or acceptable and will surely lead to devastating results for Copts, politically and religiously.

In addition, as Israel is a sovereign state recognized by the entire world, including the Egyptian regime, Copts have a choice to either align themselves with Islamic hatred or to align themselves with the official stance of their government. There is absolutely no justification for the former, for even if this position actually serves to reduce the Islamic bomb attacks, shootings and kidnappings which take place regularly against Copts, which it clearly does not, it is unconscionable.

We thank God for Israel, the one free democratic country within the Middle East. We pray for their prosperity and safe-keeping. May America and European countries continue to support and strengthen Israel! "

What do you guys think?

It has come to my attention that far to many people within the orthodox church think that we, the orthodox church, believe in the concept of original sin. I would like for this to be cleared up here and now. There is actually NO ONE in my entire church, save myself, that knows that we in fact do NOT believe in original sin and that this is a catholic doctrine. EVEN our priests teach original inherited sin. I have decided to give a lecture at my church about this issue, but I need as MANY sources as I can to convince them this is NOT an orthodox doctrine. Please, everyone who knows about this topic give me as MANY early church father quotes on original sin, and how we dont believe we inherit the sin of Adam but rather his fallen nature.

This raises another question, those who believe in original sin believe that the purpose of baptism is to wash away this original sin (certain priests in our church are also teaching this)... I need an answer from th early church fathers on what EXACTLY is the purpose of baptism, and why Christ made it necessary for salvation.

God Bless

May the peace of God be with you all. I have a question about baptism for non-Coptic Christians before marrying from the Coptic faith. My brother (who is from the Methodist Faith and has been baptised already) intends to marry a lady from the Coptic faith but hears rumours that he must convert through baptism before being able to marry the lady. Can anyone clarify this for me and the essence of the baptism if it is true.

Thank you.

Nofri!
In the Catholic church they have liturgical months dedicated to different holy.... June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart and then July is dedicated to the Precius Blood. Do Copts have months dedicated to different holy...or what is your tradition?

Hi,

I am reading the Bible from A-Z.

In Matthew 3:16, the bible says:

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him".

The icon of the feast of the Pentecost shows the Holy Spirit as a dove. Some Eastern Orthodox Icons depict the Father as an old bearded man.But why is the Holy Spirit always depicted as a dove? I heard a reference to Noah's dove, but I am not sure if that is that correct explanation.Anyone?
