Hi all,
so i've been wondering about this sacred part of the old testament- the ark of the covenant. i have a few qs, and i'd love to hear some of your thoughts/inquiries about this topic.
does our church believe that the Ethiopian Church is in possession of the ark?

does the destruction of Solomon's temple, which had contained the ark, perhaps signify that it is obsolete, being that it was after Christ's coming (and Christ is our new temple)?

why were only priests of the Levi tribe allowed to carry it?

i was watching a video about the ark and it mentioned a story of a man who was carrying the ark. the man (probably a priest) simply put his hand on the ark because he thought it would tilt over and was suddenly consumed by fire. i don't know how credible this story is or if it's legend, but why would God do that?

why was there manna in the ark? what's the significance of putting bread in it? i read somewhere that if represented Christ as the bread of life. however, if bread eventually rots, then wouldn't it rot in the ark?

My computer was out getting fixed so I didn't have much access to the forum but anyway,

Can priests pray a different liturgy if they are in a different church?

For example,

Father Paphnotious Malek (I tried to pick an obvious coptic name) goes to an Eritrean Orthodox church. Is Father Paphnotious allowed to pray their liturgy or can he only take Communion with them?

Thanks!

After thinking about the post about the Amen Alleluia Conclusions, another question arose. Why can't the churches change or add to the litanies to fit our conditions. I think that there are a lot of things that we should be praying for that maybe different than Egypt. For example, many people are converting here, why is the litany of the catechumens only in the Gregorian Liturgy? Why don't we add a litany for Persecution?

Also, why don't we add Saints to the commermoration? The only female saint is Saint Mary unless the priest adds more.

Please note that by me saiyng "we", I mean the church, the elders, etc. Not us tasbeha.org people!

Dear All,

We want to make you aware of a patristics group we started in July of 2011. The group is Coptic Orthodox Patrological Theology (COPT). We aim to discuss Coptic Orthodox theology through the lens of the Church Fathers.

We read books/treatises from the Fathers, then discuss them at meetings held via telephone or other remote conferencing (so that participants are not limited by any geographic region).

The co-founders of the group were motivated by a lecture by Fr. Tadros Malaty. In it, he talked about how knowledge of theology in the Coptic community is (and has recently been) on the decline. He said back in the 50s when the "Sunday School Movement" (the era of Pope Shenouda and other theologians like him) was on the rise, it had not been integrated into the Church. To the extent that when a group of youths would go to church to hold a meeting, they would have to hold their meeting outside.

As the leaders of the Sunday School Movement became clergy, the movement was integrated into the Church. At first, this resulted in a great revival of knowledge in the Coptic community. Eventually, however, all the responsibility was shifted to the priest. If someone questioned the Church, he would be directed to the priest. If someone questioned a doctrine, he would be directed to the priest. Naturally, the priest(s) of any one church could not handle all of this and knowledge started dwindling.

We've always had an interest in theology, and we felt we should do something after hearing Fr. Tadros Malaty, so we decided to organize COPT. Please visit our website and facebook page to learn more about us if you are interested. We've held 4 meetings thus far, and we are reading and discussing St. Basil's "On the Holy Spirit" in our next three meetings (first one to be on August 31).

COPT Website
COPT Facebook Page

Rather, I would then start the response at "Doxa ci kyrie".

Recently, a fellow chanter told me that this is no longer valid and that there is a 2004 decision from the Holy Synod that says that we must say the full text of the response, regardless of the diptych, because that response is for the saints and not the congregation members whom have passed...

Does anyone know if this is true or not, or if someone has heard or been taught the same as me and was corrected?

I know the Synodal decisions are unfortunately not documented and published.. but I'm banking on something being known.

thanks muchly

Midiane.

Hello everyone,

I am posting this in every category so everyone can get a chance to see this and vote!

Recently, there have been groups that protested that Muslim prayers should be held in public schools, beginning with Valley Park Middle School in Toronto, Canada.
Hi everyone,
I have a question that has been bugging me for quite some time. Is it ok to diverge away from telling people we are fasting? Like during lunch at work or school when people see you not eating or not eating meat and dairy, If they ask why we are not eating is it wrong to just say im not hungry or something along those lines. I see muslims talk about how they are fasting and they show it off a bit and then people get sympathetic (blughhh). I dont want sympathy! I want prayers! Our Lord told us to not appear to men to be fasting, so how can we balance not telling people but yet keeping our fast without lying?

please pray for me.

Hi,

As you all probably know, the Greek Orthodox Church, and their faithful, celebrate 2 birthdays:

* The day they were born, and
* The day they were baptised on.

Do we do this in the Coptic Orthodox Church?

If not - why not? Surely our baptism is important!? No?

Is there any chance of us restarting this??

I think the Greek Orthodox Church, what they do is they even call it a Name Day - i.e. the name of the saint whose feast it is on the day you were born.

Finally, can someone tell me where I can find the Coptic Saints feast days??

Thanks

Hey all -

As the Fast of St. Mary approaches I believe it will be edifying to prepare ourselves by getting to know more about our Heavenly Mother.

If I may begin:

1) There isn't much mention of St. Mary in the Gospels, let alone mention of her interaction with the disciples. My question is: What was her role in Jesus' ministry? Was she with Him at all times?

2) Did St. Mary give birth with or without pain?

3) Does anyone know anything about the etymology of the name Mary?

Please post any books/articles/media/questions/comments that might be helpful.

Thanks.
