Is it correct in our church for her to confess to him because she once confided to me that she couldn't always say the whole truth thinking more of Abouna as her dad than Abouna. Then, someone told her that confession to your dad isn't even allowed... so is it?

jesuslover

A few Copts from Australia have put together a podcast called Concerned Copts:

At grass roots, Concerned Copts is a podcast composed of a group of contributing individuals who address topics that are not generally discussed in the Coptic community. Topics that perhaps are perceived as taboo, or haven't been engaged exhaustively on a deeper level. Cc seeks to encourage critical thinking and healthy discussion in order to inspire and perpetuate a more open minded community. A community filled with diverse individuals.

Their first podcast is called: Homosexuality and the Coptic Church Part1.

Homosexuality has been an issue (or some would argue a non issue) of discussion with in the coptic church regarding its place in society and in religion. Is homosexuality a deviant alternate lifestyle, that is a result of rebellion? Or an uncontrolled sexual preference that people develop or a are born with? What are the social impacts of our views of homosexuality and its relevance in our culture?

Have a listen and leave your comments: http://concernedcopts.podbean.com/

You can also find Concerned Copts on facebook so you can pop by and say hello or have a chat.

Take care!

He keeps telling me that he thinks he doesnt need abouna to confess, and that he confesses to God directly, instead of having someone in between him and God. I tell him that God gave his disciples the power to forgive sins upon the earth, and to loose every bond of iniquity. He tells me "I can still confess to God directly" :-\ .I have tried time and time again to convince him, but he won't do as I say.

"The Question is with regards to the who/how/when do the bride and groom walk down the isle."
as we understand it, and as obtained from the following link from Coptic Heritage website:
http://www.copticheritage.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=PagEd&file=index&page_id=381

1- The groom represents Christ and the bride represents the Church

2- The groom has a procession first - as Christ is the first fruit of humanity leading and paving the way for the church to follow, he ascended to heaven (the alter) to prepare a place for the church so that "where he is there she may be also" - and will be waiting at heaven (the alter) to unite the church to himself. The groom is processed to the tune of "oh king of peace" (Epouro) to explain that symbolism of him representing Christ

3- The bride has a procession after the groom with her parish priest/confession father (Not her physical father, but the confession father) - as she represents the church which follows in Christ's footsteps and is lead by the clerical ranks (i.e the Bishop and Priests) to meet her bridegroom Christ. The bride is processed to the shere Mari`a, Shere ne Mari`a , the second Cemoti , Teoi enhikanoc , the joyful Sherat, and Ypar;enoc (as much as time permits) - this is done as St Mary represents the church (just as through St Mary came salvation, so through the church comes salvation, just as St Mary was pure, undefiled and consecrated to the Lord, so the church is just as Christ's body and blood was given to the world through St Mary, so the same through the church)
so the hymns to St Mary are sung to explain the symbolism of the bride representing the church.

This also fits with the non-symbolic meaning of the groom receiving his bride at the hands of the Church i.e - through her being handed to him by a bishop and/or priest - (rather then the western tradition of her being given by her physical father). And that they are united before God - at the alter- rather then walking in together.

This also fits to explain the mystery of the sacrament - I.e two walk in separately as 2 and leave as 1.

I would be keen to learn the meaning behind the church cannon if it is different.

We have been informed that other servants in Egypt and America and Europe have practiced the sacramental ritual as discussed above - But I was also informed that His Holiness does not endorse this as it is a practice that is no longer done

Can someone tell me if the change in practice is now the official rite/cannon or has it just been phased out with no apparent reason

Who is responsible for the church canon/rites is there an authority responsible for this that I can contact?

It's great, and makes a fantastic supplement to the rather breathtaking 30 minute run-through of 2000 years of Alexandrine Orthodox history given to me by my priest at the first liturgy I attended.

One event I am curious about that is only briefly covered is the Council of Tyre, which led to the exile of the Bishop to Traves in Western Europe, and apparently sought to exonerate Arius from the accusations of heresy against him (most of the bishops in attendance being Arians), despite his having been condemned at the earlier Nicaean council.

This, to me, seems so extraordinarily crazy that I really want to learn more about it. Are there any other resources available in English from which to study the goings on of this council? Thank you all for any suggestions.

I know that it is not accepted, so I sent him a link to the Southern US Diocese's literature on the subject. To me this is enough to settle the issue, of course. But for my friend, he pointed that it seems to him that the details about absolution for the dead contradict some of the reasons for not believing in purgatory.

He says that the objection that purgatory is against salvation is contradicted by the fact that the church absolves the soul of the departed. If the church absolves the soul of the departed, then doesn't that also deny that salvation is only through the blood of Christ?

How should I respond to this?

He was born in Upper Egypt in mid thirties of last century. At a young age he was filled with desires to be a monk. He asked the Lord Christ by day and night to facilitate for him the parting from this world to go to the desert but he didn’t know where to go.

This Saint became a monk in his early years, devoted himself to the ascetic life, and learned the church books. While he was sitting at the roof of his house, he heard a voice calling him by his name, giving him specific direction to St. Mina Church in El Zahra in old Egypt “Masr El Kadema” and asked him to go there by taking bus # 93. This voice took place three times in three consecutive days. When he arrived at St. Mina Church, he stood and prayed for a few minutes then to his surprise he heard the same voice calling him by his name “ did I need to visit you three times for you to believe and come here” he went down to his knees and kissed his hand. This person was Abouna Mina which was later ordained as Pope Kyrillos.

Very similar story we know about St. Ephraem El-Soriani: One day, it happened that while St. Ephraem El-Soriani was praying, he saw a pillar of light which extended from earth to heaven. When he marveled at what he saw, he heard a voice saying to him, "That what you saw is St. Basil, Bishop of Caesaria." St. Ephraem longed to see St. Basil and he went to Caesaria. He entered the church and stood in a corner of it. He saw St. Basil in his priestly vestments embroidered with gold. St. Ephraim doubted the holiness of St. Basil. The Lord showed him a white dove that alighted over St. Basil's head. God then inspired St. Basil of the presence of St. Ephraem. St. Basil called him by his name, and St. Ephraem marveled at how he knew him. They greeted each other, and St. Basil ordained him a deacon.

He spent few months serving with Abouna Mina in Masr El Kadema then he went to El Sourian Monastery and was ordained a monk by the late Bishop Anba Theophilus who named him abouna Agabious El-Soriani. He was assigned numerous responsibilities but later he was responsible for the electrical generator in the Monastery. He didn’t care about his appearance and if you visit his cell, the very first thing you noticed was the amount of dust that covers everything. He was very simple, always smiling and was loved by all monks.

Despite the many virtues he had, Father Agabious was constantly hidding them confusing everyone who deals with him and he refused any position assigned to him outside the monastery. Early in his monastic life, HH Pope Kyrillos offered him to be a Bishop but he refused and escaped to the desert for few days. It was normal to hear him talking to himself and when you ask him “who are you talking to?” He pretend to be asleep when infact he was talking to Saints or seeing an apperance.

As with many Saints, the Lord informed him that his departure drew near and 1986 he departed our world to join the victorious land in heaven.
His prayers guard us against all our enemies, and Glory be to our God, forever. Amen.
