Hello Everyone,

We recently had a visit to our parish from an Antiochian Orthodox priest who is himself a convert from Anglicanism. He told us about a small mission parish which he is running from a local university and is growing steadily.

One of the things he mentioned is that most of the liturgical traditions which Orthodox Churches have haven't been well adopted by westerners because they're too hard to chant for native speakers of the English tongue. In his parish they have evolved their own tradition which is based more on Russian style chant which has been very successful.

In Fiji one of our missionary fathers noted that the locals have started to acclimatise the liturgy to their environment by chanting in a way which sounds more harmonically like it is of pacific rather than coptic origin.

One of the fathers in my Church is an Anglican convert and he can only chant in a traditional English sort of way, I wanted to record him praying the agpeya and title it as something like 'the coptic prayer of the hours according to the eastern rite'. :)

Another convert who is also a senior deacon is given the most important roles in our liturgy but struggles with the pronunciation and simply cannot chant our hymns.at.all.

Given that it is so challenging for westerners, I want an indication of how many of us would be willing to make the big sacrifice of giving away our musical tradition for one which is better suited to people of western origin?

One of our challenges to bringing Orthodoxy to our western brothers is that it doesn't fit these moulds and our churches are full of Egyptians who probably don't want their standing traditions suddenly transformed into a westernised version of themselves/

Knowing that there won't be an overnight change, how can we on a church by church level encourage participation in our liturgy?

Please pray for me,

LiD

Hi,

The Church in Tahrir Sq is obviously being used to help the demonstrators as a makeshift hospital. However, there have been photos going around the internet of Muslim women praying there in front of the Altar.

(I guess they were standing in front, praying (facing away from the Altar) because its the only place that has a carpet.

Is this disrespectful? How does the Coptic Church view this action?

But my main question is this:

Are we being tolerant, because we have no other choice??

I mean, my priest won't allow catholic songs in the Church, so I'm a bit surprised to see that priests are allowing muslim prayers there.

Secondly, is this reciprocal ?? I mean - would muslims be happy if a mosque was being used as a makeshift hospital and Christians used it also to pray the vespers there?? Would they be OK with that??

I pass women with Burkas every day despite it being illegal. I eat halal meat on a regular basis because that's all that's on for sale at many times.

I really hope Western Europe and the US learn from the story of the Coptic Church. (Let's put big issues like homosexuality/abortion/single mums etc aside for now). I believe since the Arab invasion of Egypt, it has been inevitable that we have absorbed (unwillingingly and unknowingly) a lot of their cultures and attitudes. i.e. if someone is different than you, they are frowned upon.

Why is it that my parents and everyone else like them will frown at someone who has tattoos, piercings or even coloured hair? There is no theological reason to think of these people as "further from God", yet being bought up in the Australian Coptic culture I have been - Ive had the impression that anyone remotely "off beat" is treated as toxic.

How, if we are unable to welcome people who look different, are we able to truly welcome people who are different? I'm talking of people who need Christian Grace more than anyone.

In the words of Philip Yancey;

"The worse a person felt about himself, the more likely she saw Jesus as a refuge.
***disclaimer: this topic is about our liturgical symbolism. If you don't care less or think I shouldn't care less and "should just pray", then don't bother commenting on this thread. I want to learn more about our liturgical tradition. Thanks guys :)

Does anyone know the colour scheme of the Coptic iconography? For example, we often see Christ in byzantine icons wearing a red garment (symbolizing His Divinity) covered with a blue/green shawl which symbolizes His Incarnation; while for the Virgin Mary the opposite colour scheme is in effect: blue underneath to symbolize her human nature and the red on top to symbolize how by Christ's incarnation in her womb, she was 'adorned/clothed' with divinity in the sense that Christ was born of/through her (while still remaining fully human of course).

In the Coptic icons, I often see that Christ wears a white garment underneath and then a red shawl-type garment on top, while the Virgin Mary is often clothed in red with a brown over-garment.What, if any, is the symbolism of this?

Of note is the classical/renaissance style coptic icons (which I love as well) of St. Mary with the crown on her head and in this icon she is wearing red underneath and blue on top.
Also, I've heard that the reason why Christ has one finger on his right hand blessing, is to explain the One Incarnate Nature and go in opposition to the supposedly byzantine Christ icons which might make his hands look like He is holding 2 fingers upwards to defend the 2 natures:human and divine; however the meaning of this sign is that He is signing out the name of Jesus Christ in letters (IC XC)...it has nothing to do with natures. So I was basically told that at some point there was a misunderstanding of this symbolism as Greek was used less in later centuries.

Anyone here visit this museum? I went yesterday, while visiting Coptic Cairo, and let me tell you the things I saw were unreal (i encourage everyone to go visit if you get the chance). Ancient tonyas (the stitching was cool), cymbals (its strange to know how far back they go), carved images of angels and the Holy Family, but what really captivated me the most were the colorful icons painted on stone which were apparently excavated from the cells of monks from ancient monasteries i never heard of in upper egypt. i just stood there thinking to myself this is what solitary monks prayed to everyday in isolation (the museum was virtually empty).

i really wish i could attend a liturgy in the coptic period just to see the differences (and im sure it would be enthralling), even though that desire usually diminishes whenever i attend mass early in the morning and stand while the ringing bells echos off the dome as Abouna picks the bread and the deacons chant Kyrie Eleyson. i just love our Coptic church...yeah, just something I wanted to share. yeah... "yeah" is such a convenient word to use when self consciousness arises during internet communication.

Pray for me?

Hi everyone.

I am doing a term paper on the COC. It's actually for a music 'appreciation' class. I also have to provide some music examples. I was wondering if you guys could help me find some sources as for the background of the COC and it's hymns, and how the hymns were passed down and stuff.

Also, if you guys have any ideas of hymns that would appeal to the American people, I'd appreciate that!

Thanks :)
