Please feel free to help me understand more about how Coptic Christians fast the Great Fast. I would like to go about it the right way. So far I have been fasting in unison to the best of my knowledge thru gathering bits of information here and there while driving all across the states. (trucking) I've been getting enlightened with great spiritual understanding from different Coptic Churches on the web they really dont emphasize on the basic outline for a person like me who never had the opportunity to set foot in a Coptic Church as of yet. And this is the first time the Great Lent is undeniably clear to me and I can't jus let it pass me by.
Whats clear to me is it's a vegan fast, I'm unclear on the strict abstinence part, im pretty sure it means not eating or drinking? an is it broken from day to day on weekdays with only one meal at Vespers? I also have a friend who's Eastern Orthodox (he helped me see the beauty of Orthodoxy) he's doing something else or maybe Im missing something? Thanks in advance - Jamie

If the introduction to the creed is a big part of our faith since we had a whole council on it, why don't we say it during liturgies and only during raising of incense? Does "The Creed" supersede the "Introduction" in terms of doctrine?

What is the point of praying in language you don't understand? Can this please God?

Praying more than 20 % in Coptic (if you don't understand it), is pointless. Yet, time and again I'll go to various churches and services with a lot of Coptic.

People wonder why the youth know little about the church...it's because many of her teachings can be found in the hymns, but they can't understand them!!

People wonder why Protestant music is popular among COCs...it's because the hymns have become just cool songs in Coptic with awesome hazzat!!

Why aren't we praying predominantly in English?!
I am considering starting to develop some online learning resources, perhaps with a view to creating a validated Certificate programme, then a Diploma programme, and even a Degree programme.

But I am not sure if there is any sort of market for serious and formal education in Orthodox Studies, which would require a commitment of time and effort.

A standalone module would consist of about 100 hours of study, and would provide 10 hours of audio lectures. A printed and/or ebook format study guide, a directed reading list, and provision for several short assignments to be written and marked (1,000 words), and one longer assignment (3-4,000 words).

It would be expected that such a module would take 3-4 months of part-time study effort, there would also be an online site with reading and study materials available for download, a forum for discussion with other students, and the opportunity to receive guidance from the tutor by email.

This poll is just a way of gauging if there is any interest at all.

I think the cost would be something like £120 or $200.

The first available module could be determined by interest. It might be Introduction to Orthodox Spirituality, or it might be Introduction to Orthodox Christology, or it might be Introduction to Orthodox Church History.

I'd rather lots of people voted 'Not interested' than that there were no results for me to make any sort of judgement.

God bless

Father Peter

If you have indicated on the other Poll that you are ready to start one of the modules in this proposed series of 12, then please indicate which you would prefer to start with.

I am preparing to begin the first module on 1st March, and will be taking registration details and fees as soon as we have agreed what the first module will be. I will be intending to produce the materials to support all students in a linear progress through the course material, but will also be hoping to be preparing material for a second module to be available before all students have completed this first one. Indeed once this module has begun it will be available to be started by other students as they choose, perhaps on a monthly start date to help keep track of cohorts of students.

Just a reminder. Each of the modules will have about 100 hours of study, including reading, audio materials, learning website, ebook study guide material, marking and commenting of assignments, private class forum and access to tutor by email, and will cost £120 or US $200 or CA $200.

Just to be clear, this is for one module. The certificate course will be 12 modules in length. The course material will be set at a comparable level to other UK CertHE courses, which is the first year of a UK university degree. It is estimated that each module will take 3-4 months to complete. This course will no be validated by a UK university until all of the modules have been prepared and made ready for use, but it is expected and intended that the course as a whole will provide a serious and worthwhile programme of study, whether one module or many are taken.

I am willing to be flexible in this first module in regard to assessment. I think that there should be one essay assignment, but other forms of assessment could take the form of multiple-choice and short answer questions.

If you are pretty much committed to taking this first course then do please indicate your preference on this poll, and if you are thinking of a particular topic I have not included then please PM me so I can include it.

Greetings and peace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be with you all,

I have searched for the topic of creation in which God created the world in 6 days. I cannot find much information about this. I have also searched for scholarly sources, but could not find any Coptic Orthodox interpretations of the 6 days of creation. I am not interested in interpretations by the Roman Catholic Church, protestant Churches, or any other denomination of Christianity. I am interested in hearing upon our Church's understanding of the 6 days of creation.

I believe that God created the world. I believe that God would take even less than 6 days to create the world because of his unlimited power. But I am interested in how God created the world. I want to try to understand; Were the 6 days of creation literally 6 days? Or was the story simplified for our limited knowledge' sake?

I think the overall message is that God created the world, and that the world He created was for us. How and When are questions that are so complex, God may have otherwise omitted it for us so as to not confuse us. We don't have understanding or knowledge or intelligence like our Supreme Creator.

But were the 6 days literal?

Please note: This question is just out of curiousity and in no way will it hinder my relationship with God. If anything; If will only bring me closer to God and to understanding Him better.

I was on a mainly Eastern Orthodox site called monachos.net, and stumbled upon a forum talking about how we Orientals are Monothelites and the Eastern are Dyothelites which is what prevents unity. According to the members this means we believe in one nature in Christ and they believe in two.

I have never heard of this term and don't understand whether this is true or a misunderstanding (just as we are sometimes mistakenly called monophysites, though we are miaphysites, and have the same belief on the nature of the Christ as the Eastern Orthodox).

Does anyone know the validity of these statements. Does the Easter Orthodox Church believe in two natures of Christ, and we believe in one?

Please pray for me,
Anba Bola

What do we do about factions in the church? More and more I am seeing a divide between people with different ideologies in the church.

People are being labeled "conservative", "liberal", "radical", "protestant", "alhan junkie", etc.

Parties are being formed - liberal and conservative. The clashes between the two concern issues of worship, evangelism, etc.

People are backing the leaders of each party - "I support X", "I am with Y"

It is getting out of hand.

How can we minimize this? Any thoughts?

I was wondering how was the commemoration of saints written. I mean why do we mention those specific saints and not others? and also is there any order or was it written in a way that would fit with the melody?
