This confrontation wasn't a debate or anything it was just a simple conversation because they seemed a little confused and they wanted to know what i think.

I told them that in the Coptic Orthodox Church we believe that it is necessary to be baptized because this is how we receive the Holy Spirit. They then asked me for a reference and I didn't really know exactly, but i did refer them to the Last Chapter of Matthew which is the Great Commission and it contains Jesus' command to the apostles to go and baptize in the name of the: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This wasn't enough for them because it never said that we receive the Holy Spirit.

I really like this question because i realized that i didn't really know much about it, but i just learned to accept it since i was born into the faith, so I would really appreciate your responses.

To sum up the questions of this post:

Is Baptism necessary for salvation?
If so, what are some references to back it up?

Pikhristos Aftonf,

Hope all is doing well. I know there was already a thread about Selecting A new Pope but this is specific to whether or not a Diocesan Bishop is allowed to be nominated to become Pope.
H.G. Bishop Youssef SUS Diocese
http://suscopts.org/press/2012/apr/28/can-a-diocesan-bishop-be-nominated-for-pope/
but a church father said this
“Neither sword, nor fire, nor exile, nor imprisonment disturbs me. I will not do what should not be done and I will not adopt what I have excommunicated in my own writings. I wrote that a bishop or metropolitan could not become a patriarch. How could I excommunicate myself by legalising today what I have forbidden yesterday, and by accepting what the holy fathers before me refused to accept.”
Abba Khail, Forty-sixth Patriarch of Alexandria AD 743-767.

What is really supposed to happen?

On Mixing protestantism and Orthodoxy

The church is the bride of Christ, and as a bride is to remain pure until her marriage, so too must we remain pure and spotless until Christ returns. Bringing in impurities is unacceptable and damaging to the body of the Church. How can we remain pure and faithful if we accept untrue doctrines, songs, and practices into our Church? "When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth?"(Lk. 18:8) Likewise, when Christ returns will He find his bride to be pure and untouched?

Introducing non-Orthodox ideas is itself a departure from Orthodoxy. Why do so many Church fathers have works entitled "against"? In fact, many of them have several works entitled "against" something. Instead of seeking to accept non-Orthodox by any means, our forefathers sought to define truth and demonstrate Orthodoxy. These great fathers of the Church actively engaged non-Orthodox and brought them to the truth that way. Today we have given into worldly ideas of equality and unity. This is a sin. It was satan who thought himself equal to God, it was satan who told Adam and Eve they could be equal to God. It was satan who deceived Korah into teaching that all were equal. It was satan who guided Luther to teach this very same error, that of equality in the church of God.

The church must remain pure like a virgin bride on her wedding day, waiting for her groom that she may receive Him.
