Does anyone have information on the origin of Communion rooms as an architectural feature of Coptic Churches?

In Butler's "The Ancient Coptic Churches of Egypt", he surveys many ancient Churches, and none of them have Communion rooms. They all have three sanctuaries, with three altars, but none of them have communion rooms beside those sanctuaries.

When I asked about this I was told that Communion rooms are a new architectural feature. I was told that traditionally, Communion was administered in the Nave, hence the ornate semi-domed stands for holding the patin found in many Churches.

Looking at the old Church in Mississauga, it has 5 doors at the front, 3 in front of altars, and 2 going into communion rooms at the side. The bigger Church attached to it only had 3 doors at the front, all with altars, and Communion is administered in the nave.

One theory put forward for their development was the incorrect practice that H.H. Pope Shenouda III wrote against, of laymen, not dressed, communing inside. In fact, I think Leeder, in his "Modern Sons of the Pharaohs", encountered a practise in the 1800's where men Communed in the Sanctuary while women were communed in the Nave. So the theory was that perhaps everyone communing behind the curtain, but in communion rooms of to the side was a less corrupt compromise to reduce this practise.

But imikhail posted recently that Communion rooms date back to the 4th century, or earlier. I would be interested in seeing evidence of this, and how it compares to the evidence from Butler against them being an ancient feature.

I am not trying to start a fight, it doesn't prove anything one way or the other. I am just curious what the ancient practise is, and how modern the current practise is because of clues that gives to other practices relating to the minor orders, and the general order of the Church.

Hey guys,

A few people (from completely different churches) have noted to me in the past that they don't "feel" that a certain abouna at their church is holy and therefore they cannot trust that abouna to confess to, and are less willing to listen to that abouna as they would be someone else who they feel is holy, and they feel wrong for not giving that abouna the respect that the Coptic church tells us to give abounas, and yet they feel grieved by the fact that abouna who is supposed to be shepherding them is perhaps not doing it well enough.

I know that people who are more spiritual are fought by the devil more than others, and that we should pray for them. But, I agree when these people say such things, though perhaps I feel that they shouldnt have said it, yet I feel its right to say things to open up discussion and truth, and I don't know how to reply to them.

I want to give a personal example: there is an abouna who I wanted to start confessing regularly to (as I wasnt in the habit of doing so ever before). I did so once, and when I wanted to confess again he took it lightly, so i ignored that. I asked him again another time, and for some reason I felt forgotten about. I went to him another time to say that I would like to start teaching the children in Sunday school. As he was talking to me, he got distracted with something and I was ignored again. I don't know what to do - ignore this, tell him, tell another abouna, tell sayidna?

So I want some advice on the things Ive mentioned from readers please.

Thank you (all comments are much appreciated)

Dear all,

Peace and grace of Jesus Christ,

Today I was visiting one of the monasteries in Egypt in which the Holy Family spent a while. There is a thought that keeps coming to my mind; why is it that we consider these monasteries HOLIER than any other place? Is it because Christ went to that place when He was on earth? But didn't He Himself create this whole earth. Didn't HE sanctify this whole earth by creating it?
Am I wrong in feeling that these places should not be thought of as holier than any other place? What is the difference between praying in this monastery compared to praying in my room? Isn't God present in my heart and everywhere around me?

Also is it wrong to be skeptical when it comes to miracles? Many people say this saint did that or this saint did this. Is it wrong to be skeptical and not believe what everyone says unless the person is credible?

Also, what is the significance of the holy oil which is given in Monasteries? And what is the significance of the Holy water that the priest sprays in the end of the liturgy?

Please help me distinguish whether these thoughts that I have are from the devil or not.

In Christ
Ebnyasoo3

Hey Tasbeha!
My new book has been about a year in the making and I think you are all going to enjoy this. Any of us who have discussed the faith with protestants has noticed that discussion scripture becomes a fruitless and menial task. Since both of us view scripture differently it becomes impossible to have a discussion. My new book seeks to bridge this gap. Essentially we go back to the church fathers to find the true church, thereby discovering her interpretation. We do this by starting with the disciples of the apostles and work our way up through many ante-nicean fathers. We look at their writings on many subjects, church authority, worship, practice, and all sorts of other topics that demonstrate the Coptic Orthodox church is the true reflection in the mirror that is the early church.

The book goes on sale July 30th and can be purchased at: http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/stjohnpublications

His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim, of the British Orthodox Church within the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate, will be celebrating the Holy Liturgy at the Orthodox Mission of St George and St Paul on Saturday 9th, June.

This is a mission directed towards those who are not yet Orthodox, and it needs YOUR support. If you are free on Saturday morning then please consider coming to pray with us, and inviting friends and colleagues. This is a pan-Orthodox mission and warmly welcomes members of all Orthodox communities in London, but especially those who are not Orthodox, not even Christian, or have found it hard to worship regularly elsewhere. But we also need the support of committed, Orthodox Christians who will worship with us as they are able and be a welcome to those who are seeking to become Orthodox.

Raising of Incense : 9:30 am
Divine Liturgy : 10:00 am

Refreshments and fellowship follow the Liturgy at 11:45 am.

It would really be encouraging if even one or two Copts supported us,
