Coptic Orthodox Church / The Omophor
« on: December 15, 2012, 05:57:08 PM »
Hey,
I came across this on wikipedia, and based on the description alone, i couldnt match it to anything our hierarchs wear?  Just wondering what it is?

Coptic Orthodox hierarchs (Patriarch, Metropolitans and Bishops) wear the omophor, usually folded, due to its large width. It is white in colour, with extensive ornamental embroidery. It is wider than its Byzantine counterpart, wrapped over the head over the monastic Kouklion, then crossed from the front over the chest, wrapped again from the back, crossed over the back by the waist level, then over the shoulders, then coming straight down, tucked under the frontal (over the chest) crossed wrapping. It is called a Ballin, and it is almost the double the length of the Byzantine Omophor.

Coptic Orthodox Church / Fasting the Apostle's Fast
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:01:55 PM »
Just wondering...

Since the Apostles Fast isn't considered a 'major/'Lordly' fast, does that mean [aside from Weds and Fri] that the weekday fasting should be without abstinence [like the weekend fast?]

Random Issues / Significance of Candles?
« on: February 14, 2011, 07:08:34 PM »
Can someone clear up the actual importance of candles in Orthodoxy?

I understand they are placed infront of icons of saints, to represent the light they shined on the world however, I know of some people who have a habit of lighting candles in front of icons as a sort of prayer?  For example: If a person were to have an interview from 9am to 10am, their family members would light a candle at that period of time, which [to me at least] indicates the specificity of it's actions.

For the record, I've always thought that candles wre simply symbols of light with no other functions?

Faith Issues / Was Christ a Nazirite?
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:15:13 PM »
Sorta like Samson, as a consecrated individual who doesn't cut His hair, drink alcohol, or touch corpses?

I remember someone bringing this up before, and the points of arguments included the Wedding at Cana and the Raising of Lazarus, although both event's didn't mention Christ actually going against one of the Naziritine laws?

Coptic Orthodox Church / Synaxarium?

Is the Synaxarium considered a Holy Book, which would make it perfect, or is subject to historical errors?

Coptic Orthodox Church / Suggestions?
« on: January 02, 2011, 07:29:50 PM »
Would someone be kind enough to suggest names of [preferably pre-split] Biblical interpreters, who would be good references for a simpler Bible study?

So far, I've seem to run into the writings of St John of the Golden Mouth alot.  Any more?

Coptic Orthodox Church / Constantine the Great
« on: November 28, 2010, 06:31:06 AM »
I was reading about him in a book, and although it highlighted his many achievements and his promotion of Christianity, it also mentioned his less than worthy deeds [some of which, I guess were necessary due to his position as Emperor.]  Aside from that, his involvement with Christianity [Post Nicea] seemed to be sympathetic towards Arius' cause, probably due to his close friendship with Eusebius of Nicodemia [who was at one point a strong Arian.]  He was even responsible for the first exile of Pope Athansius.

So why does the Church consider him a saint?

Coptic Orthodox Church / Diffrentiating between the St. James'
« on: November 06, 2010, 02:16:27 PM »
I seem to have confused myself and the internet isn't exactly helping me out.

The name James is mentioned three times as following:

1. James [the Greater] - Son of Zebadee
2. James [the Lesser] - Son of Alpheus
3. James the Just

From what I've gathered, James the Greater preached in both Spain and Jerusalem, James the Lesser's name was only mentioned twice and was supposedly martyered preaching by the Gaza/Egypt border, and lastly James the Just was the head of church in Jerusalem, and presided over the Council of Jerusalem.

According to wikipedia, St. Jerome said James the Lesser is infact James the Just, and this view is accepted by the RCC.  However, apparently the Eastern Orthodox Church and some protestant churches refute this.

What's our stand on this, and who was James the Just?

Faith Issues / Salvation for others...
« on: November 01, 2010, 07:37:39 AM »
Couldn't really find it in the archives, but I'm sure it must have been touched on before...

As most people know thanks to the internet, HH has been under attack lately because of many issues.  One of those issues was HE Abba Bishoy's televised statement that there is no salvation outside of Orthodoxy.  I was reading this article about a Catholic priest named Fr. Leonard Feeney who excommunicated back in the 50's over the same idea that there is no salvation outside of Catholicism.

To be honest, I still don't know what is our Church's view on this subject [I've heard numerous, sometimes contridicting views.]  What I would like to know however is, does the Church support HE Abba Bishoy's statement, or has it distanced itself from it?

I was talking to a Protestant fellow, who was going of the deep end about such a remark.

Although I can't help but understand where this Bishop is coming from, I really loved the one line that read:

For Jesus there were no justified illnesses," said parliamentarian Mia De Schamphelaere.

Your two cents?

Personal Issues / Practicality of Helping others
« on: September 28, 2010, 11:35:09 PM »
I was recently involved in a heated debate with someone regarding this subject matter:

I believe to help someone means to go out of your way to aid them.  He believes that a person should help another person only if the helper is not at risk to any sort of damage.  For example someone with only a 100 dollars left shouldn't exactly lend 50 of it to another person.

Although I'm pretty sure my concept of it is the more 'Christian' of the two in the spiritual sense, I fully understand its impractical. So I ask should one let practicality and realism rule their actions -keep in mind, I'm not referring to matters such as denying your faith in order to live, Im referring to everyday trivial things?

I personally didn't know that Pope Athanasius body was uncorrupted.  I also can't guarantee it is, but I found this link cool nonetheless.

Faith Issues / Matt 1:24-25
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:07:55 PM »
" When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus."

Can someone explain how the words "no union UNTIL she gave birth" fit into the Orthodox idea that Mother Mary remained a virgin till her death?

Faith Issues / Black Magic?
« on: September 09, 2010, 08:29:48 PM »
Does anyone have the opinion of the Church on it?

I personally don't believe in it, but I've recently heard of stories that happened to people I know by association.  Opinions?

Faith Issues / Chronological List of the Bible's books

Does someone know/have a chronological list of the books of the Bible?  I'm pretty sure they're not arranged in that manner?
