Hymns Discussion / Re: kata ni khoros...short and long?
« on: Today at 02:39:00 AM »They are all the same pattern.
Evsop from Kata Nikhoros and Afrek Etfe,
Efnouti Nai Nan that the priest says,
Agion Teero of Apekran
Amoini Anav of Nikhora
Ghar of The Great Gregorian Enthok Ghar
etc.
all follow the same pattern of hazzat (notes). They may be said either the long way or the short way. As far as cantors are concerned, let's not forget that the original source is Mlm Mikhail the Great. If you search through his recordings, you'll find that he said all of them in the long tune. I think this is because Mlm Mikhail had a thing for being very thorough and complete so he always said the long way. But the short way is permissible as well.
If you can please share the recording of Mlm Mikhail of Kata Nikhoros. Thx
Ditto. I can't find any recording from Mlm Mikhail - so if you have it, please share.

Coptic Orthodox Church / Re: I feel like an Orthodox in my church among Protestants
« on: Yesterday at 06:48:00 PM »Dear Brothers,
Check this out:
http://www.arabwestreport.info/year-2012/week-12/43-ecumenical-relations-coptic-orthodox-church-mentioned-decisions-holy-synod
In June 2005 under the subject of "Facing protestant teaching"
The Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church has declared:
"No Protestant chorals (singing) and no unorthodox prayers are allowed in Orthodox churches"
This needs to be more widely publicized and the bishops and priests need to enforce it.
Wow, I would love a copy of the book from which this summary was made in English. Can someone translate it?!

Hymns Discussion / kata ni khoros...short and long?
« on: May 18, 2013, 04:27:06 AM »
Christ is risen!
I was listening to "kata ni khoros" on this site from both CIA and Cantor Farag...I couldn't help but notice that Cantor Farag seems to cut the hymn short (at least when comparing it to CIA). I am referring to the hazzat in the word "evsop"...
Anyone know what the deal with that is?
CIA (3 min mark)
Cantor Farag (2 min 50 sec mark)

Coptic Orthodox Church / Re: Confession During Holy Week
« on: May 02, 2013, 02:02:34 PM »OK.. regardless - what is the official view of the COC? is it ok to confess during the Holy week? i haven't confessed in ages, and I feel so bad to have communion on the Eid without having confessed in such a long time.
What am I meant to do?
Most people who confess during Holy Week do it some time during the Apocalypse Night.

Faith Issues / Re: Science vs. faith
« on: April 04, 2013, 04:02:42 PM »There is so much wrong information in this flow chart that I can write a 5 page rebuttal. I'll just point out one thing.
This flowchart assumes that scientific method can apply matters of faith. By definition an experiment can only examine finite material that is reproducible. Science cannot design an experiment that examines infinity. Albert Einstein said that science cannot prove the existence of God, only disprove any theory about God.
This means that scientific method cannot apply to religion. The author of this flowchart erroneously implies and concludes faith is inferior to science because of inadequate experimentation. It has nothing to do with inadequate or infrequent experiments in faith, just inadequate scientific methodology.
I can go on if anybody wants.
Please do continue, if you can

Coptic Orthodox Church / Re: What's wrong with us??
« on: March 19, 2013, 09:46:56 AM »
Zoxsasi,
It seems that unity between the OO & EO wouldn't solve your problem anyway -- since the "opera" style worship is too great a turn-off for you.
Unfortunately, I see only two options for you:
1) Petition for a Coptic Orthodox parish in your area.
2) Move to an area with a Coptic Orthodox parish.
If you are "dying", as you say, from this, then you have to doing something to live.

Good stuff, Peter. Very unique "hazzats" that are surprisingly pretty easy to follow

Youth Corner / Re: Advice: AP Language and Composition or Research Honors?
« on: February 11, 2013, 01:12:42 AM »I vote for the AP class as well. At this stage in the game (assuming you have already applied to college, sent your midyear report, etc), second semester grades A or B won't make much of a difference. However, if you get the AP credit is may save you a course in college which would be much more valuable.
Ditto.
Second semester grades definitely don't factor in, unless there is a serious drop in grades.

Take the AP class - college credit is too valuable to pass up. The hours you spend on this class now will save you a lot more time in the future, since you can skip an English class (at least that's how it was for me).
As far as educational benefit, I can't speak as to which is greater. What does the honors research course curriculum look like?

InChrist7,
Please keep in mind that it was your declaration that this show was an "authentic Orthodox witness to Christ" (something even Marina doesn't claim) that sparked the long discussion that ensued.
Marina,
Thanks for the response. And I agree with Remnkemi, you should have at least 10 episodes of material with this thread!
