  • Is it good?
  • seems pretty boring...
  • Having read Chesil Beach I think there are some important questions that a young Christian needs to answer.

Many books today have explicit sexual content but if the story demands it and is not pornographic (i.e. stimulating sexual desires artificially) that has to be accepted.

Chesil Beach is not pornographic but it deals with a failed sexual relationship that might be difficult to cope with if you have had no experience of the possibility of such matters. In Victorian times or even more recently such matters were dealt with more subtly.

I think you ought to read it but remember that not all authors deal with 'sex' in a titivating way and that they are telling stories, usually about human beings who are not Christian and often are suffering badly-unredeemed humanity.

Not all books are like this; I often read novels that seem to be yes, pornograhic! However, the only way to avoid this is to avoid ever reading literature, a great deprivation.

Don't forget to pray about it.

  • I'm glad that helped. I find my style is cramped trying to say what you want to in a forum like this. I don't want to go on too long!

I love literature and always have a book on the go. My family (who are not practising Christians) are too. We share books to a certain extent.

Keep reading throughout your life. If the Devil suggests an alternative path, deviating from the right one, be aware of that. Otherwise rejoice that God has given some story tellers such a gift.

    Please pray for me.
