The place of the Virgin Mary in salvation?

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
Dear All,

What is the Orthodox church's view on the place of the Holy Virgin Mary in salvation? can the intercession of the saints save an otherwise hell-bound person?

  • The Coptic Orthodox Church sees St Mary as an incredible intercessor between us and God, as she is the Mother of God and as demonstrated in the Gospels it is known that Jesus loved her very much. Thus, we are always pleading to her to intercede on our behalf that God may forgive us and mercy upon us. Now of course the intercessions of Saints can do miracles but I'm not sure that just because you intercede through her she can save you from hell. You yourself have to live a live pleaseing to God and the intercessions of this Saint will work this effort. So basically, you can't live an unpleaseing, sinful life but pray that St Mary intercedes for you and you'll be saved because of it..
Iffy topic but I think thats right, someone correct me if I'm wrong..
  • Intercede for me,
    do not leave your servant,
ask your son to save me,
    from the fire,
    For your intercession,
    is heard and accepted,
and He defends from the attacks,
    of the adversary.

That was an excerpt from O Mary, which is prayed during the Kiahk midnight praise.

Salvation only comes from Christ, so an intercession can't save an otherwise hell-bound person. Our relationship with St Mary and indeed with all the saints is one of love and prayers. In our prayers to them we only ask for intercessions because they are close(r) to God. But we (hopefully) understand that salvation, power and authority over evil only come from Christ.
