Only Church Wedding

A friend of mine was getting married to an Egyptian man living in the US. She applied for a fiance visa (entails you must get married in the US) but she had a church ceremony as for a wedding so her family can attend. (She never documented it at the Egyptian government)

Is that even possible? Can you only get married in front of God?

  • As far as I know, the church usually handles all the legal paperwork, but I could be wrong.
  • The priests are under strict ordinance from the hierarchy, in the United States, not to carry out any matrimonial rite without a wedding license issued by the given authorities and jurisdiction.  The priest faces the penalty of being defrocked.

    No exceptions.
  • Apparently not in Egypt
